Jazz returns to Nighttown space with Edwins, while original bookers head to Ohio City

TL;DR

  • “We have plans to have live jazz throughout the month, along with a monthly marquee headliner,” Chrostowski told Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer in a recent interview.
  • Local talent has been and will remain the “major component” to this new weekend schedule of events.

  • Across town at Market Garden Brewery in the Ohio City neighborhood, Wadsworth and JWP are also bringing in A-list talent – the kind that they would have normally landed at Nighttown.

  • “That’s just not what we are about and we had established a much different tradition. There’s no ill will and I’m glad to see the Nighttown space alive again – I live right nearby – and we are always glad to see more musicians working. The more the better,” he added. “But the truth is, we were just moving in different directions.”

I'm glad dante continues to open places. I've lost count how many places he has now all told, 6 or 7? he's a really decent human from my interactions with him, wish him the best and continued success. the original is the only remaining "fine" dining in Tremont now right?

I like his food. I don't know anything about him personally.

The Akron location closed at the end of the year. I am told he was not active in that location.

Didn’t they already shed over half their locations during Covid? Seems like they’ve never been able to bounce back, for whatever reason.

The industry has not bounced back from the virus era.

A shakeout was already in the works, but the restrictions put it on steroids.

They are right by Two Friends, which I have been meaning to try eventually.   Since they are on Uber Eats and I think (hope) I figured out where to park, why not both?

YUM!   So good.  I got the Philly steak and the buffalo chicken.  They aren't really traditional egg rolls, more like a pierogi or empanada with an egg roll casing.

They are in the LaSalle building so you can park in that lot.

Two Friends was good, I'm a beer snob so I'll reserve judgement until I have tried more of their product.  Place is a little bright for my tastes, but you'll have that LOL.   Not every bar can look like an old speakeasy.

Tons of great sandwich places in Ohio City / Gordon Square, but many close before my normal dinner time, or on Sundays when I dont feel like cooking. This one said they plan to be open 7 days a week, for lunch and dinner. Looking forward to it!

Xinji noodle bar is closing down.

We never made it out there after moving here last fall, and now I feel bad about it. I heard they were really good. Their ramen broth always sounded a little more unique and interesting compared to some of the other places in Asia Town that do more traditional ones.

Been a bad week for cool spots - Old Brooklyn Cheese also announced they're closing their storefront and shifting to focus on their mustard business. Glad they found a niche, but still bummed!

Layne's Chicken Fingers to open first Ohio store amid rapid growth

Layne's Chicken Fingers plans to open its first Ohio restaurant in Parma on Monday as part of an ambitious national expansion.

The Frisco, Texas-based company opened nine restaurants and signed two franchise agreements for 10 restaurants in the first quarter alone, according to a statement.

Layne's wants to have 45 restaurants by the end of the year, including the restaurant at 1350 W. Pleasant Valley Road in Parma, which is set to open on April 14.

When Green Rooster switched from their [rotisserie] chicken I had a bad feeling about their future.  Big step down from the roasted chicken to the canned/bagged substitute.

Agave Social restaurant to open in Flats
By Ken Prendergast / April 17, 2025

It didn’t take long to land a new tenant for a highly visible restaurant location at Cleveland’s Flats East Bank. Just four months after Beerhead Bar and Eatery closed at 1156 W. 11th St., noted local restaurateurs Alex and Arturo Mendez Martinez have executed a lease for the ground-floor space at the corner of West 11th and Main Avenue.

That's got to be the most cringey restaurant name fad going.  I almost automatically avoid a place with 'social' in the name.  I'll be glad when it dies out.

It must have been mentioned in the Ohio City thread (i saw it somewhere), but Soho is taking over the Xinji spot.

You beat me to it. I was also going to comment on the “social” in the name which is something I mentioned in this thread about six months ago. Please, restaurant owners, if you’re listening, stop using this word!

I'll be honest... I'm shocked they're still open.

Hope they pick up more significant traction, because I really like their food.

Same. We've been there a few times and liked it well enough. It's a fun vibe there.

The Brew Pub lighting at the bar area had been pretty awful. It made everyone in there look 10 years older lol. An historic and warm space like that needs much more intimate lighting. I hope they don't mess with the cellar bar too much.

I'm not surprised La Playa is still open - we were there last weekend with a large group, and the place was packed. They do really well during the summer, both on weekdays and weekends.

Most business owners along Detroit Ave (just look at Ninja City’s recent revamp) recognize that the neighborhood’s best days are still ahead. With over 1,000 new housing units being added, retailers know things are about to get MUCH busier in the near future.

Toastique to open first Ohio location in Orange Village this summer

Toastique, a gourmet toast, juice and coffee bar born in Washington, D.C., is preparing to make its Cleveland-area debut this summer.

The café at 200 Park Ave., Unit 140, in Orange Village's Pinecrest district is expected to serve the brand's signature lineup of toasts, smoothie bowls, cold-pressed juices and espresso drinks, according to a statement that did not specify the restaurant's opening date.

The 1,500-square-foot café plans to offer seating for 30 people indoors with additional seating outdoors and to serve dishes such as tomato burrata toast, a dragonberry bowl and collagen-infused espresso drinks.
