Double Nickel? ‘Restaurant’ may be a little too grand of a term for it. The food is decent enough (a kind of breakfast/ brunch/ southern mashup), but it’s not too much more than a high-end ($$$), lunchtime only, diner.

That place looks great. Menu is very expensive! Were they that expensive when they were in the Colonial Arcade? I remember it being much cheaper. Higher rent and inflation, I know, but its still pretty expensive. Was it worth it?

Yes, there’s a reason I’ve been a loyal customer for over 20 years 👍

Agreed. The food was excellent. Definitely quality over quantity at Sushi 86, but that's not to say the portions are tiny. Everything in general is more expensive these days. I will be going out of my way to go back there.

They still have the jala-b-thy roll on the menu? That was always my favorite when I went there regularly.

I know twitter embeds are a PITA but I don't feel like uploading taco bell photos to flickr lol some good responses in the RT's

I don’t have Twitter anymore, so can’t see the replies, but can imagine they’re good! I’ve never set foot in any Taco Bell in my life, so don’t know what they’re like in general, but that one seemed to always have some degree of s**t-show going on every time I walked by.

I always hoped to see some kind of retail establishment on the ground floor of May building.  Maybe it can happen now.

Paladar in Eton closed Monday and both Bombas in Rocky River and Fairlawn to also close Sunday, it didn’t take Eton long to fill the space as Agave and Rye will be opening up there.

Paladar closing and Agave taking the space had been in the works for months.

Walking out of the Guardians game tonight, I noticed, not for the first time recently, that re:bar is hopping and that new Parlay place next door in the old Panini’s spot, was closed yet again. I just looked online and sure enough, it’s closed down. That must be some kind of record. Only opened at the end of Feb and by my reckoning has probably been closed for at least a month already.

Parlay now appears to be open tonight 🤷‍♂️

Betts, but make sure you have a reservation.

Speaking of recommendations, can anyone recommend a place around Beachland Ballroom? Going there next Friday, so looking for a place to grab dinner beforehand. Nothing fancy--just decent food and not too expensive. Thanks!

Doinks Burgers or Citizen Pie

Betts is an excellent choice. Very chef driven. If you prefer simple, greasy spoon diner, I recommend Addy's. It's often busy, so give yourself some time to get your name in.

cockys is probably good. maybe punchbowl

My wife and I will be doing a "Tour de Greasy Spoon" of Cleveland each Saturday morning. The goal is to find great little diner/breakfast spots. We'd like to stay within 20 minutes of our house (OhIo City) - and I would love your input. Here's what we have so far (Nick's Diner and Big Egg have been excluded due to proximity to our house):

  1. Gus's Diner - Old Brooklyn
  2. Steve's - Old Brooklyn
  3. Dianna's Deli - Lakewood
  4. My Friend's - 117th
  5. Kristina's - West Blvd.
  6. Mike & Dee's - Downtown
  7. Addy's Diner - Downtown
  8. Gabe's - Old Brooklyn
  9. Steve's Doghouse - Old Brooklyn
  10. Daybreak - Brooklyn
  11. Canary's - Puritas
  12. Rubin's - West Park
  13. Dmitri's - West Park
  14. Diana's - Clark/Fulton

My wife's vote was the South Side Diner in Parma.

I have a tie between Steve's and Gus' in Old Brooklyn (both places now know my name, my daughter's name, and my order) lol

Agreed, Citizen Pie is good.....but good luck finding a place to sit.  It's also very different from the E. 4th version of same.  I met Kelly and her kids there and it turned out the Melvins were playing, we were lucky to snag one of the outside tables.   I had to explain to her who the Melvins were LOL.

I'm not sure if Cindy lets people bring outside food into the Beachland Tavern, probably not.

Doinks is IMO overrated.  The Boardwalk (little bar down Waterloo with a clone of the car Danny Green got blown up in out front) has much better burgers.   In fact the only ones in that area that beat them is Stevenson's in Euclid, and it's close.

Right around the corner. St. Anthony's!

Interesting that all the recently placed job ads on Indeed and elsewhere for the upcoming Heritage Steak & Whiskey at Eton (announced in April to open in June, still not open...) are from the Michael Symon Restaurants account - even though Symon indicated (including to this user, when asked) that this was a solo endeavor from his restaurant partner, Doug Petkovic.

So, it's either a misrepresentation - or Symon will have a new Cleveland restaurant open soon - his first fine dining venture to open since Lola closed - and immediately a draw.

I guess we will see.

For anyone in CLE (including me) who knows and loves the Portillo's fast food chain from Chicago - home of Italian Beefs and Chicago Dogs - Buried in an October  story about a potential housing & restaurant/commercial development south of Harvard Ave - across from Pinecrest in Orange Village - was this:

"...three restaurants have expressed interest: Outback Steakhouse, Carrabba’s Italian Grill and Portillo’s."

