I'm sure people come across money or treasures in some of these old buildings that have not been gutted. A friend of mine found $1000. in the floor of his home all dated from the 1920's-1930's!  This is a good incentive to rehab OTR  :-)

Hmm...a mystery safe with (possibly) $1 million in it.  It sounds like an ingenious way to move a property....

I was just talking to someone who's brother-in-law has a ventilation cleaning business and he averages $1,000 a month in found money and other items.  It was bar talk but I believe it.

^May have some great ideas but they need some promotional understanding because that website is too much.

Photo update: The Galleries at Pendleton

Building Cincinnati, 8/31/07

This pic of the Galleries at Pendleton was taken on Sunday, August 26, 2007.

The first phase of the development, which is being built on Dandridge Street across from the Pendleton Arts Center, will include eight attached townhomes starting at $160,000.

A future phase will include nine units on Pendleton and Spring streets. Those sites are vacant except for two condemned buildings at 1333-1335 Pendleton Street. Standing since the 1870s, these structures will likely be torn down.

The project is being built by Gary Mark Custom Homes.

^ Do you recall the last Cincy story to appear on Planetizen?  I sure don't.

BTW, the story never got published (surprise, surprise).  I submitted another story today about the Gov's plans for embracing alternative energy sources.  I will continue to send them news stories no matter if they publish them or not.  I'm tired of Ohio getting the short end of the stick in national news stories.  We're lamented for being conservative and behind the times...but when we do something that's actually progressive or is news worthy; the media outlets simply overlook us.  This is my way of standing up for O-H . . . I-O.

At-eh-way to take one for the team!

Holy crap...it did!  And I can't believe they published it?!?!?!  I'm going to keep on pumping in the good press about the 'Nati and Ohio.

Rookwood Pottery moving to OTR

Rookwood Pottery Getting Help From State

Rookwood Pottery's revival is getting some help from the state of Ohio.

The Original was established in 1880 and eventually stopped making products, but now there's a different facility, with new owners in Corryville.

But it won't be there for long.

The Rookwood Pottery Company is getting more than $600,000 from the state to move to Over-the-Rhine.

The move will lead to 30 new jobs in the next three years.

The Enquirer published the same headline, but also mentioned at the end Rookwood is considering moving to Kentucky, too?  Are they just trying to plug their beloved NKY???

Here is a rumor that has been floating around these parts for a couple of weeks.  If it is true then this could turn out really nicely.....  Rumor has it a local well known Frenchman  is buying Grammars Restraunt on Walnut.....  8-)

Nicolas Sarkozy?

Nicolas Sarkozy?

LOL

Does this guy ever sleep?  SHEESH!

Ahh can't remember the name of the place but what's the deal with the bar on Sycamore by SCPA building? Not Vinyl, it's another one. It didn't even look like they were in business but they had a sign advertising their happy hour. It looked like a cool place. Is it new?

Below Zero. Haven't been there but a friend says it's pretty cool.

Cool. Is it a restaurant as well?

it is, the have a big Z hanging on the far wall, but in reality it is just an N turned sideways.

Below Zero serves, mainly, super-chilled vodka -- straight. About two-dozen varieties. Not a place to go on an empty stomach. Well, it depends, I guess.

I put this in the 'Cincinnati Restaurant News' but thought I'd post here as well.  But I heard from a good source I think that Jean Robert's restaurant in Gateway is not expected to open until April.  Someone else on here I believe posted that as well so this is just backing that up.

Their floor plans show extensive work, including new stairs to a rooftop deck, and no work has started yet.  So even if they started construction immediately, I think it would be at least 5 months, which already takes you to February or March.

The auditor's records show that Tarbell just sold several parcels to WDC, LLC.  (I didn't confirm but I think they include the Grammer's parcels.)  The interesting part is that WDC, LLC's statutory agent is Martin Wade, one of Jean-Robert's partners.  Coincidence?  I think not.

Below Zero is on Walnut, so you're probably thinking of Ocho Rios. When I walk past that place, what appears to be the main entrance (through the gate and under the awning) is in fact the VIP entrance. Where is the non-VIP entrance??

