in the old nearly new shop space?  i noticed that was all torn up yesterday.

  I think it is next to that (or 2 down?) on the corner. I was sad to see the nearly new shop closed though. cedar lee appears to be boom or bust for businesses stone oven was hopping. I was sorriest to see natures bin go though (a couple years ago)

They're moving into the space at the southwestern corner of Kensington & Lee.  Greve's florist used to be on the corner - they're definitely taking that space and I think they'll also be occupying the space just south of that, that used to be the Nearly New Shop.  You're right about Stone Oven - they seem to be doing very well in their new location as does Phoenix Coffee (which beat out the Starbucks that usedup the street).  Do hope something goes in where the Pub on Lee was, though...

 

Cedar Lee seems to be about average in terms of turnover in Cle Hts - more than Cedar/Fairmount, less than Coventry at least over the last few years.  Streetscape there has improved in recent years w/new businesses moving in and improving their facades and old businesses just deciding to do it (including some unlikely candidates like the HVAC people, the dry cleaner and the vacuum store). 

Mint Cafe on Coventry is also out of this world.

Another nod for the best curry I have ever had.  Yes, it is on Coventry in Cleveland Heights about a block south of Mayfield.

anatolia has some of the tastiest food in cleveland, esp the yogart dishes. i never cared for the cramped digs so hopefully the new place will have  a little more elbow room.

p.s the best hummus is at Cedarland at the Clinic. try it

Update: drove by tonight and they've actually begun working - demoed out some of the windows and framed out a new overhang.  The renderings on www.anatoliacafe.com look great, but then again the renderings always look great...

I agree, Anatolia has the best hummous in town (I've tried cederland as well).

 

However, also tasty for you W and SW siders is Maha's Falafil [sic], which I tried for the first time the other night.  Their food is VERY good.  The Strongsville location is strictly take-out.  haven't visited their w.25th location yet.

humph. I respectfully disagree. I think for Hummus it is: #1cedarland, #2 anatolia, #3 Nates. We should have a blind taste test and nip it in bud. Anyway, Maha's Falafil (yes we are sic'ing,probably X2) is the best falafil. Their stand is in the back of the WS market. It really is the best....but here we go again with a "best of "argument.

The owner of Budapest Blonde, a European-style martini and wine bar in Independence, bought the closed Halite restaurant in Ohio City from partners Jack Anfang and Ricardo Sandoval, who also own Fat Cats in Tremont and other popular destinations.

 

She's turning the space into Budapest Blue, an after-work night spot designed in seven shades of blue, with domestic and imported beers, martinis and wine to wash down traditional bar fare.

 

This sounds very cool, although if I were a business owner trying to sell food, I would never choose blue for the interior of my restaurant.  The color blue has been proven to decrease your appetite.  That's why most restaurants decorate in warm tones, which actually stimulate the appetite, and you tend to order more.  That being said, I might go there knowing I'd be less likely to overindulge. :)

Good news!  Was in La Gelateria in Cedar-Fairmount yesterday (if you've never been, go - their Gelato is as good as any we had in Italy) and they said that by some time in November they'll have some new wood-burning ovens installed to sell thin crust pizza!  I can feel the pounds adding on already...

I used to love Beardens until they renovated the interior. The burgers are still great, but the interior now looks like an IHOP, circa 1988.

you have or had one. i dk what its called now, but we went to the russia house on mayfield around christmas a while ago and it was a hoot. they had lots of vodka, including house-made flavored vodkas, entertainment ie., some guy singing madonna songs in russian, dancing and karaoke. unbelieveable! (and i have been to the big russian showplaces in brighton beach brooklyn).  i know it changed names afterward, but i dk if its open any more.

it think that is what they call my kitchen. kidding of course. And while it doesn't taste like tofu, I agree the variance in taste is not as great as say tequila, whiskey, etc.

PJ McIntyre's Irish Pub: Patrick Campbell and Tom Leneghan have converted an old appliance store in Kamm's Corners into an authentic Irish watering hole. Campbell and company have imported a stockpile of stately furnishings from the Emerald Isle. The roomy space boasts a stacked-stone fireplace, wood paneling and a horseshoe-shape walnut bar. PJ's serves a large selection of draft beers and a menu of traditional Irish (and American) pub fare, including bangers and mash, Guinness stew, and fish and chips. 17119 Lorain Ave., 216.941.9311. Reddstone: Owner Josh Kabat, a Lola alum, has turned the original Snicker's Tavern into Reddstone, "an upscale rock 'n' roll bar with food." Although Snickers enjoyed the use of a second-floor dining room, Reddstone will confine its activity to the barroom, which features new booths and banquettes, and a large patio. "I want this place to be loud, crowded and high-energy," Kabat says. Budapest Blue: Ilona Simon, the Budapest blonde behind Budapest Blonde, has transformed the former Halite spot in Ohio City into Budapest Blue, a lounge. Painted seven shades of blue, the bar will feature beer, wine, cocktails and martinis. Unlike the

