So why the hell not, lets have a popularity contest for Ohio's best architecture!

I will be accepting nominations in this thread.

Rules:

1. Please nominate two buildings max.

2. If you desire, you may include one photo for the time being. For the final poll one image will be included for reference (subject to change) If you break rule #1 or #2 your post will be deleted by myself.

3. The building must be complete, not a vision, u/c, proposed or demolished.

4. Tentatively i will stop accepting nominations one month from today, April 17th.

5. A building needs a second and a third to be included in the final poll. You can second/third as many buildings as you like.

6. Please be creative, don't limit yourself to only skyscrapers, hell maybe you think a guyed mast is beautiful.

There is a clear winner:

^ Is that the infamous Beast?

Indeed.

Kings Island...Cedar point's little brother....

^them is fightin words

LOL...I KNEW that would get a reaction!

oh please no -- no 70's stuff. the 1970's was the worldwide nadar of decent architecture. so kings island is out, but a rolleroaster is a good nomination tho, i liked that. not so obvious as a building.

uniquely ohio? good stuff? hmmm...

i like this charming old-fashioned lakeside, ohio pier

img48523bw.jpg

for number two lets see, jacknife bridge, swing bridge or hullet? ahh what the heck jackknife (corrected per mayday)

its pretty cool and certainly iconic in cleveland today even tho there are others around the country

img47193xh.jpg

** this was super hard to do -- how do you choose?!?

Only two?!  Ok, I'm going to have to think a bit . . . Couthouses, City Halls, educational buildings, train stations, early commercial buildings, churches . . . it is going to be tough.

It is impossible to find a picture that gives justice to this building.  Plum Street Temple is absolutely gorgeous.

I second that pier..

well.. what could be more Ohio than P&G?  This building, The Gwynn Building, was P&G's headquarters thru the 50's and 60's I think and is actually on the site of the old boy's first candle making shack.  Anyway - a classic beaux arts style... a real beaut in my books

IMG_1546.jpg

I could list a dozen buildings that I really really like, but the best interior public space in Ohio, is the rotunda at Union Terminal.  The murals are beautiful and optimistic.  The building as a whole is extremely functional but also universal in it's forms and adaptive reuse as a museum.  It is a building that continues the humanist tradition of conveying a message or telling a story.  It takes my breath away.  From the beautiful marbles used to the straightforward American attitude, it is a quintessential Ohio building.

Serpent Mound in Adams, Co. would be my #2.

lgserp.gif

"for number two lets see, swing bridge or hullet? ahh what the heck"

That's actually the jackknife bridge, not the swing bridge.

I'll nominate two interiors - both are absolutely breathtaking but each is a beautiful example of their period. Neither photo can do justice, but they give you the idea.

The Arcade in Cleveland - Victorian:

arcade1204.jpg

Palm Court in Cincinnati - Art Deco:

DT68.JPG

wow i see this is getting insanely difficult. all of those are great choices.

the serpent mound -- yes, good one!

the best in ohio? hmmmm. how about the supreme court building in columbus on front street? this buiding definately gives cincy and cleveland a run for its money

Some shitty pier and a bridge beating THE BEAST?!?!

Surely, laughable! LOL!!!

oh please if you want a coaster at least get a real one with some bones and class, not some 70's queso in a cornfield park. hey well you're at it why not that eiffel tower too as your second choice? lol!

A REAL coaster?  Like what, the Villain?  The Mean Streak?  MILLENIUM FORCE?!!  LOL!!

Oy schleheim.  The non-coaster enthusiasts...tsk tsk...

It's like calling Gehry's building in Cleveland more impressive than the Eiffel Tower.  Just blasphemy.

non-coaster enthusiasts????  ugh, it's you classic coaster haters dat have da woist taste.

oh well po tay toes. po taa toes.

ps-- gehry's building certainly is more impressive than your eiff-faux tower. sheesh!:

tower1.jpg

A). The PKI Eiffel Tower is more world-reknowned than a bootleg Seattle thing in University Circle

B). The Beast is a classic coaster, you Millennium Force-lover.  You, sir, should be ashamed.  What's next?  The Coney Island Cyclone inferior to Kingda Ka in SF GAdv??!?!

BLASPHEMY!!!

Get it straight, man! Our PBL building is a bootleg Bilbao thing. The EMP came after it and doesn't look like it.  Know your individually torqued stainless steel panels!

Well, guess it shows how much I appreciate Gehry.

Oh wait.  I don't.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

my good man, the fake king's cornfield eiffel tower is not even as world reknowned as the vegas eiffel fake. or the the seattle eiffel fake for that matter - haardehar:

http://www.trixiepixgraphics.com/scanshtm/c-52.html

and if you insist on your tasteless modern coasters, well....umhmm you go on then. it's you who should be ashamed of mentioning the cyclone in the presence of those newfangled contraptions!

