Ohio City is Just the Start of Choolaah's Ambitious Expansion Plans, Which Will Include Boardman and Westlake

Great news for this awesome fast-casual restaurant. The article does not say where specifically in Westlake or Boardman, but it does say the latter will open before the Ohio City one.

“Last year was a challenging one for all restaurants, Choolaah included. The pandemic delayed the Indian eatery’s planned expansion into Ohio City, which was originally slated for a 2020 opening. Now, not only is Ohio City back on track, but the Cleveland-based company also is revealing ambitious plans for growth.

“Choolaah launched its fast-casual Indian BBQ concept six years ago in Orange Village (27100 Chagrin Blvd., 216-350-3136). Since then, the company has gone on to open shops in Pittsburgh, King of Prussia, and Sterling, Virginia. Next up, says CEO Randhir Sethi, is to open multiple stores in the markets in which they already have a presence. “

That didn't take long.

I walked past the old Pour space yesterday and the new fixtures and furnishings were going in.
A little further down the street, it also looked like something was going on in the old Pizza Fire space. I hope that gets a new tenant soon, as it’s got to be 2+ years sat empty now.

Also some good news, Il Venetian will reopen in June

Sauce the City Cleveland food hall takes mentoring approach in former Ohio City Galley space [West 25th and Detroit]

What Searcy is promoting is an incubator-style approach with an initial quartet of businesses, similar to the genesis of Pittsburgh-based Galley Group’s former Ohio City Galley. That rotational restaurant space, at 1400 W. 25th St., closed at the tail end of February 2020, weeks before the stay-at-home pandemic orders took effect. Searcy was an original tenant in the concept and wound up staying the full three years.

This month, he opened Sauce the City Cleveland and is wearing multiple hats of chef, business owner and mentor. Searcy controls the restaurant side of the space; the bar side is available. Parking has been improved through a shared lot with tenants.

“We’ve been trying to build this place since Ohio City Galley closed,” Searcy said.

Urgh, @mjarboehas it right. I’m sighing heavily here too. Hands down the best restaurant in Cleveland. Good luck to the family in NE and I hope something good comes in to replace it.

FWIW, Black Pig is being replaced by a wedding boutique. Also, the building transferred hands for $925,000 a week ago.

Downtown restaurant and bar Filter aims to open in July

For the past year, local entrepreneur Kyler Smith has been working on a new concept in downtown Cleveland’s Warehouse District: Filter, a restaurant and bar, which takes over the former Take 5 Rhythm & Jazz space at 740 W. Superior Ave.

“It’s going to be pretty big for hospitality in Cleveland, Ohio,” Smith said in a phone interview with cleveland.com. “We’re getting that out-of-town, L.A., Miami type of vibe to the restaurant, is what people should expect.”

Good God--this guy sounds so full of himself. Who in Cleveland says "Cleveland OHIO"? He talks so condescendingly as if he's from some really really great city somewhere--I can't even think of an example city that would fit here.

Cocky’s Bagels to open second location in Flats East Bank

Cocky’s Bagels recently celebrated the second anniversary of its North Olmsted location and now will move forward with its second restaurant, set to open this August at Flats East Bank.

The new restaurant will be located at 1127 Old River Road, where a Rascal Flatts-themed restaurant was previously slated to open. (The Rascal Flatts spot fell through in early 2019.)

I was never a fan, as the service was usually dodgy and food meh, but sorry to see another downtown spot close.

What a garbage lawsuit:

City Barbeque chain sues locally owned Ohio City BBQ in Cleveland to force name change, take profits

https://www.cleveland.com/court-justice/2021/07/city-barbeque-chain-sues-locally-owned-ohio-city-bbq-in-cleveland-to-force-name-change-take-profits.html

Summary: generically named bbq restaurant chain sues a local restaurant with a somewhat similar sounding name that existed prior to the chain expanding into the local market for supposed trademark infringement.

