Looks like they're picking up pace now that they have hit the tower portion of the project. Concrete pours are adding a floor every 2-3 days. The building and crane will start climbing rather swiftly over the new few weeks.

Yea, it seems like it will probably be topped out by the end of the summer or early fall.

Unfortunately I didn't get any pictures, but I was over at the Station 67 event center next to the Spaghetti Warehouse last night, and I could clearly see the top couple of floors that have been poured for the Hilton Tower off in the distance. Seeing that and the Scioto Peninsula project well underway had me pretty excited for how much growth is occurring right now.

Here's the view from Station 67 I'm talking about:

I posted this over in the Columbus Random Photos thread but I figured I'd also post it here as it gives a pretty good sense of the tower's progress so far.

Anyone know the purpose of the orange walls?

They're safety screens.

Safety screens serve a few purposes, mostly the safety of the workers on high-rise sites. The screens protect against/dampen the effects of inclement weather, help crew who have height fears and vertigo, as well as providing a more secured work area. The screens are usually hydraulic and rise with the buildings, typically screening active pour levels and 3 to 4 levels down where rough-ins are beginning. The orange is simply for visibility; I have seen yellow and blue screens as well, just depends on the site.

^Yup, safety. I’ve noticed them in Chicago a couple of weeks ago. Here’s the 78 story One Chicago building, photos from the Skyscraper forum. Can they also provide wind protection? Hate to see anything blown off a tower.

People with a fear of heights and vertigo build skyscrapers?!?!

They do! While they're a heavy gauge screen/mesh, the screens are designed to reduce "wind tunnels" on open floors during construction. They do a pretty solid job of keeping the wind from whipping and blowing things around and off the tower, which reduces the chance of accidents.

Haha, sometimes yeah. Most construction teams and contractors are trade based and not project based, meaning they touch a lot of types of projects, and occasionally you'll end up with a few who don't love heights.

New crane sections are onsite. I'm guessing the crane will be jumping today or tomorrow.

^ Actually I think they are jumping it now!

No jump just yet, the 4 pieces (80’ total height) were sitting there at 5:30 when I drove past. I don’t think the crane can install the extensions itself. There needs to be equipment on the ground to place the new tower bits and I’ll bet the crane operator is not in the cab during this operation. Perhaps they’ll do it over the weekend so they can close High St. I did notice the tower crane is now attached to the 11th floor.

The jump component (whatever it’s called) was moved up to the top of the crane today. I believe the crane actually lifts each new section up to the component and pulls it into the component. Before the section is lifted up hydraulics will lift the section of crane above the jump component to create a gap for the new section.

I found a video on the process.  You're right about how it happens.  Also, according to the video, the process is actually pretty dangerous to complete.

The production quality of that video.... exceeds the narration quality.... prōcess... prōject...

I was totally wrong. The lift mechanism is indeed at the top and they are sliding pieces in now. I’ve never seen this before - it’s very interesting.

We need a video, ASAP!

^I wasn't able to stick around - it's a slow process.

This project is really starting to feel big now. You drive down High Street and you really notice how massive this project is and it isn't even close to topping out.

Yea, other than the guy's bad narration voice, he does a really good job of explaining how it works.  Crazy how the top is only supported by the jack for a short time and it isn't able to support anything other than the vertical forces.  So, any twisting of the top or it not being in absolute perfect balance during the jacking process can cause it to tip.

The crane jump appears to be complete. I wonder if another jump will be necessary before the tower tops out. It's hard to tell from this angle.

It also looks like they've anchored it to the building.

If this tower is going ~100' taller than the Hyatt next door, I think we might see one more jump in a couple months.

Yep, there'll be one more jump to get the tower crane to the final height. The timing of that is related to the completion of the pours for the floors that it needs to be tied into.

Yep, that was my assumption. I would assume they are only allowed to extend so far above their last anchor point. Do you know much taller the crane will grow from this point?

And the tower will be even taller!

Here's a different perspective from Columbus Navigator

Lumin-Sky-Bar-5.jpg

I'm guessing the top of the crane is about how tall the tower will end up being, so this gives us a good sense of the impact it will have on the skyline.

Probably taller. They are at the 11th floor with 19 to go. The floor to floor dimension for the first 7 floors is considerably larger than the hotel room levels so you can't assume the tower will be three times as tall.

Yea it will likely be taller than the top of the crane currently, but from a distance I don't know if it will be a huge difference. Regardless, it will be at least as tall as the crane currently which is very exciting!

I think it’s supposed to be 28 stories? I’m assuming it will be almost as tall as 3 Nationwide

Do we know exactly how many feet this tower is supposed to be? On one website I see 380 feet on another website I see 342 feet. I’m assuming it’s 380 and if it is it will be almost as tall as three nationwide at 408 feet at 27 stories.

Edited by WagHills

^I remember reading somewhere it's closer to 340' tall. I don't know if that's measured from the ground on Convention Center Way or above that on High St.

According to the final FFA filing, the final height ground (sub High St) to crown (roof peak) will be 361' tall.

The 342" number was based on the original bid documents and not sure where wiki or these other sites pulled their numbers. Either way, according to the current legal documents it's set to be 361' tall, almost the exact height as One Columbus tower next door to LeVeque.

Thank you for the clarification. 361” isn’t too shabby. I’ll take it.

I've said it before, but now it's really apparent how dramatic the cantilevered ballroom is going to be over the entry court -- and it's not even at half of its final width.

It’s slowing growing into the skyline

I hate the Nationwide building so so much.

Columbus needs an iconic Skyscraper so badly.  One that is 20-30 floors taller than any of the current ones.  It just does.  A focal point skyscraper would enhance the skyline to a whole new level in my opinion.  We need an icon...badly!!!

It would be nice but I doubt it will happen.

If only the Le'veque Tower was 250ft taller and maybe a bit thicker as well. She's a beaut!

At least they spell things with the windows sometimes. That's more activation at night than most of our skyline.

I’ve said this before but we really do need standards for lighting the top of towers downtown

Meh, Cleveland has an 'iconic' skyscraper and it's skyline is still hideous. Downtown Columbus needs more human-scale infill, low and medium-rise buildings and less surface lots. You guys are so obsessed with large towers...

I think Nationwide is beautiful at night, personally.