The Beast being even compared to MF and the rest of those Cedar Point coasters (save Blue Streak and Magnum) is just...well...atrocious.

And comparing Kings Island's Eiffel Tower, the very park that started the renaissance of current regional theme parks...to Las Vegas' Awful Tower...mrnyc...take your Cavs jersey and burn it please, right now.  LeBron is ashamed.

I have never been to King's Island....but it seems when I have watched the Discovery Channel when they review and rank amusement parks and their coasters, Cedar Point and it's coasters are always at the top or in the top few....but I have never really heard KI mentioned....

Maybe if LeBron rode the Beast he would be tempted to be traded to the basketball team down that way, oh wait....

My nomination is the chapel at the Lakeview Cemetary here in Cleveland...the Tiffany Glass artwork on the inside is unbelieveable!

that's the wade chapel, and i'll second it. I would love to post my picture of it, but i only have it on film...maybe i'll scan it later

i'm going to nominate the driveways that are in seemingly every! house in cleveland.  :-P

The Beast is in almost all coaster specials, along with Millennium Force, Raptor, and Magnum (occasionally).  The Beast is arguably Ohio's most famous (and legendary) coaster.  Even Cedar Point fans will acknowledge that.

And trust me, LeBron won't even be in Ohio for long so I'm not even worried about that.

when did i compare the beast to any cp coasters? that's been you - lol!

and since when did that fake eiffel in that fake "island" spur anything other than laughs as you drove down the highway or walked around the amusement park? it's a hideous looking horror. bottom line is that there is nada in kings island of uniquely ohio architectural significance. now go renew your blue jackets season tickets!

c-dawg as far as wooden coasters go well arguably indeed. merely making a new one does not put it into significant status. so as far as architecture i'll stick with the old school originals and true classics, not some brady bunch 70's coaster. that said, i liked the ride on the beast it's fun and thats really what counts outside of this thread.

Now if we took the Giant Jesus from in front of Solid Rock Church on I-75 and had him climbing the side of the Eiffel Tower, THEN we would have something unique!

Comparing Cedar Point to King's island isn't fair as Cedar Point is more a worldwide coaster destination, has an outstanding coastal location, and is in a class entirely by itself (Cedar Point IS the Roller Coast).

Interestingly, Kings Island is the country's most attended regional park (even beating Cedar Point, SF Great Adventure, and SF Magic Mountain).  Though I agree Cedar Point is more of a magnet for international tourists (it isn't due to Cedar Point's roller coaster collection but more of marketing).  Interestingly, Cedar Point doesn't even have the best roller coaster collection in the country (though it has one of the best).  But due to Cedar Point's excellent marketing (Discovery Channel, "brand naming," etc), it is easily the country's most famous "thrill park."

Never been to a Blue Jackets game.  And actaully, there IS something at Kings Island that is "architecturally significant," and that's the old carousel (yes Virginia, carousels are architecture too, much like the one at Cedar Point).

Oy vey.  By that standard, the Coney Island Cyclone is a bootleg "Wildcat" or "Leap-the-Dips."  It must be some early 20th Century tacky piece of crap.  Take THAT Lakemont Park!

wow you are reaching for that. the marketing geniuses up there at old cedar point must have everyone hoodwinked about that coaster collection. btw paramount kings island is not the most attended, it is the 16th most popular in the usa in 2005 and cp is practically in a dead heat with it along with a few others. or so i read here:

yes carousels are architecture, but nicking old rides from elsewhere hardly counts. besides, staying logically consistant with your "i like'm new" coaster preference it seems like you should have nominated mansfield's carousel instead.

Didn't I just say REGIONAL park?  That means "Non-Disney, Non-Busch, Non-Year Round" in America.  Only Canada's Wonderland is seasonal and ahead of PKI (but it's in Canada) and Knott's Berry Farm is "year-round; next to Disneyland" so forget that.

The list.

Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Orlando, 16.1 million, +6.5 percent

Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif. 14.5 million, +8.5 percent

Epcot at Walt Disney World in Orlando, 9.9 million, +5.5 percent

Disney-MGM Studios at Walt Disney World in Orlando, 8.6 million, +5 percent

Disney's Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Orlando, 8.2 million, +5 percent

Universal Studios Florida at Universal Orlando, 6.1 million, -8.5 percent

Disney's California Adventure in Anaheim, Calif., 5.8 million, +3.6 percent

Universal's Islands of Adventure at Universal Orlando, 5.76 million, -8.5 percent

SeaWorld Orlando, 5.6 million, +0.2 percent

Universal Studios Hollywood, 4.7 million, -6 percent

Adventuredome at Circus Circus in Las Vegas, 4.5 million, +2.3 percent

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, 4.3 million, +5.1 percent

SeaWorld San Diego, 4.1 million, +2.5 percent

Paramount Canada's Wonderland in Maple, Ontario, 3.6 million, +7 percent

Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, Calif., 3.47 million, -3 percent

