I recall a restaurant called Eat at Joe's or something like that.  If I recall correctly - and I may not be - it had a 1950s theme going on.  Does this ring a bell with anyone?  It may not have been original but it there pretty early.

btw does anyone have the original store directory for the opening of the Galleria? Would be interesting. Can't find it anywhere.

Some I can recall:

Eddie Bauer

Williams Sonoma

Brookstone

Banana Republic (first in cleveland I think, was the old quonset hut style)

2 level Express (Including exp which was the mens stuff, I think it was the first men's express in Cleveland before the Structure concept)

Units (was a woman's store where everything was basics and in drawers and it was all white inside, I remember it because it was weird and my friend liked to shop there)

American High (I think was the name, it was a high school themed apparel store)

The Limited

Victorias Secret

Dino Palmiri salon (maybe opened later, not original)

There may have been a Benetton??. There was one later at Tower city

That's all I can remember, although if I went in and looked at the store fronts I could probably recall more. I think most of the stores relocated to tower city when it opened.

don't forget moca was originally in the galleria too - talk about a moment in time, you wont see such an odd mix of cutting edge art&retail like that anymore thats for sure!

Groundbreaking for Downtown YMCA at Galleria

Feb 6, 2015

Everyone is smiling in this photo because we are all excited about the new Parker Hannifin Downtown YMCA that is scheduled to open in the Galleria at Erieview by the end of 2015. The groundbreaking event was held yesterday and everyone present contributed to hammering down old walls.

The City of Cleveland provided a $25,000 Neighborhood Development Grant to help with predevelopment expenses towards the $9 million dollar complex that will create 40 full time equivalent jobs and “infuse the Galleria with new life.” Not to mention the additional revenue that will befall surrounding retail from the additional foot traffic.

The new 40,000 square foot fitness facility will include:

Basketball and Racquetball Court

Group Exercise Rooms

Spinning Studio

Three lane lap pool

Message-Therapy Rooms

New Downtown Cleveland YMCA Location Opening This Month

Posted By Bliss Davis [email protected]> on Fri, Mar 11, 2016 at 1:01 pm

The downtown Cleveland location of the YMCA is moving, and it's getting a new name too.

The Cleveland Downtown YMCA will now be called the Parker Hannifin Downtown YMCA, and its new home will be in the Galleria at 1301 East 9th Street. The grand opening for the facility will be held Tuesday, March 29 at 10 a.m. You might have noticed signage in the Galleria touting the coming YMCA location for quite awhile now. Well, it's really almost here.

The facility's tentative group exercise schedule has been posted to its website, as well as photo renderings of what it will look like inside.

A nice destination for the near furure Erieview residents

Although I'm too young to truly know the Galleria during its glory days, I've heard about how great it was and it's decline. I think that the Galleria has done a MARVELOUS job at reinventing itself into what it is today.

Where exactly is that swimming pool? I'm trying to place it. That's not the main floor of the old mall is it? There's a parking garage under that mall...right?

Don't know, but a pool located above another use is no big deal. We have indoor pool on the seventh floor of my condo building.

It's probably not a big deal but it always blows my mind to think of the engineering involved to hold the weight of a pool on upper floors of buildings.  A quick Google search says that a cubic foot of water is 62lbs!

I don't know where else to put this but a study was once done to convert the top floors of the Erieview Tower into condos. At least they thought about it.

Thats hideous.  I like Erieview as it is. It's a perfect example of it's era, much as the Breuer Tower is.  The Galleria mostly repaired the problem of the once windswept plaza that was originally there, but the tower itself is just fine as-is.

Anyone know what the rates are for adults? I see a join fee of $25 on the website but unclear what the monthlies are. Thanks!

Chick-Fil-A opening in the Galleria!

This is so exciting. Now granted I love me some Chick-Fil-A ... :)

But can't hurt the Galleria to have a big name like that open?

I haven't seen anything official on this besides Cleveland news outlets and Cleveland Scene- none of which are credible sources. Won't get my hopes up.

That food court has like 2 tenants left, it's depressing, so I really hope this is true.

The article says its going to be open 2 hours a day for lunch, but 2 hours of a big draw is better than nothing

^That is only for a limited time depending on traffic. Bigger traffic = Longer hours.

I wish this was in more of a visible location, people are so used to not having a reason to go to the Galleria that they will need HEAVY advertising downtown. I hope it succeeds I love Chick-Fil-A!

Business would've really boomed in T.C food court. I will say though, to draw people to the Galleria you have to start somewhere and this could be the start.

I don't see this struggling... Chick-Fil-A is extremely popular. The lunch crowd downtown will be very big I would assume. If this takes off I could see extended hours or even a second location downtown.

