Meh, Cleveland has an 'iconic' skyscraper and it's skyline is still hideous. Downtown Columbus needs more human-scale infill, low and medium-rise buildings and less surface lots. You guys are so obsessed with large towers...

I think Nationwide is beautiful at night, personally.

I guess you’re entitled to your opinion. I personally love Cleveland’s skyline. I agree with OhiosFinest. We need a new tallest. Rhodes tower is hideous and it’s been our tallest for 47 years. I’d love to see a new skyscraper that changes our whole skyline along with whats already being built and proposed.

I just want a more modern skyline. It doesn't really look any different from when I was a kid.

Yeah it really hasn’t changed much. I remember as a kid watching the Huntington Center, Riffe Center, Franklin County Courthouse, William Green Building, and Three Nationwide get built in the 80’s and 90‘s and since then not a whole lot. Maranova, 5/3 Center, and Nationwide’s North Bank Condo tower are pretty much all the tall buildings 20 stories or taller that we’ve had since 2000. Finally we’re getting the Hilton, North Market tower, and I pray to God we get Harmony Tower. The skyline is finally changing a little but the more the merrier! ETA, too bad Millennial Tower looks dead. That would’ve filled a nice gap in our skyline.

Downtown Columbus essentially has the worst geography for promoting a dense, tall skyline. It isn't surrounded by large protected parks, a harbor, steep hills or other major constraints. Also, isn't there much more of an incentive to build in the Short North, with the tax abatements/subsidies? I don't know if it's still skewed towards the Short North but it was a couple years ago. When successful restaurants are being priced out of their own neighborhood, it's time to end the subsidies...

Downtown Cleveland has so many people walking around on Friday nights and weekends. I wish Downtown Columbus were more like that.

Especially considering three of the tallest buildings built since 1991 really aren't even part of the skyline in the sense that when photos are taken of the skyline, those buildings aren't in it. Franklin County Government Center, Miranova Condominiums and the James.

Edited by TIm

Yeah, that's what I meant. Sure, new stuff has been built but when I go into town coming from the west, the skyline looks the same as it always has, to me. It would be nice if Miranova were more visible from different vantage points, I think it's a great-looking building. Franklin County Government Center... I'll never be a fan of that building because it reminds me of court... I had to go there for a reckless driving charge when I hit a guard rail off of 270 because I swerved after two cars crashed into each other right in front of me.

Ha! I hate that building too! If I never have to go to court or step in that building again I’ll be a happy man.

Jobs that would be Downtown in Cincinnati are in Dublin/Worthington/Westerville, Polaris and Easton here.

It seems to be going a lot faster now. Pretty sure they are at a point where they don’t have to do any crazy angles or anything, just straight up from this point.

Just from seeing it from 670W every morning, it looks to me like it’s picking up quite a bit now.

A second buck hoist was installed to reach the upper floors.

Should be on the pace of about a floor every week on the tower, but the floor-to-floor height isn't nearly as great as the lower levels, so it doesn't look as drastic.

^Hilton 2.0 is definitely making itself known bit by bit. Great photo - it looks like it's from the AEP building. For some reason I like that perspective of 1 Nationwide. Not a fan of the parking garage district, but I guess it's better than surface lots.

Couldn't snag a pic but the cladding is going on in the portion closest to the sky bridge along high street. Maybe just a test area but it is up.

So do we know yet what is planned for the massive parking lot where the demolished parking garage used to be?(lower right hand corner?)

I always hoped AEP would construct a sister building to their corporate offices across the street - something that would contrast well with the brutalist structure and interact with that area of Marconi Blvd. Maybe CDDC could put the idea in the heads of the powers that be over at AEP.

I'm pretty sure NRI owns about 80% of that vacant lot, and the city owns the remaining 20% closest to the Police HQ. I've been hoping NRI would build some type of hotel right there and then the city could put a little pocket park on the corner, but I doubt that will ever happen. It would be a nice spot for a hotel though. It seems isolated in the middle of a bunch of parking garages, but it's actually just a couple blocks from Nationwide Arena and the rest of the AD. It's also an easy walk to the Scioto Mile and the Palace Theater.

I’m hoping NRI sells a bunch of their land downtown. We need a lot more outside investment downtown. NRI builds mostly tired and boring buildings, outside of the condo on the river.

