"We expect to spend something north of $14 million in hard dollars on the project. That does not include the acquisition, so we'll invest a total of about $19 million," he said. February 16, 20214 yr Polsky's should have been sold off years ago. I recall President Marion Reubel considering it, but when Proenza became President, he saw Polsky's as essential for UA's growth and expansion. 20 years later, things have come full circle, except that UA is financially worse off now than before, with even lower enrollment, and grim prospects for easily reversing either of these trends in the foreseeable future. Proenza's "moon shot" ended up missing the mark with InfoCision stadium representing the pinnacle of overreach and misinvestment, to put it mildly. Also, some properties never should have been bought in the first place, Quaker Square among them. It's unfortunate for the university, and for the city of Akron itself, that UA didn't turn out to be the sustainable juggernaut that the area needed to power its growth. For a lot of reasons, UA isn't Ohio State, and never will be.

March 8, 20241 yr University of Akron explores privatizing its student housing by Arielle Kass March 8, 2024 The University of Akron, which has $80 million in debt on its nine residence halls, is considering selling control of its student housing to a private company that would pay for upgrades to its dorms — and perhaps build new ones. The university is looking for a public-private partnership to maintain and operate its residence halls. It has requested information from three companies and opened its proposal (below) to others. The business partners would also finance and build new dorms, if necessary. The request is open-ended, and, with any agreement, the university is looking for ways to improve the student experience, said John Messina, the university’s vice president for student affairs. C. - The National Science Foundation has awarded the University of Akron $660,421 to fund a program that examines semicrystalline polymers, a type of plastic used in everything from grocery bags to high-performance fibers, U.S. Rep. Emilia Sykes announced. The polymers get their unique strength from the way their molecular structures form and reorganize during processing. The “Crystallization and Reorganization Pathway of Semicrystalline Polymers” project will explore how semicrystalline polymers crystallize and change at the molecular level, paving the way for the development of new and improved materials. The research overseen by Professor Toshi Miyoshi of the University of Akron School of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering will run from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2029. https://www.cleveland.com/news/2025/03/university-of-akron-awarded-660k-for-polymer-research.html
March 21Mar 21 How privatizing student housing at the University of Akron may save tens of millions by Andrew Keiper March 20, 2025 The University of Akron is moving forward with plans to privatize its student housing, a strategy leaders believe will satisfy President R.J. Nemer’s push to pay down the institution’s hefty debt. The 40-year deal, which is expected to be finalized in December, will partner the university with Radnor Property Group and Capstone On-Campus Management. The private companies will take over maintenance of nine residential buildings. https://signalakron.org/how-privatizing-student-housing-at-the-university-of-akron-may-save-tens-of-millions/?_hsenc=p2ANqtz-8daZ_rOAUogpoYF-5doenp2mVmTW4gYyZleFxslzM2FJnk3ZiCjRxsDUxMafbTLUthl97e84kDuM1THk3mxWbFsZM8cg&_hsmi=352962150
