February 14, 20178 yr Speedway spinoff could create new Fortune 500 company Speedway's president says its parent company — Marathon Petroleum Corp. — will decide around the middle of this year whether to spin off the Enon-based store chain, a move which could create a new Fortune 500 company in Springfield. In January, Marathon Petroleum (NYSE: MPC) announced it would launch a special committee to conduct a thorough review of Speedway. Gary Heminger, chairman, president and CEO of Marathon, said in a call to shareholders an independent financial advisor would also help to lead the board. It will determine if it would be more financially sound that the company continue as an entity of its own. February 14, 20178 yr Good! About time the Miami Valley gets a Fortune company back in the area! “To an Ohio resident - wherever he lives - some other part of his state seems unreal.”
February 14, 20178 yr I can't understand why Speedway is so popular? Most of them I've stopped at are dirty, with half the pumps out of order and you have to wait forever for pre-pay customers to come out after waiting in line for smokes, lottery and horribly unhealthy food. It's like a suburban version of a ghetto-mart.
February 14, 20178 yr ^the main reasons I use Speedway are 1. the Speedy Freezes (when the machine is actually working) and 2. if you buy Speedway gift cards at Marc's you get 10¢ off per gallon when you pay with the gift card. “To an Ohio resident - wherever he lives - some other part of his state seems unreal.”

July 5, 20177 yr Decision expected soon on Speedway spinoff The decision to transform the Dayton region’s largest company into a publicly traded entity will happen soon. That’s the word from Marathon Petroleum Co., the owner of Clark County-based Speedway LLC. Speedway, the gasoline and convenience store chain, posted $18.3 billion in revenue last year. If the company is spun off on its own from Findlay-based Marathon Petroleum, it could see an infusion of money that could lead to more expansion. May 14, 20187 yr Great piece from the Cleveland Fed: UNEMPLOYMENT, VACANT PROPERTIES, POPULATION DECLINE: FINDING SOLUTIONS IN DAYTON The cash register’s roots are here. The automatic car starter’s. Aviation’s, too. Inventors once built factories that put people to work, but today, many of the well-paying blue-collar jobs that attracted people to work and live in Dayton, Ohio, are gone. Companies that locals figured would be here forever, among them National Cash Register, have left, and parts of the city suffer from disinvestment. In particular, West Dayton, which locals say experienced pronounced segregation and redlining, has higher rates of crime and poverty, along with a very large food desert. All of the departures and loss, though, have reinvigorated action in some parts. Just last year, for the first time in nearly 15 years, residents’ councils formed at two public housing complexes and are meeting monthly to plan events and voice resident concerns. Block parties have brought together residents and police. There are bright spots commercially speaking, too: Since 2015, more than 100 new businesses have located downtown, according to the Downtown Dayton Partnership, and signed and renewed leases in 2017 helped chip away at downtown’s vacancy rate. The residential occupancy rate in Dayton’s core is more than 97 percent, even with roughly 760 housing units completed since 2010. So while the challenges are mighty, locals say they aren’t insurmountable. The headwinds also aren’t unique to Dayton: Many other places have endured industrial losses, and with them, population loss and the painfully evident slide of neighborhoods, amenities, and schools. “Our city needs a sense of urgency around West Dayton’s disinvestment,” Lela Klein, executive director of the Greater Dayton Union Co-op Initiative, tells Cleveland Fed visitors during a trip in February. “Our city as a whole rises and falls together. You can’t have a strong and resilient city when a significant portion of your population lacks access to opportunity.” It is Dayton’s response to these challenges that Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland president Loretta J. Mester and others came to see—particularly, what’s working and what people are attempting to do to turn things around. October 26, 20195 yr "Couldn't find the right talent" in Dayton, and then "couldn't find the right talent" in Duluth. That tower would have looked great on our skyline. October 30, 20195 yr Reports: Speedway may become its own company Speedway LLC, the largest company in the Dayton region, may soon have the opportunity to grow much larger. That’s because parent company Marathon Petroleum Corp. looks to spin off its retail line, which mostly consists of Speedway, according to Bloomberg. Clark County-based Speedway posted $23.6 billion in revenue last year, and a stand-alone Speedway would be the largest U.S.-listed convenience store operator. A Marathon spokesperson said the company doesn't provide comment on rumors or speculation. Apparently this has been in the works for much of 2020. According to the below linked article from the Dayton Business Journal, yesterday's news of this sale comes nearly five months after 7-Eleven pulled a $22 billion bid for Speedway, with the coronavirus outbreak impacting negotiations at that time. However, by June, Marathon had once again resumed talks to sell Speedway: 7-Eleven parent to acquire Speedway for $21B By Jacob Fisher – Staff Reporter, Dayton Business Journal Updated: August 3, 2020, 6:57am EDT Marathon Petroleum Corp. has agreed to sell Speedway to the parent company of 7-Eleven for $21 billion. Seven & i Holdings Co., the Tokyo-based parent of 7-Eleven Inc., will add more than 3,900 Speedway stores in 35 states to its U.S. footprint as part of the all-cash transaction, the company said in a statement Sunday. Marathon said the agreement should generate about $16.5 million in after-tax cash proceeds that will be used to reduce the company's debt and return capital to shareholders. The arrangement also includes a 15-year fuel supply