Conveniently, that's the view they show us the least yet the one I'm most concerned about based on what we've seen previously

Edit to add: previous rendering

Looking at the original north market building, I think another additional thing to do in the future would be roof access. It would be a great place for it and would provide more places to eat, the rooftop at budd dairy always seems busy.

I was in the AD earlier and since the Blue Jackets are on the road tonight, I thought I'd take a quick loop around the Market

From these pictures it really looks like construction on this building is set to blast off.

Every time I've been down there, which is a lot, and every time I've seen photos posted here there is very obvious progress. Seems like they are not messing around, going to be awesome to watch this thing go up.

From driving into downtown on 670 a few minutes ago, it looked like an erector crane is on site to put up the tower crane today...

Any updates on how the erecting is going?

So happy those buildings will basically always be there now!

...until next week when they announce a 13-story yuppie box inspired by the Rhodes & AEP Towers.

Now that the crane is up, you can get a great sense of the space Merchant will fill in the skyline. This is the view from the west side of the Scioto, near Vets.

That is also the greatest photo of the AEP Tower I've ever seen.  Well done.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

So the angled glass atrium at the top of the AEP building ends almost flush with the roof. No parapet. Just a 2 or 3 rail open railing. And looking down that is... daunting. One slip of the step and it's a glass slide to... well, anyway. They also provide great sound tunnels so you can hear conversations in the plaza clear as day when the weather is still.

It's also exciting that they got the crane up prior to the MLS Cup Final on Saturday. It will be nice to have two tower cranes visible within the downtown skyline for the skyline shots on the national TV broadcast.

Keep the posts coming!  Want to see updates like I do for Sherwin Williams in Cleveland

Dang, since shovels hit ground this thing has been moving at a lightining fast pace!

I don't even remember a true ground breaking ceremony lol

I think this is my favorite construction project in Columbus. I can't wait to watch this come alive the next 2 years.

Still waiting on a construction cam to surface…my work productivity will plummet if one ever appears, lol.

Will this be all concrete construction like the Hilton 2.0, or will steel go into this?

I've asked the GC and no one I've spoken to knows.

Probably had to do with the skeletons and such they had to remove first.

Happy New Year!  Hope everyone has a great 2024!

Up, up and away at the Merchant Building!

North Market business decline

The comments about parking in that thread are just laughable. Like we get it, you go downtown two times a year or so and when you were last here in 2022 there was a parking lot there.

I go fairly frequently and it's always busy though, especially during peak hours.

Yeah it cracked me up when people would mention the vine st garage and the people would respond, well it’s still not that convenient. They would also just ignore me when I said there was plenty of meter parking.

saw two comments from people that thought the market was closed entirely and I’m always confused how these types of people function in society.

I think WFH has probably impacted NM (and downtown generally) the most, as there are a lot less people in the immediate area making up the weekday lunch crowd. The construction no doubt has some impact as well, whether real or perceived, but any doom and gloom comments seem overblown, especially with the city stepping up with cash subsidies to offset lower footfall

Like the SN streetscape work, there will be some short term pain until completion but the end result will be worth it

I also have a feeling the other vendors are fine and that’s why they only interview one shop. It’s sad to lose places that have been around for so long, but maybe people just don’t like the food at that stand anymore.

Yeah they interviewed the shop that is arguably the least convenient place to grab a quick bite to eat from. The market thrives on people who spend under an hour there, I'm not going there to eat a full Italian dinner. If I do want a full Italian dinner, I'm much more likely to go to a full service sit down place. I'm usually stopping in for something quick and not messy. I just want some momo's!

Once the foundation is done, it’ll rise pretty quickly. With winter there’s challenges of keeping the concrete warm enough to cure, hence the blankets. They have sensors within the concrete ensuring it is curing appropriately and if not, crews are immediately dispatched to recover it, etc. It’s an extremely delicate phase - especially since this is the very base of the structure. Given where it’s at now, I’m thinking it’ll be around March-May when we see the above-grade structure begin to rise. They are already curing a significant portion now - and it seems we have a few more pours to go.

A little off topic, but with how nice the Junto is, I am excited to see the hotel portion of this and hope it has a similar feel to The Junto.

The Junto is raved about by everyone I know. I haven’t been yet but I certainly think the convention center will be able to support something like that. On a side note, as I looked at the convention center/Hilton more closely, it appears like they are planning expand the CC upward. There’s a very large windowless region on the Hilton that lacks any character/detail at all on that side.

Agreed. Rockbridge and Makeready do good work when it comes to hotels.

Maybe someday, but that's really a result of all the back of house spaces required to support the meeting and ballrooms on those floors.

I don’t know if that is in the plans currently. Part of their budget for this year is for roof repair, so I don’t think they would add on until that roof needs repaired again.

I bet it’ll happen with the naming rights. If not then, definitely when Amtrak comes through.
