Just some shots on a stroll from Central Parkway, up Vine to Peete St. and then over to Main St.

New Gateway Condos - not sure if they are moving in yet, but look almost ready for occupancy

then up these steps to Peete St.

dead end of Peete looking East  (having spent a little time in some of the rougher bits of Appalachia, there are parts of Peete St. that have that same feel to me - the terrain, old houses, etc.,  knowing the OTR has/had some from that community in it's mix over the years.)

I like this because, if you look closely, you can see a building on every street along Vine from Court (10th) all the way to 4th, representing many different styles, periods and decades

okay - so this isn't unique to OTR, but I did take it from Central Parkway that same day...

peace from OTR

Quite a dramatic set of pics. Thanks for the tour and walking up so many steps (glad you like 'em).  A couple of those places looked like they are ready to fall down.  Thanks for sharing.

Wonderful!

Very cool...to be honest, that's a route I'd be afraid to walk on my own.  Maybe I should just get over it, but I ain't built for self-defense, don't have street-smarts, and feel like I'd not be in control of the situation...I've driven up Vine too many times seeing the crowds of bored-looking folks in need of something to do, and wouldn't want to be the object of the devil working idle hands...

Anyway, thanks for your bravery (if that's the right term) and the effort to keep bringing us kick-ass threads like this!  I especially dug the one where the back half of the house was drawn on the blank brick wall!

here's that entire wall, plus a close up

There are little stone "recesses" in a couple of spots OTR.  I am aware of a few on Vine. (Or at least visible from Vine.)  That may in fact be it.  And I have no idea what they were for.  I've not been up close to see relation to street, other buildings, or buildings that may have been there.  I actually expect it was more for some sort of carriage or transportation shelter but again, just educated guess.

Riverviewer - I don't feel brave, but do feel adventurous at times.  It's helps that I'm big & ugly I suppose. I don't take my camera out at certain times, and for me the trick is to basically keep moving.  You will notice that my OTR shots either have very few or no people (like on Peete St.) or lots of them.  Vine St. is heavily travelled, I just move along and have never been bothered.  I also understand that this is not my neighborhood and respect that it belongs to the residents.  And whether they are doing right or wrong, they didn't invite me there. I am not concerned as I walk about, just "aware" and don't put myself in situations where I don't belong.

I think the Gateway condos look really cool. But if I bought a condo I'd want it to be highrise.  The Gateway is a nice mix of colors and building materials though.

great walking tour thx. solid rock -- that was a funny one.

That archway that you shot is right next to my house (the white one on the right) That lot has taken over 1.5 years to clean and we are still working on it. There was a house that was torn down lower on the lot. The shoes on the power lines are now gone as of this past weekend, it was a symbolic thing to finally take those down.

The house that is collapsing in on itself is owned by a man named Crawford. We just put another request in for an emergency teardown. the other houses next to the fallen trees are all owned by Jim Hohlbein and will be coming down very soon.

Great pics!  I will have to get you inside some of the new homes and rehabs up there to get some pics also.

Another great set of pictures!  Definitely an interesting subject.

Nice tour as always.  I can never see too much of this hood.

Michael - there was a younger lady and gent cleaning the lot to the left of those steps the day I went by, part of your 'crew' I suppose.  Do you have any insight as to the purpose of that arch then?

Great stuff!

  • 4 weeks later...

sorry otrfan, I am about a month late on a response.  The arch is in the process of being planted and will serve as a community garden.  The rocks that are laying at its base will be arranged for a fire pit and we have pavers that will go all the way around that for people to sit.  We are considering a water feature and already have a large pond that may go half way inside the large arch and pumps that will take water up to the second arch so to have a small waterfall effect.
