The owner of Toast also owned Pearl Street with Karen Small which also just had to close due to lease issues.  I have no inside info on this but I wonder if this closing is to open something bigger together. Just seems like a weird coincidence to me.

I hope so, but I do think Toast's business was struggling too.  I went there a few months ago on a Saturday evening and there were no other customers in the restaurant when I left around 7:00.

It was my wife's favorite - but I agree. We always brought our daughter there last summer when she was 4-8 months because there would be no one there to bother if she cried

I stopped going because there were always crying babies.

It's sad to see this restaurant close. But 10 years is a great run for restaurants these days. Let's hope that a new restaurateur can take over the building and bring a new concept to this site.

Phoenix in warehouse district is closing

There can only be one Phoenix on a Cleveland 9th street, it is decided.

^ Ate there the other night for the first time in a few years. It’s so, so good. I really should go more often.

Michael Symon's Mabel's BBQ at Eton - "temporarily closed" (as discussed above) since at least October/November - now has a "Mabel's BBQ has closed" sign on the door and "New Restaurant Announcement Coming Soon" stated below... though seemingly from the Eton development, not the Symon team.

Related: Symon's business partner, Doug Petkovic's, adjacent Heritage Steak - announced in 2021 and opened 4 months ago - is still without signage of any sort, temporary or permanent, on the building exterior (save for, maybe, a paper sign on door.) Really, really odd for any restaurant, let alone one with $80+ steaks, in planning for 2+ years - from an  experienced restaurateur.

In more Larchmere news, Barroco is moving back into the Hola Tacos space:

This Spring @holatacoscle in the Larchmere neighborhood will come to an end and will become Barroco once more! With this amazing comeback we are also thrilled to announce that we have been working since last year to convert the adjacent storefront into a beautiful new speakeasy bar that will be connected from within to Barroco! More details to come on the speakeasy’s opening date later in 2024

yes, that is quite strange. There is still no signage so they finally made it official about Mabel.   Nothing further on the former bravo out there??

New leasing map for Eton posted yesterday on Stark site. Still says "lease pending" for old Bravo space. Mabel's no longer showing.

Congrats to Cordelia Chef Vinnie - as of today a James Beard Award finalist - as well as to business partner Andrew and team. Great, great, great people - and the best restaurant in town - and in many towns around.

I've had dozens of great meals there in their 1.5ish years - I cant stay away - simply because they keep things new, fresh, and inventive on each version of the ever-changing menu.

Almost unbelievably, it's meeting the high bars set by the legendary Lola, formerly in this space, and the formerly adjacent Greenhouse Tavern.

I've got my res for this weekend!

Isn't he only closing the original one on Superior and still keeping Tower City or did I miss something?

Edit: Just saw the Instagram post. Closing for reasons out of their control.  This is a bummer.

All 3 adjacent, chatty tables to ours on E 4th's Cordelia on Saturday night were from out of town - Maine, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia.

All were in town for NCAA and 2 were staying for eclipse - and couldn't have raved more about Cordelia (which had one of top $ nights ever - and a first-ever sold out Sunday brunch, they said) - or Cleveland - from WSM to lakefront, and more

Big weekend for Cleveland.

Yikes. Very niche and cheesy. Not expecting this to last long. But those are just my opinions and I sincerely wish them all the luck, and kudos for being brave enough to try something different.

They have been very successful with their Haunted House Restaurant here. So maybe they can replicate that

I ~think they also run tail gate on Euclid ave. that place is always empty

Interesting idea.  I hope it works.

Just glad to see someone is still trying to help enervate the place.

Dummy me. Wrong adjective but doesn't enervate sound like it means energize lol.

El Carnicero will be closing after May 5.

Given the frequent ads on OpenTable with bonus points to dine at Haunted House - I'm not sure how it's going.

Still, I wish ASTRO well - though can't imagine they have actually licensed the use of all those character/brand trademarks - so hope that doesn't bite them.

Sad news. Am far more a Momocho fan, though - and can certainly say that Chef Eric has been on-site/visible nearly every one of my dozens of Momocho visits over the years. Hands on. Always good!

I would argue enervate was the correct word for this development

The Cleveland Heights Haunted House Restaurant is horrendous. Totally awful. I sent my food back and left, I can't remember the last time I did that. You couldn't pay me to eat there again. Based on reviews I've seen, my experience was unfortunately not that unique. Themed restaurants are fun, but I wish they'd focus more on how the food tastes and less on how many different colors of food dye they can squeeze in. Hopefully they aren't making the same mistake with their new restaurant.

Not to take away your experience but the place does seem fairly popular.

I live around there now, and I'd dispute that observation, but regardless. People are welcome to have their own opinion. For an objective measure, their rating on Google is 3.7 stars, which for a restaurant is pretty bad. It's 2.8 stars on Yelp, which is also bad. Objectively this restaurant has been poorly received.

Damn. That's a shame then. Fun concept and it seemed successful last year when I was there.

Tower City’s Astro lifts off tomorrow
By Ken Prendergast / April 22, 2024

Yes, a new restaurant at Tower City Center in Downtown Cleveland really is out of this world. And The Astro Restaurant is going to lift off at 11 a.m. tomorrow, one block from the neighboring RocketMortage offices. But since the restaurant will be open only for dinner, it may prove to be popular for people attending evening events at the RocketMortgage FieldHouse just down the street.
