Was gonna say the same thing. Never seen their dinner traffic for comparison, but anytime I’ve gone there for lunch during the week it’s been packed, especially when any convention is going on. Obviously that’s just anecdotal, and it’d be interesting to see actual sales figures, but things have looked fine from a foot traffic standpoint when I’ve visited.

New places are still opening so they must have decent traffic to convince people to come and open up shop. I’m excited to see the future for the market, with expansion and the increase in population in the surrounding area.

1000% percent. The Market gets packed for lunch and it gets busy for dinner on days when there are events downtown like concerts, hockey games and soccer games. I pop down there fairly regularly and I've never been like "wow, this place is dead". It's more like "there's barely a line to get momos, start sprinting over there now!".

As a business owner I don't like it when people try to judge my business activity on a Tuesday. Salesmen would always come around on Tuesdays and Wednesdays near Halloween and blame the fact that my stores were slow at that time on the fact that I wasn't doing business with them hahaha

When you're heading on 71 south past downtown, you can see this poking above the buildings now from the highway.

Just think, this was 3 years ago. Finishing up the Hilton Tower. I can't wait to see the Merchant Building make an impact on the skyline!

I just really hope our next tall boy ends up filling in a gap because our last two just kinda extended our super wide and spread out skyline. It's incredibly hard to get a good picture of the Columbus skyline that actually includes ALL of the buildings.

It seems like developers in this city just want high st to be the only section with height haha.

Maybe they're misinterpreting the name as "Height Street"?

I've concluded that's not really possible unless you get an aerial shot, haha. High Street N/S doesn't have all the skyscrapers...Broad St has a large number too, and just getting a view that accommodates the stretch from Hilton/Merchant Tower to the Franklin County Courthouse is most likely going to leave all the buildings behind Rhodes Tower hidden.

I really hope larger developments start around the Spring/Long Street area along Fourth Street. Add a few 20+ in that area and it will start to fill in nicely!

It is very spread out! I think a good shot would be from 670 near Abbott. Here's a shot from I believe ODOT showing just how spread out the skyline really is.

1000022608.jpg

Grandview Avenue bridge above I-670 is the best shot of basically all the buildings.

If you're referring to elevator cores yes, floor-wise not at all.

Which highrise already built will this be comparable to in height?

It's planned to be 382', I believe, so it will be right between Three Nationwide (408') and One Columbus (366').

It’s crazy that this building will only be 4 floors shorter than the new Sherwin Williams HQ but is 300 some feet shorter.

I wonder if it's because the Sherwin Williams building is all office floors which are usually a few feet taller than residential floors. Half of The Merchant Building will have residential height ceilings.

The Merchant Building has floor-to-floor heights of 10' for most floors. The Sherwin Williams HQ averages out closer to 15'-16'.

That is what I figured, it’s just crazy that it can vary by that much. Overall merchant will be a better addition because of the living/amenities. Height isn’t really important to me overall and I would rather have the increase in north market space and more housing.

You can see in the photos from Wednesday that the tower crane is prepped to jump. They may be waiting on the best weather, as it's a fairly precarious process if there's too much wind, etc.

Same! This thing is really starting to make its presence known! Can’t wait for the next tower to get started downtown.

Are we talking another 30+? If so I say we have a 4-5 years before we see another one, if not more. 22+ I say we get one within 2 years.

I think it will mostly be all mix, with a floor or two of office. I wouldn’t be shocked if we see a decent sized condo tower somewhere downtown again. Once the population continues to grow and more amenities pop up, people will want to own.

I think we will see another large (25-30 stories) hotel near the convention center announced within the next 5 years. I would really like to see the Drury Plaza Hotel demo’d and replaced with a new hotel tower. The current building is so bad.

I think we'll see something on the triangle by 670 or on the corner by Merchant where there's that small surface lot.

Even though it doesn’t really look bad, I would love for the church at high and Goodale to be demoed. It takes up so much damn room and is only used one day a week mostly. It’s enough space to fit a few buildings that would be more useful.

I've thought about that parcel a lot and even mentioned it on here as a potential lot for a new hotel tower. I'm just not sure it is feasible though. I'm no engineer or architect, but it seems like you would have to get extremely creative to make anything work there. I hope I'm wrong though!

I actually love the church, but I hate the surface lot. I wish something could be done about that.

It's actually about as big as some of the towers in the city. I mean with any tower you'll have deep foundation work, but its very doable.

You could get something 5/3rd or Key tower size on that lot, which I'd say is a win.

Yeah the church is beautiful, but it’s just such a huge area and should be used more creatively.

I hope you are right! Given the small size, it would definitely force you to build up pretty high and would hopefully result in an interesting design as well.

The foundation conditions in any of the lots bordering 670 will be a challenge, but not insurmountable. The AC hotel's construction had to work around the tiebacks for the retaining walls, but they were able to make it work. It may require some foundation gymnastics similar to what the Hilton tower had to do on its site to avoid existing underground conditions.

Do you think the dimensions of the lot make a tower realistically doable?

I wish something 25+ would go on the triangular grass lot at High and Nationwide.

I don’t see why not, it’s pretty similar in size to the Hilton tower lot.