And yeah, Below Zero is nice -- very urban, loungy, sofa-happy feel, like you'd expect in NYC or London -- or San Francisco, which is where one of the owner-managers is from. (His partner is English.) I was there on a Wednesday, and the crowd was largely gay men (vodka/martini bar in Cincy, remember), but I don't know if this is true on weekends. Anyone wanna check it out w/ me, let me know!

Yeah I was driving down Walnut and noticed Below Zero is Nick Spencer's old bar. What I'm talking about is not that one. It might be Ocho Rios. It's up past Vinyl I believe, but short of the old SCPA building on Sycamore. I thought it was strange that I've never heard of it (even on here) yet they seem to be quite successful. I don't know.

Posted this in 'Cincinnati Restaurant News' as well . . . But I was told last week that the Christian Moerlein brewpub planned for OTR's Gateway is a no go.  They couldn't make that site work but the person I spoke to believed the brewpub folks were still interested in the concept and looking at other sites.

Try it again, Chris (the owner) has done a lot of good things in the past year he has owned it.  He's worked with CPD to cut down on the kids loitering, the litter is down, the gas and air pumps work fine every time I've been there, and the classical music does work.

So much for the classical music stopping crime

Emergency crews were called to the scene of a shooting in Over The Rhine early Tuesday morning.

It happened about around 6:00 a.m. on Moore Street near the Liberty Shell gas station.

A man was shot in the chest and rushed to the hospital where his condition is unknown.

I hope you're just being snarky.  The gas station and how it's run don't appear to have anything to do with this, except for the fact that the guy stumbled there after he was shot.

So .... are you hinting at a Moerlein pub moving to J-Hall?!

No, but what better place? You are an agent, make some calls!!!!

Yeah ... but I don't work with commercial property or retail leases.  :-P

^ I too love the approach.  OTR needs pioneering (and legitimate) businesses to occupy as much space as possible.  Fresh storefronts will help with perception which will help with home ownership rates and spur new development.

Does anyone know exactly what part of OTR this will be located in?

Does anyone know what building they're moving into?

^ I was wondering that too.

Question - Do you think a small cooking, bakeware, cookbook, everything for kitchen kind of store would do well either at Findlay a la "North Market Cook Ware" (http://www.northmarket.com/merchants/merchant_detail.php?m=North+Market+Cook+Ware) or in Gateway Quarter that might compliment the homestores gathering there - MetroNation, Lucky Step, Mica, Park + Vine, etc.?  Maybe more a question for a different thread.

They're supposed to be closing or just closed on the Catanzaro Building at 1920 Race Street (just north of Findlay Market).  I think they might be looking at other property around there for the retail/cafe space.  I saw Chris scoping out some other buildings in the area.

That will be a great addition to the Findlay Market area.

I think it would struggle, at least for the near future.  There was a high end cooking store in Tower Place a few years ago.  That being said, I think Findlay Market would be a better fit.

wine store for findlay, get a lease on an unused market stall for a portion of the profits rather than a fixed rate and you are in buisness.  the only real costs are a 500 dollar liscense and inventory and labor

The 3 types of stores needed at findlay market. 1)Wine store 2)Indian grocery 3) hispanic grocery. With those there would be nore reason for me to leave the basin.

^They definitely need the Mexican Grocery.  Wine is a great idea, but City Cellars works good for me now.

I third a Mexican grocery  That would be wonderful!

How about "City Cellars OTR" I love city cellars. They need to open a smaller store at Findlay.  They could stock GOOD beers like Moerlein OTR, Hudy, Sam Adams etc.

^ I agree.  My routine is normally Findlay and then if I need wine I run down to City Cellars.  Which works but would be better if they had a location there (or a streetcar was built).

i wouldn't be suprised, if city cellars opened up there.  they have had a sign on the elm street side of the market every week for the past month or so.

Developer says lower price point has made difference

OVER-THE-RHINE - Even as year-to-date home sales lag for the region, condominiums in Over-the-Rhine are moving faster than developers expected.

During the past eight months, 28 out of 84 new condos in the Gateway Quarter near 12th and Vine streets have sold, said Matt O'Connor, sales director for Builder Resources, a residential brokerage firm representing the developers of the project.

Yeah ... but I don't work with commercial property or retail leases.

I believe Paul Yankee said he brought it up the other day so we will try and sit down at the table and get him interested.
