Yes but it clashes with the pastels of the convention center and also isn't really a match to the tone of brick at Hilton 1.0 across the street. I don't know why that was the color they chose, it just doesn't seem to reference or intentionally coordinate with anything around it. And considering the two hideous orange buildings that graced the Short North you think they would have shied away from it but apparently someone likes it

October 22, 20213 yr Still mad all these years later they didn't go with the Convention Center design that emulated the look of the Union Station "mall". There were 3 designs: what we got, a more conservative one and the one that looked like Union Station's shopping facade. The two that lost are still not on the internet as far as I can tell. But apparently the OSU library has them in their archives. I wanted the Union Station one to win even as a kid.
October 22, 20213 yr I agree with jebleprls22 in that the Terra cotta is blah, juxtaposed to the convention center or not. If it was being built in Franklinton, I'd have a similar opinion. A number of colors would have worked better. Didn't even have to pay homage to the convention center itself. These tiles just don't look great as an end product. Other examples where they don't look that great include the White Castle building or the apartments at 3rd and high.

October 22, 20213 yr Hmm, no I don't remember either of those. I'm sure I would have remembered that second one... my god. Does NOT fall into the category of "conservative"! First one is pretty light on the visual details. The other one I remember (the "conservative" one) was more like the current Washington D.C. Convention Center. Of course it's been over 30 years since I've seen the other two I remember. They were in the Dispatch and maybe Columbus Monthly.

November 1, 20213 yr Can someone explain to me how they are building this tower? I watch it daily from the Nationwide tower and cannot make sense of it. They are somehow able to assemble the structure for an entire floor in like 2.5 days. There does not appear to be any steel involved. Is it just poured concrete? As you can see from this picture above, each of the additional floors that they build almost look like they are assembling a stage at an outdoor music festival.

The platform you see is formwork for the next floor. Once that is assembled, steel cables are arranged per the structural design and concrete is poured and finished. After a day or so vertical forms are placed for the columns that support the next floor. Once the concrete hardens enough the cables are tensioned. For this tower is seems each floor is poured in two stages which allows the crews to keep working - while concrete cures on one half they are setting up the other half for the next pour. https://www.concretenetwork.com/post-tension/basics.html

Columbus actually does a decent job of lighting buildings up at night. I was just in Denver and the skyline was so dark at night it was kinda odd.

The precast panels will get an acid wash once they're all in place as part of the completion of that scope, which should help even out the tone.

December 10, 20213 yr The roof of the rooftop bar was poured this morning. Note the taller floor to floor height at the top. There are notches in the slab where the outdoor areas are. There might be one more slab for rooftop mechanical items? Won't be long now.

So we need a 1,200' tall tower, which would be in the top 10 on the list of tallest buildings in this country? Don't hold your breath. What exactly do we need a 1,000'+ tower for? I mean sure, it might look cool from a distance, but so what? We need developments that improve urban and activate the street level experience. Cleveland has a 947' tower that is completely soulless at the street level. It looks cool from Lake Erie, but if you are walking down Rockwell Ave. it's just another office building. Which of the areas below are more enjoyable and useful for residents and tourists alike? Similarly in Columbus, our tallest buildings do nothing to improve urban living and the street level experience. You get a lot of pedestrian activity during business hours (or at least you did until Covid), but outside of that they suck the soul out of the area. Which of these areas do residents enjoy more and tourists remember the most? I'm far from opposed to tall towers. I would happily accept more of them, but let's not act like a tall, cool looking tower is going to automatically change the already positive trajectory of our city.
