Like they used to have at places like skyscraperpage...like the smiley face that grows into the Chrysler building? And agree with everyone, this tower is so...fulfilling. So many years(decades)to get another 100 meter plus tower...and now we have 2 under construction and Market Tower likely happening as well...with another decent proposal in Harmony Tower(which I really want to happen because of the location, height and design.) Such a good time for Cbus right now. Thanks everyone for the wonderful pic updates! *My 93 year old father recently took another drive all the way down High from Clintonville through downtown and was really surprised by the size of this building. He can remember the area in the 1930's so the change since then must seem amazing. Edited September 27, 20213 yr by Toddguy

There are almost 2 million more people in the metro area now than when he was born! We need to get your dad on UO to do a Q&A session haha.

He does tell me about what it used to be like back then. Like another World really...streetcars, interurbans, no cul-de-sac subdivisions, golfing at the Twin Rivers golf course where the Spring-Sandusky interchange and the Post office are now. All kinds of stuff. And the only "tower" being the Leveque. Apparently High street all the way up including OSU is almost completely unrecognizable to him now. He was working as a paperboy(the old fashioned kind selling them on the street)when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He likes this new tower btw to be on topic. Although, to be fair, I believe they've added a good number of 15-20 story towers over the past few years. Nothing skyline altering, but they've continued to densify their already dense skyline.

They also have way more geographical issues to deal with compared to Columbus. Lots of hills and the KY border and we got a lot of nice flat ground and basically infinite room to expand outwards (not literally).
September 27, 20213 yr Cincinnati saw construction of the 665 ft. Queen City Square building just a decade ago and has had a handful of smaller towers constructed in recent years. While it could have been interesting to redevelop the Millennium Hotel, demolition of the building is only a statistical hit to the skyline. Cincinnati will figure out the TMUD game. Cleveland led at first on the state historic tax credit program as well because Cleveland developers were a big part of establishing the program. Same story with TMUD. It was never a given that the program would be established.

Millennium Hotel aka Stouffers Hotel, was not salvageable. Out of country ownership ran the property into the ground. Sad to see a tall building taken down, but hopeful for a new convention hotel tower in the future. All rumors are for Hilton Signia.
September 27, 20213 yr So we have this, Market Tower planned for a parking lot, Harmony Tower for parking lot...what about the parking lot on Goodale between High and the Parking garage? A perfect spot for another boutique hotel with condos/apartments on top...? I want that lot filled with something at least 15-20 floors. Edited September 27, 20213 yr by Toddguy

It was obviously not meant to be a slight towards Cincinnati. No need for anyone to be defending anyone else's city here as this type of stuff never ends well. As I said, Cincinnati has continued densifying their skyline with very nice mixed-use towers in the past few years. All 3Cs are experiencing very positive movement, each in their own way, and it's something we can all celebrate.

Apparently many people at the time were not too happy about it. They were glad to get a bus over a streetcar, or better yet, a car of their own. Cities were seen as crowded, dirty, and suffering from 15 years of neglect due to depression and war-many people wanted the new-new housing, new roads, new cars, new appliances, etc. People went without for a generation and it had an impact. I have a booklet put out by the city in 1948 summarizing the city and the previous year, and they were almost gleeful in how they were getting started and going to get rid of the streetcars and add busses instead. At least when I have talked to people who are old enough to remember it/lived it, this is what many if not most of them say.

It would definitely be a great spot for a sizeable hotel tower. It can be connected to a parking garage and the convention center and it's practically on the High Street cap. Given how small the lot is, you would probably need a fairly tall tower to make it worth it. It's definitely a spot to watch for a new tower.

And add some apartments/condos on top of the hotel tower, again using the existing parking garage, you could get even more height. Also it would have to be set back about 100 feet south of High anyway so it would not block the views from The Joseph. It just seems to make a lot of sense to go high there. Any amenity deck could be high between the hotel part and residential part and the traffic from 315 would not be as problematic. I hope some developer is seeing all of this as well. It does not get much more "prime location" to me than this. And nothing is lost but a parking lot. Edited September 27, 20213 yr by Toddguy

The convention center owns that lot just as they do the lot the Hilton is being built on. That would probably put out an RFP searching for someone to develop a hotel tower. They are still short on hotel rooms and would want to maximize the number of rooms in the tower. Adding apartments probably wouldn't make much sense, which in my opinion is totally fine.

September 27, 20213 yr 1 minute ago, Toddguy said: Thanks for the extra info and yes just a hotel would make sense. Yea, the reason Market Tower is mixed-use is because the city specifically asked for that in the RFP. Same with Scioto Peninsula. But with anything from the convention center would likely just be a hotel or parking. While we are on the subject (and this could probably be moved to the convention center thread), the surface lot in question is certainly the most attractive of the land that the convention center owns, as far as I'm aware. I know they own the massive surface lot at the NE corner of Nationwide and 4th, and a hotel could certainly go there, but the lot on Goodale is so much more attractive. Based solely on logic and absolutely no inside info, I would expect to see something about the Goodale at some point over the next couple years, depending on how the Covid story continues to play out of course.

October 8, 20213 yr I checked the construction cam today, and it seems like the tower is now growing by about a floor each week. If this progress holds, the tower should top out in about a month and a half.

Need to hurry up and top out so these workers can go build North Market Tower for us!
