However, that 2017 Carnegie proposal... "he lives now, only in my memory." When this rendering first dropped, people in the Lakewood Community Facebook page were talking about how the building was "too tall" and "didn't fit in Lakewood's character." Really? There are several buildings in Lakewood that are as tall or taller than this. Two are literally across the street from that site! 😆
May 1, 20241 yr Hello everyone. Haven’t been on in a while. A few years ago I bought a house and I now live directly across from that d@&$ pit. Thanks for the article @KJP. Excited for this and will email the council member expressing my support. Rolled my eyes so hard at that dumb 3 AM delivery truck comment they almost fell out of my skull. We already have ambulances and trains, not to mention bats that currently love that pit and make a high pitched squealing sound all night long. There are other stores getting deliveries too. Can’t wait til that chain link fence is out of my view. I’m thrilled at the idea of walking across the street for groceries. It’s a dream come true. Edited May 2, 20241 yr by mu2010

July 29, 2024Jul 29 Author Downtown Lakewood development to go without grocery store By Ken Prendergast / July 29, 2024 Developers of the proposed Downtown Lakewood mixed-use development said it was a mix of good and bad news that a grocery store chain backed out of the project. The good news is that the developers can proceed with a previous plan to offer a larger public plaza facing Detroit Avenue. The bad news was that revising the plans to accommodate the grocer cost the developers eight months of time and inflation in delivering the $100-plus-million project. This is the largest development site Lakewood is likely to get for the next few decades, I wish they were taking advantage of it. The taller building would have added some nice balance with how big and out of place the Center North building looks and the 2 taller Westerly apartment buildings in this stretch.

October 15, 2024Oct 15 The grocery tenant deal tanked because the City would not permit Casto to increase the size of the retail/commercial component of the project because of parking and the desire to have new housing stock in the City. The City also wants small shop retail to bring in some national fast casual restaurants who would love to be in Lakewood because of the density and demographics. An urban format Meijer, Fresh Thyme or Trader Joe's would have been nice to force Giant Eagle to fully upgrade their store. Any ideas where else one of these smaller grocery stores could locate?
October 15, 2024Oct 15 If they do intend to block the west side of the Curtis Building with Junipers etc. there's going to be a problem lol.

The City of Lakewood always amazes me at how easily they get in their own way....No grocery store and 600 parking spaces later here we are. Also in terms of a small format grocer, I have no insight but the former right aid on 65th seems like a prime spot. I think its around 15k square feet

This is confusing to me because the original concept was scaled down. Why couldn't they have a grocery store and just built taller to get more housing? Overall I have no idea how they justified that much parking without a large retail tenant. There are still plenty of open and/or underutilized lots along Detroit for a new grocery store. Or how about the Value World on the east side of Lakewood?
October 16, 2024Oct 16 ^Or why can’t apartments be added to the Giant Eagle site along Detroit? There is never anyone parked in the lot along Detroit.

With Giant Eagle at Bunts and Sapell's at 117th, the east side of Lakewood is pretty well covered. I think a great area to put a grocery store would be at the western end of Madison. It is a walkable neighborhood with a lot of multi-family housing.

I used to live in southwestern Lakewood and it was sort of equidistant from the 117th stores, the Bunts Giant Eagle, and the West Park one. Definitely a first world problem, but a walkable one in the neighborhood would have been incredible.

December 17, 2024Dec 17 Ok, well it is a huge downgrade from some of the original proposals from years ago but since we weren't getting any of them anyway, l think this version is pretty good. Lakewood gets more needed density in the heart of downtown plus it adds more NEW housing which, speaking as the owner of a 1908 Lakewood home l think the city desperately needs.
February 7Feb 7 I hope I didn't miss this and it's actually news. So I think this should be taken with a grain, maybe several, of salt, but my partner works at the clinic and was talking to a visitor who volunteered that the urban Meijer in Fairfax wasn't doing well and they are pulling back all their planned urban format stores in the area, including, apparently, the CASTO development. I guess this guy admitted that Lakewood would be a better location for the store but I guess Meijer was the grocer and the Fairfax store is the reason for pulling out.
February 8Feb 8 ^ As far as being in Lakewodd goes, it would not take much effort at all to be better than Lakewood's Giant Eagle. But with Heinens on the Rocky River border and Lucky's on the CLE border I am not sure how another grocer pencils out, demand-wise.