It was rumored they were looking in Ohio - and likely have other CLE-area locations on the map, too. These are powerhouse - and mighty tasty -  stand-alone units averaging $8MM/unit in yearly sales.

Another years-old (chain) restaurant closing... MItchell's Fish Market at Eton. No matter how you feel about chains, etc, this is getting crazy... especially in east side suburban locatons that have been strong in the past... (and rumors and observations make me believe that more high profile closings are coming...)

Anyone know if this level of recent restaurant closings happening in other cities or is it unique to our area? I mean Covid amplified issues for restaurants - but the level of closings is startling...  (and before it is stated as the reason, almost EVERY city has way too many restaurants - so THAT is not CLE-unique...)

I was never a big fan of Mitchells food but still probably had dinner there 6-7 times in my life, usually at the urging of others with whom I was out to dinner.  I remember for years and years it was impossible to get in, even on week nights.  However, the last time I was there (pre pandemic, maybe 4 years ago) it was barely half full on a Friday night.  I think after a while a restaurant, especially a chain, wears out its welcome as people gravitate to the new and different.  And I agree...way too many restaurants out there.

I used to go a lot - and things change - but this is run by Landry's - which is a restaurant powerhouse - and they know how to attract customers (though their McCormick & Scmick's died nearby, too...)  They even expanded their space maybe a dozen years ago... now over 8,000 square feet... huge by most restaurants' standards.

Too many restaurants? What does that even mean?

Luckily based on the closures article, most have new tenants lines up already.

Perhaps the poster is referring to the type of restaurant.  Seems like the younger folks prefer fast-casual eateries nowadays.

If you ever owned a restaurant you would know exactly what that means

Certainly, but as a non-restaurant owner I would be fine with one billion restaurants

Those restaurants aren't going to be able to afford to be very good in terms of food, quality of the food prep (in other words talented well paid cooks), service and ambiance if they are only 25% filled most night due to a finite number of people who do or can afford to eat out at those billion restaurants.

I definitely understand what you’re saying. I just think if you play out that thought experiment, “too many restaurants” would mean there are less good restaurants in Cleveland now than previously. I just don’t think that’s the case.

While we have a solid culinary scene, I still think we have a lot of space of more restaurants.

I never felt Landry treated Cleveland that well, or maybe it was the other way around, but their original attempt on Old River Rd. followed by Joe's Crab Shack died, as well as other Joe's like the one in Wickliffe.  Then there is the short lived McCormick and Schmick.  Morton's is still open downtown.

Having been in Jamaica this past summer, I have suddenly noticed a fair amount of Jamaican restaurants around.  Is this a recent development?

So do they have a replacement lined up for Michell’s already like they did for Paladar ?

I used to go there a lot too really loved the cod but yes, I do believe Covid hurt it, but it really went downhill after Alison Whalen left as general manager

I don't think Cleveland has too many restaurants by any means, but I do think there are specific markets or niches that are saturated. My main examples being fancy upscale restaurants downtown, and (as much as I love them) breweries.

Downtown has plenty of expensive restaurants, and I think everyone that goes in is probably going to drive another one out of business. But it's not like downtown has too many restaurants. It actually has a dearth of places like Gerracci's (good, cheap, open late). Cheaper (and even mid-level) dining options are lacking downtown, but fine dining is saturated.

And while I love breweries, we've seen a few relatively popular ones close recently, and I think that's just due to market saturation. For a new brewery to come in it basically needs to outcompete an older one.

I still can't figure out why Beachwood Place's restuarants keep folding. The last place North High always seemed empty when I came by, and it didn't help I was allergic to some of their beer, but Mccormick and Schmick's and Maggiano's always seemed to have good crowds.

so is mortons the only landry joint in the cle area now?

no chart house or dos caminos?

i have a landry card, but hardly use it.

its worth it though if you have business travel because you get back more than you paid upfront on your birthday, plus specials.

speaking of, i just remembered mccormick and schmick used to have the best happy hour food in midtown here in ny, too bad it crapped out here too. my sis in law worked at the original in seattle years ago.

blando corporate isn't always all bad lol.

Maggiano's in Beachwood had a large party-oriented space around 18K square feet - that was 2x their current 8K-9K model restaurant. Just too big. Unfortunately, it was one of only 2 Maggiano's (Sacramento lasted 1 yr, Beachwood 12...) that had closed at that point - though another large 17K sf location in Bellevue/Seattle closed this year...

McCormick & Schmick's has closed tons of restaurants, including 1 of 2 in Pittsburgh and the Columbus location, which is becoming another Landry's concept.

With that said, the lack of relative success of upscale chains is a concern in drawing these sorts of restaurants (including previously planned for Beachwood Place, Seasons 52) to Cleveland. Not important to all, but important to some.