This is also not listed on Chickfila's coming soon page, which is well-known due to the fact that CFA makes a big deal about store openings. The first 100 customers get free food for a year. I just don't think I'm buying this- unless I'm proved wrong.

I recently saw that Downtown Evansville, Indiana has a lunchtime Chick-fil-a. Looked like some kind of knock-off franchise, certainly not a full location.

^  "See The Possible"

Love me some chick-fil-a!!

I don't think this will be a full service Chick-fil-a. More than likely this is just a kiosk type outlet with a limited menu of items delivered from their Strongsville location.

They've tried this pop up concept in many locations including some malls here in Northeast Ohio, usually during the holidays. This is a way for the company to gauge interest before going in on a full service restaurant. If it does well, you'll see it permanently. If not, nothing is lost.

Took a look at Galleria. If this is true, it is likely a pop-up, getting food in warmers from rocky river or willoughby. None of the restaurant spaces are being built out and it looked per the usual Galleria- all For Lease signs. Typical wkyc/scene reporting before they have any real facts. How dare they get me excited.

I miss fast food in downtowns :(

I'm sure it's just pop-up for the RNC. And their customers would surely patronize Chick-fil-a without a second thought.

^Why is Chick-fil-A so good/desired?  I had them a bite-size piece of their chicken once  (that was at a catered event) and thought it was pretty bad for fast-food chicken. Was it a blah piece of chicken or is that how it always is?  I don't understand the enthusiasm. If it were a chipotle or a panera, I'd get it. But a chick-fil-A?

There are a lot of Democrats that eat at Chik-Fil-A; your point is that only white Republicans eat there? I'm on the road quite a bit and it's a staple of my drives. Rarely do I see a half-empty restaurant morning to night. More frequently is the store completely full.

Sure, the CEO made an ill-timed remark, but he has since apologized. What more do you want him to do?

Their service is excellent; their food quality is high (and they are removing all artificial ingredient to boot); heck, they offer mouthwash and mints in many locations.

Chick fill a is delicious, you don't get that fast food hangover after eating there

I hope I'm not misunderstanding your comment, but there is surely some fast food options in downtown...pizza fire, chipotle, jimmy john's, subway, Kafeteria, B-Spot, Potbelly, Kabob House, Charley's Philly, Kelly's Cajun...just to name a few and not including the hot dog carts and other food/convenience places like For Goodness Jake's.

Why does that even matter? The CEO (who has since passed on) is entitled to how he feels and his restaurant has never turned anyone away or refused any service or anything like that. Furthermore, his views had nothing to do with Chick-fil-A. Conservative Christians still patronize Starbucks even though its CEO is the antithesis of what they stand for. It's all about the product. Stop politicizing EVERYTHING (and I don't mean that you are politicizing Sherman. It's the fact that you shouldn't even have to defend Chick-fil-A because of what happened)

I am guilty of pulling the thread off topic, and I apologize.

If we are going to discuss Chick-fil-A in this thread, lets keep it centered on how it will impact the Galleria

  • 2 years later...

Seems like the (currently) 4th tallest building downtown deserves it's own thread.  The successful renovation of this building would be a big deal for this section of downtown.

Tower at Erieview, Galleria sell for $16.7 million

By Ginger Christ, The Plain Dealer [email protected]

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The 40-story Tower at Erieview and the adjacent glass-topped Galleria have sold to Cleveland parking lot operator and longtime real estate owner James Kassouf for $16.7 million.

Kassouf heads an investor group that purchased the property at East 12th Street and St. Clair Avenue, from lender-owner RAIT Financial Trust of Philadelphia. The deal closed late Wednesday.

"I remember when the tower was built when I was a young kid. We are a local business and operator that has personal ties to the property and the community and truly want this project to be successful and restored to its former glory," Kassouf said in an emailed response.

More at:  https://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2018/08/tower_at_erieview_galleria_sel.html

The addition of a garage entrance off of East Ninth is concerning... not sure about that. But I am curious what they plan to do with the Galleria?  The article doesn’t really say.

^ The Kassouff's are parking operators first and foremost.  I might feel better if just about anyone else made this purchase.

I'm almost embarrassed to ask this, but where are the current vehicular entries to the underground parking? I did a quick streetview walk around the perimeter of the complex and don't think I saw a single curb cut.

Fair point but a landlord who makes any effort to attract tenants would be a huge upgrade. My company asked for a proposal for leasing 4,000 sqf in the Tower last year and it wasn't remotely competitive. Clearly they weren't investing in the property.

In terms of parking, UO members don't want to hear it but most downtown workers want to drive. Adding parking by converting zombie retail space isn't a bad thing. The garage entrance is off E. 12th

The parking entrance if off Lakeside.