Does include this FANTASTIC response to dumb legal threats [holding is mine]:

“Lawyers for City Barbeque began contacting Ohio City BBQ in 2017, trying to get its leaders to change its name, citing the future “inevitable confusion” of customers who will see Ohio City BBQ and think the popular chain in Columbus was opening its first Cleveland-area restaurant.

The outreach continued into February 2019, when the lawyers sent Ohio City BBQ co-owner Chris Abatsas a letter and a draft agreement in which Ohio City BBQ agreed to change its name, the lawsuit said.

A few days later, the lawyers received the agreement back in the mail. Someone ripped the pages in half and wrote on the back of a page in all capital letters, “stop f-----g sending me this s--t or I’ll sue for harassment,” the lawsuit said.”

I do like how the article points out that Ohio City BBQ has a much higher Yelp rating than the local City Barbeque locations.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

I think that the fact that "Ohio City" is a particular place will be salient to any defense they may have to mount in court.

City Barbecue's Yelp reviews are not good.  Sounds like the place is trying to make a little money by fleecing the locals, since they don't know how to run their own business.

This whole story hurts City Barbecue a lot more than the name similarity . I frequented City Barbecue in beachwood quite a bit, and I liked it.  By they seem like jerks and I won’t be buying bbq form them anymore

Agree Believeland.  I went to City in Beachwood semi regularly, but will now avoid them as I don't feel they deserve my business.

My brother, who lives in Upper Arlington, LOVES City Barbecue and gets it all the time. When I have it at his place it’s usually pretty good, so was excited to find out they are opening in Solon (where I live - we really don’t have many good eating options in this corner of the county). But I haven’t tried the local locations - sounds like the quality control in this area isn’t as good.

Former Buffalo chef is giving the restaurant biz another try — in Cleveland

Chef Kevin O’Connell Jr., who recently closed a restaurant near Buffalo, New York, because it lost an appeal for a liquor license, is giving the restaurant business another try — but this time he’s doing it in Cleveland.

According to a July 13 Facebook post, O’Connell’s newest venture is a sandwich and catering joint in downtown Cleveland.

Cleveland Sandwich Co. will bring “chef-inspired, local, artisan sandwiches, soups and salads” to the city’s Superior Building, offering breakfast and lunch service.

That photo in that article/post makes it look like the Vietnamese restaurant is gone and its space is up for lease. The Vietnamese restaurant is still open and the new sandwich place will use a different space. That signage seen in the photo makes it look like the Vietnamese place is gone.....must be bad for business.  It's a good restaurant!

Okay, some more nitpicking...from the article:

The new location in Cleveland offers high visibility: At 22 stories, the Superior Building is among the city’s tallest and stands at the intersection of Superior Avenue and East Ninth Street in the central business district.

Wikipedia lists the Superior building as the 30th tallest in Cleveland...

"among the city's tallest" yeah, that's just lazy journalism. But the "biz journals" is owned by Advance isn't it, which destroyed the Plain Dealer, and once very respected paper across the country? So I wouldn't take anything they say too seriously. I had only responded above to say that the Vietnamese restaurant is indeed open so they don't lose even more business (the pandemic) due to bad signage and bad journalism propagating that bad signage.

Generically, have people noticed that it's much harder to walk in and/or get a reservation at bars and restaurants lately? I remember pre-2020 just about any place you could walk in and get a table at any time. Lately you need reservations days in advance to get a table at all and sometimes a week in advance for popular times.

I wonder if it's people going out more (after not eating out a lot during 2020), more population growth, or something else driving the change.

More people going out, lack of staffing.

Reduced seating, reduced and/or eliminated waiting areas.

Lack of staffing I can see, but restaurants have been back to full capacity for a while now. In some cases, there is more seating because of the outdoor spaces that were added.

I'm really looking forward to the census results next week. I feel like population growth for the region is a legitimate possibility.

They might be just out of certain food items and drinks. Went to a place in Chicago recently out of chicken, Pizza dough and half of the beer taps were tapped out. They don't have the stock, and can't get it due to supply logistics. Probably uncertainty on even how much stock to order as well. Weekends of rain followed by beautiful unexpected weather...plus not enough staff.
