It has nothing to do with the more expensive units going in around those areas and coordination with 3cdc?  You don't need a streetscape to attract people to already sold units.

I'm sure the retailers would be willing to be inconvenienced a little now in order to have a more appealing street as soon as possible.

I just hope that in the progress up the block , they aren't neglecting the earlier phases.

^You've been awfully hot and bothered lately.  Take a couple deep breaths...everything will work out fine.

I'm sure the retailers would be willing to be inconvenienced a little now in order to have a more appealing street as soon as possible.

Have a conversation with the retailers, see what they say.  Keep in mind also that they have been going through the past month and a half of being inconvenienced as well with the new gas lines.

First, I am not 100% sure about the streetscaping.  I could be wrong about how they are doing it, the important thing is they are doing it.  Second, future phases rely on the success of previous phases and one phase does not necessarily begin when the last is sold out.  Many units are still left in the previous phases and knowing the sales team down there, they will push the project, not the phase.

It has nothing to do with the more expensive units going in around those areas and coordination with 3cdc?

No, otherwise you would see streetscaping being done on Main where the most expensive units will be.  As I said, I may be wrong about the streets they are beginning with or even the reasoning behind it but if you look at the dollar value on units, the highest exist between 12 and 13 with Duvneck and Trideca, not 13 and 14 and I would bet if you asked the agents, they would prefer the streets not be torn up while introducing a new phase.

are they doing that entire building at the corner of 13th and vine (across Vine st from Trideca)?

Park + Vine News:

The doggie days of summer are proving to be busier than expected, with new wares arriving weekly and plenty of events to keep things vibrant here at Park + Vine. We had fun in the blazing heat at the Cincinnati T-shirt Fest, where we unveiled Cory Shafer's expanded in-house clothing line. We're holding a big summer sale July 25 through Aug. 3, and Patrick Ambrosius is putting his compelling photos of urban Cincinnati on our walls for Final Friday, July 25. Angela Lucarella of Urban Organic is returning for a second kitchen class Aug. 16.

New businesses opening, the Emery Theater gets attention

The world around us continues to change. [glow=yellow,2,300]Enzo's, 1106 Race St., has reopened its doors, while Mahatma is relocating to 1205 Vine Street and Switch, a new lighting store, is opening at 1207 Vine Street this fall.[/glow] In an effort to help resurrect the historic Emery Theater, Give Back Cincinnati is organizing a major cleaning and painting outing July 26. In Pleasant Ridge, Peapod Cafe, a new eating spot that sources food from the Ohio River Valley foodshed, is celebrating its long-awaited opening July 29. Meanwhile, we're saying farewell to our pal Nick Paddock's Nicholas Gallery on Court Street.

Yep :) I've been requesting access into the Emory for a bit now, and Jim gave me the heads up that Give Back Cinci will be in there on July 26. I plan on stopping in and photographing it.

What exactly are they going to be painting?  While they efforts of any volunteer are certainly appreciated, do you really want a bunch of folks who dont know how to paint...painting a historic theature?  Just a question.

"The element emanates naturally from the ground all over the world, but particularly in regions with soils containing granite or shale. However, not all granitic regions are prone to high emissions of radon."

Holy crap.

"Last August, at the Cincinnati Center City Development Corp. offices in the Kroger building overlooking Over-the-Rhine, board member Joe Pichler pointed out the window to this very corner. In 2004, he said, there were 249 calls to the police from there. In 2005 3CDC purchased the site, and since 2006, there have been four calls."

That is amazing!

Re-vitalizing OTR will be the legacy of Joe Pichler if we can manage to finance the rest of the streetcar.

Are you sure you have the right guy? I believe he is one the bigger opponents of the streetcar. This is from Feb 2008. Has he changed his tune?

"One of the top voices opposing Cincinnati's proposed streetcar system behind-the-scenes is Joseph Pichler, the retired Kroger CEO who is vice chairman of 3CDC's board of directors, political and business sources say."

An Afternoon Of Fun And Games In OTR

Reported by: Jacqueline Howard

Excitement filled the air in Over-the-Rhine on Saturday as the 24th annual community festival kicked off with a bang.

The festival began at noon in Washington Park, between Race and Elm Street.  Festivities continue until 6 p.m.

Attendees will enjoy food, raffles and even a talent contest.

The annual festival is celebrated as an all afternoon affair.

I think you might be reading too much into that.  Seems fairly innocuous to me.

I wouldn't be surprised if "bang" was used purposely.  Notice how when you hear lead In's on the news they say "3 shootings on city streets this weekend".  Now I realize that Roselawn and Avondale are part of the "city" of Cincinnati, but am I the only one that thinks they want you to think that these shootings are happening downtown?  They know it will catch people's ear and perpetuate people's insecurities about downtown...  Maybe it's just me...

Anyway, I am excited to see this city home project.  I was under the impression that they were all going to be affordable.  I was really suprised to see that some will be closer to $300,000.  Regardless, I really hope that the people who buy those places bring with them a sense of pride and ownership.  If I see another person toss trash on the street when there is a trash can 5 feet away, I am going to go crazy!  Who knows, maybe it will extend to the park!

People also forget to realize that shootings in this city are no different than shootings in any other midsize to large size city.  I think people around here hear about one killing over the weekend in OTR or near it and think "Oh God there has been no progress, I'm still gonna hide in the burbs" it's pretty ridiculous.  The mentality of this city is pretty much like Minority Report...if Mallory doesn't start a Pre-Crime division and keep Cincy 100% murder free for a few years, we'll still have negative turds saying bad stuff about Cincy.  I think we're doing great and will only get better.

Regardless, I really hope that the people who buy those places bring with them a sense of pride and ownership.  If I see another person toss trash on the street when there is a trash can 5 feet away, I am going to go crazy!  Who knows, maybe it will extend to the park!

On a somewhat related note, if you see a city trash can that is overflowing and needs to be changed out...please report the problem by calling 513.591.6000.  The City needs help realizing what cans need to be changed when.

Thanks, good to know.  Saved it in the phone- I'm sure it'll get good use.

I agree, I hate it when I see someone litter, especially with trash cans all over.

Looks like building permits and black plastic mask the windows on a retail spot on 12th St next to Mica.  Anybody know what's going in?

I think that is the location for Switch.

No, Switch is gong in right next to Mahatma and the Salon/Barber on Vine St.  This spot, while in the 1201 Vine St Building, is entirely on 12th St.  It has huge windows all along it, so I also don't think it'd suit a lighting store very well.  It's the spot where Embrace Sweets was going to be going.  I really think it's designed for a small restuarant/take out/bakery type business.

Reading the permit shows that it's permitted for HVAC and bathrooms...so I guess we'll see.

I'm surprised they dont already go around and see which can's are full.  Would it cost that much more money for the city to send a truck around and look at trash cans? c'mon.

There are thousands of trash cans throughout the city...factor in the cost of gas and man hours and it is clear that it would be extremely costly to do that.  They do have their rotations (check cans every few days...depending on location/past use), but they don't have the money or staff to check each can every day.  Just give them a quick buzz...easy enough.

If you call into the city or go onto Cincinnati's website and make a service request then there is a record of the complaint and every effort has to be made to remedy the complaint in a reasonable amount of time.  The online method is actually better in my opinion because they will send you email updates when the service request has been completed.  Also, the 591-6000 is not limited to just trash can emptying.  Graffiti removal and building barracade are some of the other request that can be made.  If everyone would call when they saw a problem or take a minute and go to the link this will go a long way for all of OTR.

There were some street lights out on Sycamore by the old Diner and I filled out the online request for and it was very easy to make the complaint and get a response.  I hate darkened streets when they shouldn't be.  That is one thing that I really think makes people feel safe or not.

In the latest edition of Cincinnati Magazine, there is a short article on the solar powered trashcans that are being used in some of the city parks.  They have a solar powered trash compactor, can hold something like 10 times the amount of trash as regular trashcans, and they automatically send out notifications to park employees when they are full.  I think the article said there are 10 of these currently in use, but there are 8,000 cans either in the parks or the city...can't remember which.

I've moved discussion about the newly announced City Home project (along Pleasant) to its own thread.  Even though they describe it as being a part of the Gateway Quarter I think it's getting a bit far off for this thread's purpose.  I also think that there will be enough discussion for this particular project to warrant its own thread.

Really?  Nobody?

That is Switch.

So that still leaves three empty storefronts on Vine in Duncanson.  One is Mahatma, one is the Salon, what's the third?

I even saw a note on one of the doors near Mahatma about the guy at mica having the mail for switch...so I guess I am really confused.  Why would Switch want a place with floor to ceiling windows?

^I'm sure if you walked into the Gateway Quarter leasing office they would be more than willing to answer all of your questions.  Heck, most of the business owners would probably be willing to give you the information they have.

Thought I would check here first.  You all seem like you're on top of everything.  You're my resource for news!

Obviously there is some confusion...so at this point it is probably best to go straight to the source.  Thanks though...this is a pretty good source for news/updates.

Cool!  I actually recognize some of those painting for some reason.  I know i saw the one Duveneck at the Taft Museum during a field trip in elementary school.  We were all astonished that the young man in the portrait was smoking a cigar.

Interesting stuff.

Duncanson did the murals that are painted directly on the walls of the main corridors of the Taft house.  Duveneck and Farny were the two best-known Cincinnati artists of the 1800's.  Duveneck also taught painting and might have directed the Cincinnati Art Acadamy for several decades.

To follow on, Duveneck was a very good Catholic and his death was front page news in the Catholic Telegraph.
