In my inbox I get emails from the campaign of Kathleen Clyde for Secretary of State. I don't know much about her, but she looks pleasant enough. I get a lot of emails though---kindof annoying.  Then yesterday, I get one from her dad:

"I’m Kathleen Clyde’s dad, Bob, and I’m so glad that you are supporting my daughter’s campaign..."

Then today, I get one from her mom:

Subject line was "My Daughter, Kathleen"--I loved reading Kathleen’s dad’s email, and wanted to make sure you had a chance to read it too..... Lauren, Campaign Manager"

So Daddy writes an email about his little girl and her mommy is her campaign manager.  Is she running for President of Elementary School Student Council?  I thought the dad email was a little weird but let it slide---only to see that her mommy today is her campaign manager?  WTF? Her mom may be a brilliant campaign manager (actually we can now say she's not), but this candidate doesn't have to tell the world her mom is her campaign manager.

This is the best Democratic candidate?  Its really embarrassing and very unfortunate for Ohio. She ran unopposed this month in the Primary. On the email, if you click on her big logo, it doesn't go to her campaign page to learn what she's about, it instead goes to actblue.com a site where you can give her money and on which there are no links to her site to see what she's about. I don't think she's being half-ass I think she's utterly clueless--and her mommy too.

Anyone else find this horrendously bizarre? What gives?

I generally find almost all campaign email lists to be incredibly incompetent, incessant, and off-putting, even for candidates that I really like. But with that said, the ODP is definitely in dire straits and has been for a long time. Ed FitzGerald should have been the wake up call and low point to come back from, but honestly statewide the Dems aren't doing any better today. I don't know what the solution is, but yes it's a disaster and a total embarrassment

Generally as a rule, I don't like to sign up for any political email lists because the emails are almost always annoying and incessant. This, however, is particularly bizarre. Kathleen Clyde is actually quite qualified for the job, and it seems like something she's had her eyes on for a few years, so I don't know how she allowed her campaign to look this bad. Hopefully they can get it together before the election.

I agree with the above that ODP has been having a rough time, but I actually think there have been signs of improvement lately. This year's slate of candidates is worlds better than what we were offered in 2014. For governor, the Cordray/Sutton ticket is very solid, which is a big breath of fresh air after the FitzGerald disaster. For AG, Dettelbach is a strong campaigner and fundraiser who I think genuinely has a chance at winning. For SoS, Kathleen Clyde is good on paper (and definitely better than Nina Turner) so I hope she gets her s**t together. I'm also really impressed with Zach Space and I think he has a solid chance at beating Keith Faber for Auditor. Honestly, I think every Democratic candidate across the board is stronger than what we were offered 4 years ago (except maybe Rob Richardson, because Connie Pillich was the standout Democrat in 2014).

You misread the email. Lauren Dunham isn’t Kathleen’s mother. Lauren is one half of a political power couple that met while working on Sherrod Brown’s campaigns. This year’s ticket is very strong and having someone like Lauren Dunham as your manager means this is a serious campaign. If you do more research about Clyde, I think you’ll consider her a terrific candidate.

And just to clarify, the email you got was a fundraising email. It’s assumed you are a supporter, so they arent going to give you much info on the candidate. Sherrod Brown’s emails go to Actblue. So do most Democratic candidates once you are on their email lists. I’m not sure how you got on Clyde’s fundraising list but sending you to ActBlue is pretty standard for any Dem candidate.

What you say about Lauren may be true, but I did not misread it. Here's the email exactly as I got it:

From:  Lauren Durham

Subject: My daughter, Kathleen

"Dear Paul --

I loved reading Kathleen’s dad’s email, and wanted to make sure you had a chance to read it too -- see below.

Kathleen’s birthday weekend is almost over, and it’s your last chance to give!

Thank you for being on this team, and thanks for helping make Kathleen’s birthday a special one.

Best,

Lauren

Campaign Manager"

How else could you interpret this message?  In short:  From Lauren about "my daughter" signed, Lauren, Campaign Manager. ...so half of a "political power couple" or not, this is very sloppy work. Most people that would just see that may dismiss Kathleen outright without taking the time to explore this matter as I did here. And I only did so because I was so baffled.... Sloppy campaign work ultimately reflects badly on the candidate.

I would never look at this and assume that Lauren is her mother. The subject is "My daughter, Kathleen" which is what her father's email was about and this email is about that email. As straightforward as it gets.

Agreed - Lauren says right in the first sentence, she is referencing the dad's email.

If her subject was "The Email, 'My Daughter, Kathleen'"  or "Bob Klyde's Email:  My Daughter Kathleen"  I'd agree with you. But it wasn't. If someone sends an email under their own name, then what is in the subject line can be assumed to be related to the sender.  If I sent you an email--and in the subject line, I wrote, "My Schedule Next Week",  you would assume I was referring to a movie or something else about a schedule and not MY schedule next week?  The only way your comment makes sense is if you know the sender and know the subject line doesn't relate to her---but as a general rule you cannot assume everyone knows everyone, so proper English or proper wording must be used.

The whole thing is weird. Emails from her dad? Donate now to "make her birthday a special one??"

I know these emails are for supporters anyway but... Yikes

Well you signed up for her email list and you already got an email from her dad about that subject, so I think it's safe to assume that you'd understand the context. Maybe that's just me though.

^I didn't sign up for anything.  Re context, see my post above about reading subject lines when you get an email from someone you don't know.

That's what these emails are always like. Old people love that kind of stuff and old people have money. My grandma used to talk about getting letters like this from candidates and how she donated money to their campaign. The idea is to humanize them. You and I know it's all very calculated but not everyone is that savvy. They figure the savvy donors will know what they're up to and give anyway and the un-savvy ones will be inspired to give.

^I didn't sign up for anything.  Re context, see my post above about reading subject lines when you get an email from someone you don't know.

How did they get your email then? Campaigns don't just send out random emails. They have a mailing list that you sign up for. You might've signed up for it unknowingly? I don't know, but it's not random.

^I assume they got it off some Democratic list. I think I gave to Obama. I certainly didn't sign up to get lots of campaign mail from lots of candidates (which I'm getting---not just Kathleen Clyde).
