The Astro Restaurant opens in former Hard Rock Cafe space in Cleveland's Tower City

The Astro Restaurant opened Tuesday in downtown Cleveland's Tower City Center in the location once occupied by Hard Rock Cafe.

Andre Scott, Jeremiah Burks, Christopher Thomas and Ryan Gullatt — the same restaurateurs who opened The Haunted House Restaurant in Cleveland Heights in 2021 — are managing the new space-themed restaurant in the Tower City location that had been vacant for eight years.

It took an invitation from Bedrock Cleveland, Dan Gilbert's Detroit-based development company, for the partners to consider the site at 230 W. Huron Road, according to the NEOtrans blog.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Hotel Cleveland, which has been under renovation, is finetuning menus for its new Maker and Mowrey restaurants. Located on Public Square, Hotel Cleveland was formerly known as the Cleveland Renaissance Hotel.

Maker is a casual, fine dining room in the main lobby, while Mowrey’s is an early breakfast place in the former Sans Souci restaurant space.

Batuqui, Cleveland
After nine years in their present home, Carla Batista and Gustavo Nogueira are relocating their beloved Brazilian restaurant. But they aren’t traveling far: the new eatery will be located 130 feet west in the former St. Paul’s Evangelical Church. The attractive Craftsman-style building on Larchmere was constructed in 1922 and features stained glass windows, soaring ceilings and rich wood accents.

Not too surprising but sad to report that Terrestrial Brewings equipment is listed for auction.

Just an FYI but a friend contacted Terrestrial to ask if they were closing. Their response was "No we're open seven days a week so come see us." There was no reference made to the auction of brewing equipment, which last I checked the leading bid was $240.00.

Making me hungry already (life’s too short for bad wings) but holy hell, was that article painful to read. Is the establishment called Old 86, Bar 86, or even Old 96?  Or maybe I need to try Bad 86?

I chatted with the owner (I think) the other day when I was walking by. It sounds like it's gonna be NY style pizza by the slice and desserts, not sure what kind.

He'd been living in the neighborhood and noted the lack of late night food options when people are coming out of the bars, so is hoping to fill that gap.

Can't wait!

The lost art of profreading.

(Hell even spell check hated that one).

FYI AJ Rocco's is open

Food was way overpriced for the quality, portions, service and atmosphere. Marble Room is pricey too, but the food, service and atmosphere are top-notch. But this should be posted in the Cleveland restaurants thread.

Jade Steak & Sushi closes in Cleveland

I am so tired of so many of these sort of places opening in Cleveland... I wish we had more WELL RUN concepts with strong management and staff. The location deserves better.

I feel like half of these "concept" restaurant owners go in planning to close the business within 2-3 years to open another concept in the same place.

They're all very current trend places trying to make a quick buck off of the hype of being a new restaurant doing something people want, with higher prices than their competitors.  Then when that quickly wears off they just move to the next new concept.  I would bet that by the end of 2025, the same thing happens to places like Jaja, Bright Side, Filter, and whatever moves into the old Greenhouse Tavern location next.

That way, they're always the brand new trendy restaurant all of the Cleveland influencers are telling people they "HAVE to check out"

Brightside actually has good food and great service. Price points are good too. The others, I can’t say the same about.

Ya it was probably wrong of me to call out any specific places.  I was just thinking of a few of the new trendy/plant filled/concept places that have opened recently.

Brightside followed Bar Cento/Bier Market, a concept which had been there for 15+ years.

Same owners. Just trying something new.

And I know both were considered trendy in 2005.

I can see Brightside making a 15+ year run as well.

Word on the street is that Scorpacciata Pasta and Pizza Co will be opening its brick and mortar location on Larchmere Blvd. in the next few weeks, just in time for Larchmere PorchFest on 6/29!

I'll stick up for Jaja because their food, atmosphere and service are all top notch. They had a consistency problem in the beginning but that seems to have been ironed out. Evidenced by it being difficult to get a reservation at a decent time a few weeks out. I think it will be around for a long time.

Melt sued for $2.3M in unpaid rent, other costs

https://fox8.com/news/melt-sued-for-2-3m-in-unpaid-rent-other-costs/

Landlords are coming after Melt Bar & Grilled for more than $2.3 million in unpaid rent and other costs for missed utility payments, bounced checks and more at four of its locations, three of which have closed in the past two years.

=======================================

It would not surprise me if the Akron (Montrose) location follows suit (no pun intended) this year.  I took the kids there once about a month ago and my wife took them there last week.  I was there with them on a Monday, so not the busiest day of the week, but it was still what I think was quiet even for a Monday.  And my wife was there with them on a weekend, when you'd think business would be better, and she said it was still not exactly busy, and the food quality has not at all kept pace with price increases.  Entrees with even one side dish upgrade now easily top $20.  Even the kids, who love to go out to eat just because it's still a more novel experience for them, weren't exactly impressed.  My wife's trip there may well have been the family's last.

We're cooking more and more at home, even though it's hard to carve out time.  Our fallback option has increasingly become prepared food from full-service grocery stores (Acme and Mustard Seed mostly).  Even that can easily run $60 for a meal for five now, but sit-down restaurants are hitting closer to $80-$100.

They also tried to grow too much too fast I think.  They got away from their core market and weren't able to keep a handle on QC.  Also, it made them less unique.  I used to go quite a bit, but haven't been since they closed the Cleveland Heights location.
