Chatfield College has purchased a two-story building on Central Parkway in Over-the-Rhine, just south of Liberty Street.

 

The nonprofit Catholic college's Findlay Market campus is now on the top floor of the St. John’s Social Services building, a few blocks north at West Elder and Logan streets.

College buys OTR building for Findlay Market campus

Chatfield College has purchased a two-story building on Central Parkway in Over-the-Rhine, just south of Liberty Street.

Could be great for the FM lunch crowds! And good to have more people on the streets up there on week days.

An update on Emanuel:

 

Emanuel Community Center has entered into an agreement to sell its historic Over-the-Rhine building and operate an urban squash program to teach children the racquet sport more commonly associated with Ivy League universities than inner city neighborhoods.

 

Emanuel, which has struggled financially for the past several years, will sell the 141-year-old building at 1308 Race Street to Grandin Properties, a Hyde-Park based real estate management company, says Emanuel Board Chairman Russ Naber.

Grandin plans to convert the building into office space targeted at budding entrepreneurs to grow the area’s burgeoning startup community, says President and CEO Peg Wyant.

It will be interesting to see how this affects residents who rely on on-street parking.  I live on Walnut, where there are inexplicably parking meters all the way up the street, even past Liberty, despite there being no businesses there.  I end up having to drive to work downtown some days because I can park for free at work, and can't leave my car at home on the street because of the meters.

I really wish the city would change the parking meter laws so that drivers are not allowed to park at damaged meters.  I see people taking baseball bats to the meters practically every night so that they can park for free the next day.  It's insane.  Look around OTR and you'll see at LEAST one damaged meter every block.

That is insane but changing the law to make on-street parking at a broken meter illegal would wreak havoc I think. More than one time I've ended up parking at a broken meter. I prefer the peace of mind of paying for my meter though - can I get ticketed for parking at a broken meter?

 

Also, do you report these baseball bat wielding vandals? I would think if this was a common/repeated problem there who be a way to find out who was behind it.

Posted an article about this in the Cincinnati Crime Discussion thread, since that is a more appropriate place than here. You should call 911 if you see someone vandalizing a meter.

Does anyone know how much the rhinehaus renovation costs?

 

I'm just curious how much renovating this size of a building costs. I would love to do something similar some day.

Both of those projects look fantastic!  I'm really suprised more of the buildings around Washington Park arent already all rehabbed; such prime realestate. 

 

Rhinehaus is going to be amazing once completed, that place will be rolling in cash.

I'm so happy to see this building getting love. It's my favorite on Vine.

 

Not knowing much of the interior layout, is there any possible way of removing the hideous fire escape on the front? This would be so much more amazing if the facade was allowed to stand in its own glory not hidden behind a secondary means of egress.

^probably not because fire code requires two means of egress. BTW, fixing fire escapes is expensive since so few companies do that kind of work.

^I actually usually don't mind fire escapes as just like you said, they add character. But this building's facade is unique to the neighborhood and I would love to see it stand on its own. The only time I wouldn't mind it is if a modern one was put in that was nicely designed. Cable railings, thin as possible. That would work nicely in my opinion but probably wouldn't go over too well from a preservationist standpoint. This is all beside the point though as it probably won't be removed. The building is still absolutely gorgeous though.

 

Words cannot express how excited I am to see this building rehabbed! There are key buildings that I have wanted to see rehabbed in the neighborhood and two of them (this and the SCPA) are now being done so things are all good for me :)

What does the rear of the building abut? Is it open to an alley or something? Could the fire escape be moved to there? I have to agree that fire escape ruins an otherwise beautiful facade.

It backs up to Republic, but it is not the same number of stories as the facade.  BTW, the Cintrifuse project involves all three buildings, with 1313 being in the middle. They have been doing demo work for a while. The building to the South is pretty much gutted.  I think it will basically be a shell and facade, based on what I saw yesterday when the door was open. 1313 still has a decent amount of character inside, at least it did the last time I was there four years ago (which happened to be on a Friday the 13th).  Sadly, all of our photos were lost in an archive format changeover.  http://www.soapboxmedia.com/features/55soapdishwhatliesbeneath.aspx

So you are telling me the rear of the building is shorter than the front in the number of stories? This is kind of strange, but so what? It should not be so difficult to design a fire escape from the top floor to the bottom, even if it has an offset(s) in it. That top floor has to have some rear wall holding it up. Attach the fire escape there and then offset it if the next floor down does not line up.

 

I still say that building would be so much more attractive without that fire escape across its front. It is like putting a gas mask on the Mona Lisa. Maybe you can get used to it but do you really want to?

Adding a stair is extremely expensive and involves a ton of work, but I agree that the fire escape on this building is awful.  Building code does not actually allow new fire escapes to be built these days because they are only marginally safer than remaining in a smoke filled building to take ones chances.  Existing fire escapes are, of course, grandfathered in, but I know some jurisdictions will make you provide a new means of egress dependent upon the extent of renovations.  I don’t think Cincinnati is that picky, though, so this one will probably be allowed to stay.  I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t be allowed to replace it with a newer one, though.

I like the fire escape.  I say keep it for decoration.

I'm not a fan of fire escapes, especially when they are on the building's facade. 21c removed the Metropole's fire escape on Gano St. Does anyone know if this was as a result of stairs being added or fire suppression system being installed. Or perhaps both?

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but the Jack Wood Gallery is moving from O'Bryonville to the Gateway Quarter.  I love that place; have bought three posters there.  Beautiful stuff.  I am a huge fan and very excited.  This should be a great addition.  (It said in a mailer I received that he had lost his lease at the place in O'Bryonville.)

I feel like this discussion has been had on here before, but why is 14th Street the Gateway Quarter? "Gateway" should be one or two blocks into OTR, at most.  I don't like how it is instead used as a term to differentiate the gentrified parts of OTR from the rest of the neighborhood. 

Saw that Cheers to Art is opening on the corner of Vine and Centtral parkway.  This has been a tremendous success in Madeira and will do well in this location. It is basically art class with party/social approcach i.e. drink wine with friends and learn how to paint in  the process. They do a really nice job aand it's very nice night out.  Really good for the kids too during the day. 

The term "Gateway Quarter" is kind of on the way out. It referred to the area from about Central Pkwy to 14th-ish on Vine. The gateway from Downtown. But its falling out of favor as OTR is revitalizing in larger areas now.

Speaking on Eli's, what is their timeline looking like? They will be absolutely slammed.... there really aren't any other fast casual options in OTR for them to compete with.

June. I'd expect a few more dining options in this area this summer as well.

Really?  I'm not seeing the kind of concentrated activity north of Liberty that I see south of it.  Or am I not looking in the right places?

North of Liberty is slowly seeing development, but it's nothing compared to what 3CDC is doing.

What's going on at the northwest corner of Elm and 15th? There used to be a home for the blind there, but now there's a giant hole in the ground.

Put me down for removing the fire escape.  I'm not sure what fire code calls for, but if you could add a sprinkler system and lose the fire escape, I'd call that a win.

Senior apartments may top Central Y

A developer is planning to put affordable senior housing on the top six floors of the Central YMCA in Over-the-Rhine.

 

As part of the project, the YMCA would also renovate its facilities and offices on the building’s bottom three floors and lower level.

^That's awesome! I pass this every day too, and it will be great to have an occuppied street.

The entire street level facade has been removed from the building and the first floor has been opened up.