Paramount's Kings Island in Kings Island, Ohio, 3.3 million, -5.1 percent

Morey's Piers in Wildwood, N.J., 3.1 million, +1 percent

Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, 3.1 million, -2 percent

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in Santa Cruz, Calif., 3 million, flat

Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, N.J., 2.9 million, +6 percent

Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Ill., 2.8 million, +24 percent

Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, Calif., 2.8 million, +5 percent

Hersheypark in Hershey, Pa., 2.7 million, flat

Busch Gardens Williamsburg, 2.6 million, +8.3 percent

Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., 2.3 million, +7.3 percent

If anything, you proved my point how PKI is the most attended regional (meaning, SEASONAL) park in America.

yes carousels are architecture, but nicking old rides from elsewhere hardly counts. besides, staying logically consistant with your "i like'm new" coaster preference it seems like you should have nominated mansfield's carousel instead.

A). Since when is an "i like'm new" stance?  The Beast is over 30 years old (which is "old" by coaster time).

B). I can't nominate EVERYTHING I like architecturally in Ohio.  Sure, Mansfield's carousel would have been nominated, but the tangent was discussing PKI/CP, not Mansfield.

nope, those are not in ohio.

So basically, the Cyclone isn't an architecture wonder either?  Nor did you even get my point?

Bah mitvah.

But ANYWHO (again), I'd also like to nominate the Ohio Supreme Court Building, as the interior is stunning and the exterior isn't a slouch either.

ooooh i got all your points cdm, i just disagree with all of'em. not only is pki's viacom a bigger company than all of those, the parks are the parks, dont try to explain them into meaninglessness. that list sure didnt, it just added up the people. the beast? it's modern style coaster in a modern park. as for mansfield maybe i wasnt clear or yr just arguing, but the point there was about your lack of logical consistancy in nominating an old carousel instead of a modern carousel when you nominated a modern coaster. trivial? sure, isnt this whole discussion? hehe. finally (waaaa), yes the cyclone is the cyclone but the analogy is non-ohio so rejected on principle. whew -- ok thats all -- i am crying uncle at last! onward, yay for the ohio supreme court building inside and out!

Couple of notes and I'm done.

A). Kings Island isn't run by Viacom/Paramount anylonger and the size of a company does not dictate the marketing of how a park is run/showcased (re: Disney, Universal, etc).  Kings Island, Cedar Point, Knott's, etc are regional parks, not showcase parks like Disney World or Busch Garden.

B).  Cyclone and the Beast are technically "modern-style" coasters, yet both are classics.  Even Magnum XL-200 is a "classic" and it's less than 20 years old.

C). as for mansfield maybe i wasnt clear or yr just arguing, but the point there was about your lack of logical consistancy in nominating an old carousel instead of a modern carousel when you nominated a modern coaster.

Umm...logical consistancy?  Because I chose The Beast, I should've chose a carousel in Mansfield?  Should I have chose the Big Dipper in Geauga Lake instead?  There is no need for logical consistancy in regards to choosing your "favorite architecture."  I could have easily chose the freakin' Space Spiral @ Cedar Point or the big white box that holds the Flight of Fear coaster at Kings Island.  Consistancy means nothing in regards to opinions, as opinions can be quite hypocritical in stance.

yes the cyclone is the cyclone but the analogy is non-ohio so rejected on principle. whew

Oh, is it now?

trivial? sure, isnt this whole discussion? hehe.

Finally, we agree :)  And yes,the Supreme Court Buiding is up there for best in the state.

^oh uncle fer crissakes! oy gefelt!

  • 2 weeks later...

What does it matter which theme park is better. Kings Island and cedar point are both in Ohio. Get a car and visit theme both for Christ sake. Both parks are amazing and both have been at the top of the most visited regional park list. They trade off from year to year. The point is that they are both amazing parks with something different to offer. Visit them both and stop arguing. I would second the nomination as the Beast being an architectural wonder in Ohio. It is historic and an engineering marvel still to this day.

Just be glad the Six Flags Magic Mountain fans are not around. this thread would get way out of hand and off topic.

heh

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Yeah, I know. But I just tell them they've never seen anything like Cedar Point, so visit it before talking shit.

To be fair, some have seen Cedar Point and still prefer Magic Mountain.

I've never met a single person who went to Cedar Point in the summer and said, "I hate that place, fuck Lake Erie and that beach and fuck those roller coasters." Usually people from outside the Midwest come to Sandusky and leave in awe. Cedar Point breaks down negative stereotypes of Lake Erie and Ohio if anything else.

You need to join coaster boards. ;)

Cedar Point will get ripped by some coaster junkies; praised by others.  Much like "urban city" forums like this.  Though generally, everybody will agree that the smaller, older traditional parks (Kennywood, LeSourdesville Lake [when operating], etc) are the best; much like older cities are more revered on urban forums than Atlanta or Charlotte.
