October release for star-studded movie partially made in Dayton

 

You can catch a glimpse of Dayton on the big screen this fall when a star-powered movie filmed in parts of the city debuts in theaters.

 

Director David Lowery's "The Old Man and the Gun” hits theaters Oct. 5 from Fox Searchlight Pictures.

 

The film stars Robert Redford as Forrest Tucker, a man who escaped prison at age 70 to conduct a string of heists; Sissy Spacek as the man's love interest; and Casey Affleck as the detective working to track down Tucker. The film also stars Danny Glover.

 

Filmmakers spent two days last May filming in part of downtown Dayton, including the Talbott Tower, Liberty Tower and along Second Street.

Tickets are on sale now for October screenings of a star-powered movie filmed in parts of the Gem City.

 

Director David Lowery's "The Old Man and the Gun” hits theaters in October from Fox Searchlight Pictures.

 

The film will beginning screening in Dayton at The Neon during a preview screening at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11, with benefit to FilmDayton. Tickers are on sale now online at $16.

Centerville-native, Wright State grad picks up Oscar nomination for 'Black Panther'

 

One Wright State University graduate may soon take home an Oscar trophy.

 

Hannah Beachler, a graduate of WSU's film and production design program, has been nominated for an Academy Award in the production design category for her work on Marvel's hit movie "Black Panther." She shares this nomination with Set Director Jay Hart.

 

Along with this Oscar nomination, the Centerville native also broke a few records. She is the first African American to be an Oscar-nominee in this category and is also the first woman in Marvel's history to serve as a production designer on one of their films.

'American Factory' filmmakers, Fuyao executives celebrate Oscar win

 

 

For the first time since winning the Oscar for best documentary, local filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steve Bognar returned to Fuyao Glass America to celebrate with company leaders. And while top Fuyao executives took issue with some of what they perceived as negative aspects in the film, the pair were welcomed with open arms.

 

Like they've done countless times before, Reichert and Bognar — who live in Yellow Springs — walked through the doors of Fuyao prior to a celebration Wednesday at the nearby Taste of the World restaurant. Only this time, they had their Oscars in tow.

 

The Oscars were for their documentary, "American Factory," which examined the trials and tribulations associated with standing up a massive auto glass factory in the former General Motors plant in Moraine. Shortly after arriving, Reichert and Bognar met with Fuyao Glass Industry Group Chairman Cho Tak Wong and Fuyao Group North America President and CEO Jeff Liu.

 

The filmmakers received a warm welcome from both men, who provided them with gifts as a gesture of good will. The embrace was a culmination of years of filming, for which their efforts paid off.

 

"We miss coming to this factory," Bognar said. "We were here day after day after day, and we really got to know a lot of the people. As tough and challenging as it can be, it's also where things are really happening. It feels alive and vital."

Dayton films and TV series awarded nearly $9 million in tax credits

 

Several Dayton productions recently received funding of nearly $9 million in support for the filming of TV series and feature films in the region.

 

The Ohio Department of Development recently awarded more than $44 million in tax credits for the production of feature length films, documentaries, pre-Broadway productions, miniseries, video games and music videos across Ohio. Awards are being made through the Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit Program, which provides a refundable tax credit of 30 percent on production cast and crew wages and other in-state spending for eligible productions.

 

“Investing in these productions fuels the vibrant creativity that’s alive in Ohio’s communities and serves as a powerful catalyst for economic growth,” said Lydia Mihalik, director of the Ohio Department of Development. “These projects celebrate and showcase our diverse landscapes, generate jobs, stimulate local businesses, and create a lasting legacy for the arts in Ohio.”

$70M film production project eyes Trotwood location

 

An undisclosed company is looking to transform a vacant location in Trotwood to support film and other productions projects.

 

Dubbed “Project Sunrise”, this $70 million project will transform an underutilized location, including two new special purpose buildings, space for filming and editing and support industries that are tied to new productions.

 

The vacant land will be converted into a vertically integrated content factory to include two large, purpose-built soundproof buildings, two production offices, one HQ office building, a mill building and a storage building.