agreement for approximately 7.7 billion gallons per year associated with the Speedway business. The deal, approved unanimously by the boards of directors of both companies, is expected to close in the first quarter of 2021. ( . . . ) Marathon has been planning to spin off Speedway since late 2019 after facing months of pressure from investors, including Elliott Management Corp., who said Marathon could unlock between $22 billion and $40 billion in value by breaking itself up into three separate businesses: refining, midstream and retail. In March, the Findlay-based refiner opted to retain ownership of its midstream unit, MPLX LP, following the conclusion of a strategic review. Speedway employs more than 40,000 people companywide, including nearly 1,200 workers at locations in Enon, Springfield and Vandalia. It is the largest company in the region by total revenue, according to DBJ research. MORE: https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2020/08/03/7-eleven-parent-to-acquire-speedway-for-21b.html

May 17, 20232 yr Major aerospace company announces $20M investment into Dayton facility An aerospace company with a growing presence in the region announced plans to invest up to $20 million in new test cell and equipment at its Dayton facility. The investment will inevitably lead to more work in Dayton’s aerospace sector and could spark more job opportunities. GE Aerospace — part of General Electric Co. — is planning to put this full investment into the Electrical Power Integrated Systems Center (EPISCenter) in Dayton. The investment comes as a means of meeting increased demand for hybrid electric aircraft engine component testing in coming years. NASA recently selected GE Aerospace to develop an integrated, megawatt-class hybrid electric propulsion system as part of the Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration (EPFD) program. Plans call for ground and flight tests of the hybrid electric system this decade, in collaboration with Boeing, using a modified Saab 340B aircraft and GE’s CT7 engines. NASA also previously awarded GE Aerospace a contract for the Turbofan Engine Power Extraction Demonstration under the Hybrid Thermally Efficient Core (HyTEC) project. June 16, 20231 yr It’s official: DMAX to build $920M expansion in Brookville General Motors Co. is boosting its presence in the Miami Valley with a massive expansion. The $920 million project will relocate its manufacturing operations from Moraine to Brookville’s thriving industrial park. The project, which includes a 1.1 million-square-foot addition to be built on 54 acres adjacent to DMAX’s current campus at 101 Campus Blvd., will relocate 714 employees from DMAX’s Moraine engine plant facility. Construction of the expansion is expected to begin immediately. The announcement was delivered by GM North America Manufacturing and Brookville leaders at DMAX’s Brookville facility today. June 16, 20231 yr DMAX moving 20 minutes away to Brookville is good news disguised as bad news. Keeping the facility in the Dayton area, having GM re-invest in it, and not having this be built on Knoop Prairie are all huge wins for the Dayton area as a whole.1.1 million square feet is significantly larger than their current facility. Since they built a casting foundry there already, I’m guessing they are going for building the extra floor space in case the Duramax trucks ever have to go EV. But this is a big bet on the Duramax trucks staying petro fueled for a while… a billion dollar bet. It will be interesting to see if GM decides to hold the current DMAX building or sell it off. My guess is they sell it off quickly, probably/hopefully to ICP since they redeveloped the OTHER massive formerly vacant GM plant in Moraine, and they find a tenant. Moraine is in a lot better shape now than it was 15 years ago as a GM town. WinSupply, Fuyao, and others are growing like crazy there. If I was Brookville’s city leaders, I’d be careful because GM has a habit of not treating its communities well. They really need to leverage whatever additional tax revenue they can get from this to invest in community amenities that are lacking in town like shopping, restaurants, a desirable downtown, bike infrastructure, and parks to keep GM committedSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
September 18, 20231 yr California company to invest $500M, create 2,000 jobs in Dayton A cutting-edge California aviation company will make an enormous investment in the Miami Valley. The historic project will create 2,000 jobs. Santa Cruz-California-based Joby Aviation Inc. (NYSE: JOBY) will build an electric air taxi manufacturing facility at the Dayton International Airport. Joby Ohio’s new assembly-line manufacturing facility will build, test, and fly all-electric, vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) air taxis used for commercial passenger operations. The aircraft, designed to accommodate a pilot and four passengers, will be capable of achieving speeds of up to 200 miles per hour over a 100-mile range. The firm plans to operate the aircraft as part of aerial ridesharing networks in cities and communities around the world. "Ohio’s legacy in aviation leadership begins with the Wright Brothers and continues now with Joby Aviation, as they launch a new era in advanced aviation manufacturing and aerial mobility in Dayton,” said Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine. “The aircraft that will roll off Joby Ohio’s production lines will redefine urban transportation and contribute to a transformational change in the way people and goods travel.” More below: https://www.bizjournals.com/dayton/news/2023/09/18/joby-to-invest-500m-create-2-000-jobs-dayton.html & https://www.jobyaviation.com/news/joby-selects-dayton-ohio-first-scaled-manufacturing-facility/ "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
September 18, 20231 yr How the Dayton region landed the $500M Joby investment Economic development deals take months, if not years, to come to fruition. They can't be boiled down to just one person or one motive. They are a culmination, not a single moment.
