Wooster, Ohio

 

population: 24,811. seat of wayne county.

 

has the college of wooster. named for revolutionary war Brigadier-General David Wooster of Connecticut. courthouse built in 1878. wayne county has a large amish population too

 

so there was a festival here too? come on, i'm getting sick of these things getting in my way :sad: . bad for me but i guess good for the cities.

this one was their oktoberfest. schmidt's made it up here and blocked the courthouse for me

on the square?...i'm sorry but its not really a square in the usual sense of a town square, just 4 streets on a grid...what i'm saying makes more sense if you see it (see bottom of post for more about this)

okay, now more about the 'square' that they have. in visiting these county seats i've noticed there are mostly 3 kinds of layouts: the square(sidney, medina), the main street(marion, coshocton), and the intersection(hillsboro,mt. gilead).

 

the squares are usually surrounding either the courthouse or a park, and the intersections sometimes have a monument or other small thing with a traffic circle in them. i feel that wooster is a main street type, even though they sometimes try to say they have a square :D

anyone follow that? i'm gonna make a topic devoted to this

Are those flowers in the street? I can't quite tell what I'm looking at.

Maybe it's a flowered median strip.

 

It's also interesting how the courthouse is jammed onto the block instead of being kind of isolated by itself like you usually see.

The courthouse is pretty classy. It looks like it's had a good cleaning since the last time I saw it, about ten years ago.

 

Amish patronize natural food stores, too.

Those male figures acting like columns are called caryatids which are columns shaped like human beings. The most famous ones are the caryatid maidens on the Erechtheum, a temple on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece.

 

That's a nice Second Empire courthouse too--very ornate. Wooster looks pretty good. The College of Wooster is a good school and they also have Rubbermaid though that has been bought out by another company I think.

The flowers must've been a temporary installation as that area in front of the buildings is a small parking lot.  The buildings are set back from the street behind the lot.  3 quarters of the "square" are parking lots (with a chintzy gazebo) and the northwest quarter of the square doesn't exist... because that's where the courthouse is.  The major north-south and east-west through routes go through the middle of this imaginary square.  I assume this square was more park-like at one time... but now it's more parking-like.

ah ok... I unfortunately never made it to Woosterfest... I had to go out of town that weekend... but it looked like a big deal... I had a Wooster photo thread on here too... but unfortunately all my links are now broken :(

PS - You didn't miss much at Woosterfest. How long did you live here?

I lived in Wooster from Oct. 2005 - Dec. 2006.  I had no connection to the area... and I didn't care for my job and wanted to go to grad school.... so I came back to Pennsylvania.
