I decided to come up for a visit tomorrow and looking for a cheap hotel- motel near rapid. I found one near Brookpark Station and was wondering how long the rapid stays open downtown Friday night to get back to Brookpark, if there is parking at the station and if it's easy to get a cab late at night at that station. Also are there weekend daily passes for the Rapid and other public transit for Saturdays? Cant afford a hotel downtown this time around and prefer just to use public transit anyway. Girlfriend loved riding the train when we went to a Browns game last time up. Why I ask about Saturday passes is because I would like to do a rapid transit tour on Saturday.

You should check out the Cleveland Hostel.  It will probably be cheaper than a hotel on brook park and frankly nicer.  It’s also in arguably the most fun neighborhood in cleveland.  Right off the red line. Also probably a 5-6 dollar Uber Ride if you need to get home from downtown very late.  Frankly, the better food and drink is down the street from the Hostel.

Are there still strip clubs on Brookpark between Engle and W 150th?

 

Even if not, I would go elsewhere for a cheap hotel

Definitely stay at the Cleveland hostel.

For a chain hotel, the best bet near the rapid is at the Puritas W150th station - LaQuinta Airport North is usually under a 100 a night and steps from the rapid.

 

I don't think any hotel on Brookpark is really that walkable to the rapid station...

 

Cleveland Hostel is probably cheaper and much closer to nightlife and the West Side Market area though.

Hostels are for anyone operating on a budget, really.  Hostels dont exclude. 

 

There are usually watch parties outside of the Q during playoff games.

Sadly, that's a very pedestrian-unfriendly area and is getting a little ill-maintained. It was built-up in the 1960s and just crossing West 150th Street on foot is a challenge. When you see the area, you'll realize why people take a hotel shuttle from the Sheraton and the nearby Marriott to the Rapid station just across the street.

 

BTW, the weather in Cleveland right now is the 50s within a couple miles of the lake and near 80 five miles inland. Tomorrow, the forecast is for rain with temps in the 70s, but likely cooler near the lake again.

Most of the Red Line was built in the 1950s and 60s when pre-Depression era transit-supportive land use was forgotten, or even discarded as undesirable. The area where your hotel is not unsafe from a crime perspective, but you will feel like a fish out of water walking to the station with all the fast-moving traffic on West 150th. Fortunately you don't have to walk far.

Exactly! And it will be that way at 10-11 p.m. tonight when the reverse lake breeze exhales out to the lake, dragging the air across all of the sun-heated buildings and pavement. It's the warmest time of the day here along the lakefront each spring.

Just got out of the car in Medina felt about the same as when we left home but when we got out of the car at the hotel 20-minute drive later felt a chill in the air.

errr, I've known where you lived for years now, KJP... :-X

When I was a kid I lived in Lakewood and N Royalton and went to Kent State. I live in Hocking Hills area right now on a 5 acre wooded lot. Trying to get my girlfriend to want to move to Cleveland area someday. Weird thing my GF lived in Royalton- Not N Royalton- on Royalton Rd.

Point is -- it was 59 degrees BECAUSE of where I live. And the temperature is rising, now at 66 degrees at 10 p.m. because of the reverse lake breeze coming across the warmed buildings and pavement in Cleveland and the suburbs to my south.

 

UPDATE - it hit 70 at 10:30 pm (warmest weather today!) but dropped back to 68 as a light rain started falling. If it hadn't started raining, it would probably continue to warm. I can hear the wind push against the windows on the south side of my building.

What is this place like? anyone been there before. Last and only hostel I've been to you had to be a foreign backpacker or college student. Not for middle age man, GF, brother and adult children. Going to Cedar Point next Saturday but thought of making stop in Cleveland day before we go if price is right. 7 people going but I'm covering most of bill. When I think of an hostile, I think of a bunch of hippies smoking weed in common  living room watching TV while someone cooks in kitchen and rows of bunks in same room. It was 1994, Canal St., New Orleans.

Actually website is detailed enough to get info but would like hear what people think of this place that have been there anyway.

Think better deal when just my GF and I visit and would be more fun.

^its fine and right in the middle of a great area.  If you dont like the shared room concept, you can get a private room for you and your group.  Its not 5 start hotel amenities.  Its an upscale dorm...but there is good food, coffee, etc. available.  Its perfectly fine and acceptable, especially if you are into trying different things

i’ve seen it, looks great on the outside, but havent been in or used it. i have however, helped open and run a hostel and also done a lot of hosteling in the past. most have family rooms and even private bathrooms — if you dont want the traditional shared bunk dorms. some even have family rooms. and around the usa, some are in very cool locations, like lighthouses, ships, a-frames, etc., so worth considering when traveling.

 

so yeah imo this could be be great option for a couple for a few days.

 

note its kind of a tradition to spend some time interacting with your fellow hostelers and to volunteer to do a chore, but you dont have to.

 Sorry, i missed this.  If you are parking in Shaker, i would park at Green or Warrensville on the Green line, or anywhere along the blue line as van aken has plenty of parking, including the van Aken District at warrensville.  

 

i dont typically tell people to park at the stops west of Shaker Square, but many weekday people do without issue