The wall on the rear of AEP is there on purpose so a future tower that mirrors the first half would go there with elevators still being at the core. It would make it almost a figure 8 like shape.

I guess we'll see if we get a third unsuccessful faux terra-cotta building on High Street.... Luckily there is a lot more glass than fiber cement board. Still half surprised it isn't a more pastel color/shade to coordinate with the majority of the GCCC.

^As I recall on the rendering, this is the only place the pre-cast will be at street level. You wouldn’t be able to tell what the material is on the upper floors from the street. I think you’re right about the rest of the facade - its glass.

I drove by the site around 9:30 last night. All the floors were lit up and I could hear construction activity.

I wonder if they are running 2 shifts?

Is pouring concrete temperature sensitive? Over at Gravity 2.0, they worked 3rd shift for exactly one night, and it seems like they just poured some concrete. I was wondering why they would work overnight once.

It is in that if you want one concrete structure/piece (like a floor plate or foundation), you have to pour it all in one go. If you stop partway through and resume the next day, there will be a “seam” (probably not the technical term..) between the “old” and “new” concrete, and it won’t be as strong. It’s not uncommon for the foundation pour of a tall skyscraper to start in the middle of the night and run all day long, with a small army of cement mixers feeding the site.

edit- I just realized I misread temperature sensitive as time sensitive, oops…

Yes, pouring concrete is very temperature sensitive. High daytime temperatures like we've had recently are not great for pouring concrete. Overnight/early morning concrete pours are pretty common.

They're currently doing most of the precast work as second shift. I assume that's due to the compressed site and lack of laydown area plus freeing up the tower crane for other trades during the day.

This isn’t a great pic, but the new Hilton is really starting to have a presence on High Street. F5259485-8E4C-459F-9B98-C3823BE6B9F8.thumb.jpeg.739864f917e55df3193372a534020f89.jpeg

I drove down 670 for the first time in a while and noticed the tower is almost the same height as the Hyatt. I can’t wait to see it once it’s topped out.

  • 2 weeks later...

It looks like they have started work on the 17th(?) floor. I can never tell exactly which floor they are on, but it looks like there are about 10-12 more floors to go.

Do we have to consider the portion underneath High street (convention center drive) when counting floors and overall height?

Unfortunately, i believe so.    :(

Based on this post by one of the construction engineers, it will be 30 stories tall. That could mean there are two floors below High Street and 28 stories above High Street. It could mean there are 30 stories above High Street. Or, it could be wrong altogether and there will be two stories below High Street and 26 stories above High Street. Who knows.

So based on this post from @.justinback in February, I think it will be 28 stories above High Street and two stories below High Street. The schematics here a bit difficult to read, but it looks like a total of 30 stories if you include the storage level at the top and what appears to be one or two levels below High Street. If @.justincan point us to the original source of the schematics, maybe we can get a clearer look at the wording here.

There is one story below High Street, and 27 occupied floors above (skipping Level 13, the rooftop bar will be Level 28), plus a mechanical penthouse on Level 29.

Level 17 was poured last week and slab prep for Level 18 is underway. The big milestone over the weekend was the installation of the escalators along High Street, which clears the way for curtainwall installation commencement and further precast install. Should be more interesting progress over the next few months.

So 28 floors above High Street, ignoring use.

Is this why they had High Street closed with cranes sitting in the middle of the street?

This would explain why high street was closed in front of the Hilton on Saturday.

This pdf is the document I was referencing; it's an RFP for the furnishings of the new hotel (and refurnishing the old hotel). Unfortunately the schematics (towards the end of the pdf) are pretty grainy.

It does say there will be 20 guest room floors, 6 podium floors, a floor for the rooftop bar, and a lower level (28 floors). The lower level appears to be at grade with Convention Center Drive. There's also a basement level beneath that. Both the lower level and the basement level connect to the existing hotel beneath High Street.

I came across this picture on Instagram this morning. You can see the tower now becoming part of the skyline, even from a distance.

And here's a rough mock-up of what I think this view will look like with this tower and Market Tower topped out.

Yeah, I drove south down high st from campus the other day, and it is noticeable pretty much the whole way. Cannot wait until it’s finished.

High St. closed tonight at 10:30p for work

Well this is to the north of the Hyatt so we'd have to go through some pole reversals to get the sun casting shadows in that direction 😜
