Posted June 8, 20187 yr For the past year and a half, I've been getting into shooting on film. Of course the process of shooting with film has helped me slow down and think more about the photo before I take it, rather than shooting hundreds of photos with a digital camera and still only ending up with only a few really good shots. It's also been really fascinating to learn about the different types of film and how they affect the look of your photos. I'm still learning but I thought I'd share a few shots here on the forum. These were shot with the Canon AE-1: These were shot with the Hasselblad Xpan, an unusual camera that uses regular rolls of 35mm film, but takes panoramic images nearly twice as wide as a standard 35mm camera:
June 8, 20187 yr Author What bar is that you have the picture from with the asian symbols/letters? That's Kaze at 14th & Vine.
June 8, 20187 yr Ah thanks. Only been there once and didn't think the food was great, but that's a cool looking bar
June 9, 20187 yr Great pictures. What's that area with the James Brown mural? I love the buildings on the left of the photo.

June 9, 20187 yr Great pictures. What's that area with the James Brown mural? I love the buildings on the left of the photo. That is Main St just to the north of Liberty Street in Over the Rhine. I think this is the spot the Piston Society is moving to, in the first building on the corner of Liberty.

June 10, 20187 yr Author Correct, that picture was taken from the intersection where Main and McMicken diverge just north of Liberty, looking south. However, Piston Society is moving into a different storefront, a little bit east of there at Liberty & Hughes.
December 9, 20195 yr Author I also picked up a Pentax 67II medium format camera which is very fun to use, but due to it being extremely large and heavy, I don't take it out to do street photography that often.
December 9, 20195 yr The Pentax shots have a pretty dramatic 3-d effect that digital can't convincingly replicate (at least yet). That 3-D effect gets more dramatic with the larger formats, 4x5, 5x7, and 8x10. The problem is that the larger formats are very difficult to shoot with because the depth of field gets progressively narrower. Also, the film you are using is blowing out the highlights pretty quickly because I assume the Pentax's meter is averaging the whole scene or has a pretty primitive 60/40 center-weighted metering. If you use a hand-held light meter you can avoid the problem entirely by either a)exposing for the highlights or b)the shadows, creating a "high-key" image which is a lot tougher to pull off. Or if you have a production crew you can shoot for the highlights and have the crew bounce light into the shadows with a giant reflector. Like a reflector so big you need 2-3 interns to hold it up.
December 14, 20204 yr Author A couple newer film shots since my last post. With the Canon AE-1 (35mm film): With the Nikon F6 (35mm film): With the Hasselblad Xpan II (panoramas shot on 35mm film): With the Pentax 67II (medium format film):

December 21, 20204 yr Ron's Roost is a million times better than Raising Cane's. It's second only to Richie's, in my book, if only for the lack of some sort of spicy version.
December 21, 20204 yr It's clucking good, or at least it was the last time I was there, which was about 8 years ago.

And sadly, fat lazy Americans will have a line of cars wrapped around Canes twice over, while Rons has a smattering of vehicles in their lot. You can order to-go from Rons and pick up inside much quicker than it would take to wait in that kind of line.

January 12, 20223 yr Author I thought I'd revive this thread with a few random film snapshots taken on various walks around Greater Cincinnati in 2021:
