Relevant esp with Barley House, but if you're out and about and see some type of violation (PPE, Social Distancing, Hand Sanitizer, etc.) report it here. It gets circulated around powers that be in the county, and hopefully if some enforcement teeth come in from DeWine, it can have even more bite. This works for all sorts of businesses- also what you see on the county site are reports from the Past 14 Days.

Terrible news

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Truly horrible news, but I expect more big closings like this to happen with no help from the government.

Yeah no government aid and I doubt very few of these places will make it.  Really going to hit downtown hard.

Too bad Trump and the republicans could care less.

Yeah, once Biden shuts everything down, that will help.

He's not shutting everything down though.

But the reason businesses are failing is because we failed to contain the spread of the virus.  It's the virus. It's always been the virus.

The government has failed to properly support these businesses during times of decreased capacity.  We know the spread is coming from bars and restaurants so yes I think temporary shutdowns should happen but they need to be supported financially during that time.

The feds have put these governors in an impossible situation to either shut them down destroying the business or let the virus run rampant and kill more people.

There is a clear solution to this, but the GOP doesn’t care because the goal is to make the economy look terrible so they can position themselves for the midterms.  Republicans have no party platform other than to stay in power.  It’s disgusting.

sorry for the off topic, I’ll see myself out.

Moriarty’s Pub closing: 100 years of memories come to an end as owner seeks donations

https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2020/11/moriartys-pub-closing-100-years-of-memories-come-to-an-end-as-owner-seeks-donations.html

This closing is actually NOT directly related to the pandemic, but rather to the sale of the Baker building. (Although I’m sure the pandemic is making it a lot harder for him to secure a new location, as he wants to do.)

“CLEVELAND, Ohio – One of the oldest bars in Cleveland is about to end its 100-year run, closing the door on a colorful past, rich history and many memories.

“Morgan Cavanaugh, who owns Moriarty’s Pub, an E. 6th Street fixture nestled between Superior and Euclid avenues, started a gofundmepage page this month to finance a move to store the bar’s items. Wednesday afternoon, as people were preparing for quiet Thanksgiving dinners at home, Cavanaugh was hustling kegs around, running to the bank, and lining up tradesmen, plumbers, laborers and carpenters.”

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

^ It’s a shame, it’s a great bar and Morgan is certainly a character. I may have been a bit drunk, but I’m sure he told me one time that he’s only the second-ever owner of the bar. He started working there as a college kid in the 70s for an old boy who had owned it since its opening in the 20s and bought it off him.

The article says he’s the third owner - the second owner owned it for decades.

^ My bad. I don’t give cle.com clicks, so didn’t read the article.

What a sad result it would be if Moriarty's ends up re-locating in a suburb like Willoughby. Does downtown even have any old time bars left anymore?

And what is the infatuation of new building owners kicking out long time, and frankly their only, tenants just for the building to sit completely vacant for years, even decades, on the promise of mixed use? 900 Euclid ave, now this.

Edited by AsDustinFoxWouldSay

yeah i hate that. sometimes there are reasons, but often not, its just the end of the lease and the owners do not want to bother. i'm sure they could have at least just stayed month to month for awhile, what's the rush?

Morgan may be a character but he wasn’t real cool when I brought a group of out of towners in there a year or so ago.  Talk about a wet blanket; dude made a bad impression. Now I see he has his hand out to pay for relocating his business. Hmm.

I used to go to Moriaritys before this Morgan guy bought it but it is too bad to see another downtown joint closing.

Goma officially has an Instagram account.  Dante is going to post weekly updates about the construction progress I guess.

Taste of home: Despite the pandemic, trio pursues dream of opening Ethiopian and Eritrean restaurant (in Kamm’s Corners)

The restaurant at 16860 Lorain Ave. in Kamm’s Corners has been over a year in the making. It was born out of Musa, Geremichael, and Weldeslasie’s shared passion for bringing people together through food. The three are from Ethiopia (Gebremichael and Musa) and Eritrea (Weldeslasie) but have lived in Cleveland between six and 20 years.

^ Wow, that could be terrible news, depending on whoever the buyer is. Ironic since my friend just leased an apartment upstairs from Nighttown.

Rico Pietro of Cushman Wakefield is the buyer of Nighttown. Still unclear who the lead chef will be, although not Michael Symon (which, all love to Symon aside, is probably a good thing for the restaurant's continuity). Supposedly the plan is to keep the restaurant mostly unchanged but with some "modest functional renovations." This sounds like a win so long as the new chef has the humility not to screw around with the menu too much. I would wonder if it will be Doug Katz, who just lost his old flagship and has been testing waters in the area recently with his new place Zhug about 100 feet down the road.

It would be interesting if an insider knows what chefs Rico might have a relationship with already.  That might give us a hint as to who it might be.

Help Balaton by dining there/ordering food from there -- and/or donate to their GoFundMe campaign. I did the latter since I won't be able to get over there anytime soon......

As of 11 a.m. today, Balaton raised $60,635. It had hoped to raise $60,000.

Congrats on reaching its fundraising goal. I gave a modest a contribution, but it didn't come close to Larry Nance Jr.'s gift of $10,000!

If that restaurant would be in the Illuminating Bldg (55 Public Sq), I'd get the name, but otherwise, its pretty unimaginative---but its still a heck of a lot better than the previous restaurant name "Chicago's Home" of whatever. Nice to see the space reused and hopefully they'll open as covid is mostly behind us so they won't open and then fail.

Idk how they can do this to Bobby George considering all he's done for the community.

  1. He owns bar none the most gorgeous building in Ohio City at the corner of Detroit and 25th. Not only did his suspiciously timed purchase delay construction on a stupid and (allegedly) transformative community park, but the graffiti that's since accumulated all over the building has built a real "authentic" aesthetic at that otherwise drab corner.
  2. His bone broth has cured literally thousands of Covid cases. Don't argue.
  3. Allowing people to get drunk and dance in close quarters has led to the conception of dozens of babies during this pandemic - which is great news. Unless you hate babies and families.
  4. He showed Northeast Ohio that tolerance is more important than discipline - and that you can reform someone who screams "GO BACK TO YOUR COUNTRY" (who among us hasn't?) on a message board with a stern conversation, and subsequently airing your grievances with the recipient of the xenophobic remarks via Facebook.
  5. He opens his restaurant up to the homeless once annually for an hour (big advocate of Caddy Day at Bushwood) - and it's a complete coincidence that every local celebrity and news camera is also invited.

If you stupid libs didn't get triggered so easily this wouldn't be a problem.

the fake media is totally unfair to Bobby George.

Oh this is rich - I had missed this detail when I first read the article, but the former TownHall employee who is suing two protestors over hearing damage from them using a bullhorn (outside), is first cousins with owner Bobby George.  Way to keep it classy, team George!

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Two people who protested outside the well-known Ohio City restaurant TownHall last summer are now charged with felonious assault because an employee of the restaurant said she suffered hearing damage from their megaphones.

A grand jury indicted *** [redacted because this is a stupid case] *** on the second-degree felony charge that carries a maximum sentence of eight years in prison for their role in the July 12 protest. The two never actually set foot on TownHall property.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Sittoo’s Lebanese Grill recently opened its fourth location, taking over a spot in University Circle.

The new shop is located at 11365 Euclid Avenue, a space that was formerly occupied by Falafel Cafe. (Falafel Cafe moved its location in May 2020, to a smaller space located just a couple of blocks away at 11454 Uptown Avenue.)

Sittoo’s is owned by the same family that owns the popular Northeast Ohio Aladdin’s Eatery franchise.