GLOBAL TASTES

Sasa: Scott Kim is closing his 7-year-old Japanese restaurant, Matsu, to open Sasa at Shaker Square. The space, formerly Sushi on the Square, has been gutted and transformed into a "comfortable, modern room with wood, fabric and plum-colored walls," Kim says. Unlike the very traditional Matsu, Sasa will venture into Thai and Korean flavors on the broad "tapas-style" menu. Pacific East of Eton: Acclaimed sushi chef and owner of Pacific East on Coventry, Freeman Ngo, says that his younger brother will be the one cutting the fish at this new outpost. "I am more traditional; he is more creative," Ngo explains. Diners can expect more fanciful rolls, tempura, teriyaki and noodles at this smaller version of the original. Peppermint Thai Cuisine: Fans of Coventry's Mint Café have a reason to cheer: Owner Matt Kanegkasikorn is preparing to open an East Side offspring. Located in Landerwood Plaza, in Pepper Pike, Peppermint (get it?) will serve an almost identical menu in a larger, more modern 90-seat setting. Anatolia Café: Construction has begun on the new Anatolia Café, a sprawling 5,000-square-foot remake of the soon-to-be-shuttered original at Cedar Center. Owner Yashar Yildirim says that the generously sized Turkish restaurant will seat close to 300 in the dining room, at the bar, on the patio and in private rooms. 2270 Lee Rd. Late Fall.

 

FAMILIAR NAMES

Dante: After a brief closure to facilitate last-minute renovations, Dante, formerly Lockkeepers, officially opens this week. Dante Boccuzzi, a Cleveland native who was most recently top toque at Manhattan's Aureole, officially took over ops at this Valley View showstopper in March. Dante will feature an entirely novel menu, loaded with intensely flavored, picture-perfect dishes. 8001 Rockside Rd., 216.524.9404. September 29.

 

La Strada: World Café owner Terry Tarantino hopes to salvage the original '40s-era terrazzo floors at La Strada, his Mediterranean restaurant on E. Fourth St. Tarantino, who also operates Little Italy's La Dolce Vita, says diners can expect the bold flavors of Greece, Morocco, Turkey, Spain and Italy to be represented on the menu. "We'll bring over some things we do very well at Dolce Vita," the owner said, "but this will not be Downtown La Dolce." Diners can expect shish kebobs, couscous, tagines and risottos. E. Felice's Urban Eatery: Over on Larchmere, Sandoval is teaming up with Margaret Mueller to launch Felice's, "a neighborhood restaurant with a little bit of everything on the menu," says Sandoval. Harvey's Ribs: This venerable rib joint has had more lives than an alley cat, but Sammy Kay, a previous owner, is resurrecting it once again. Kay says that he owns the rights to all the original recipes - the slaw, the sauces, the ribs - and promises everything "will be done exactly the way they always were done." Lobster Trap: This casual fish house moved across the street to impressive new digs. A former gentleman's club was reworked into an upscale nautical-chic space with room for 350 seats. Marmalade: Slated to open at La Place Fashion Centre, in the spot formerly occupied by American Café, Marmalade will feature "casual, contemporary American cuisine," according to owner Andy Zelenkofske. There's a number of Russian-owned places in Mayfield Heights and even in Chesterland on Mayfield Road. Some have American-sounding names, so you can't always tell until you look at the menu or overhear the clientele.

 

A bit of an off-subject story: I was at a bar on Mayfield near Lander in 2001 because I'd heard they had great food and because a cop friend of mine over there said the owner was a Russian gangster. I was into researching and writing about gangsters and mobsters back then. I started chatting with a regular there because he was talking to a young guy behind the bar about paying back some debts (!). Later, the regular whispered to me that the guy he was talking to was the owner's son who ran the bar and said in even quieter voice that owner was in the mob. Also, there was a room in the basement and a big guy standing at the top of the stairs letting some people down there. Wonder how many C-notes I would have had to flash in front of his face to get admitted??

while i am very glad to hear this i have to say the guy may be asking for troubles. i know the owner of the blind tiger craft beer bar in nyc and he is a fan of british craft beers as well and he has stopped serving them for the most part because the kegs dont travel well and spoil easily crossig the pond. he was losing as many as he served so he has about given up (i am talking about local craft casks, not the big british national brewery products). good luck to him tho i hope he finds a way.

I love it! It's almost impossible to escape TV in Cleveland bars. This will be such a relief.

dropped in on Reddstone last night for a couple beers with an out-of-town friend who'd asked for a bike tour of the neighborhood.  I obliged, of course! 

 

Battery Park is looking better by the week and the bar was busy.  The indoor space is quite small, but I liked the dark decor and the layout.  The menu was temporary and the taps weren't open yet, but they are on pace for the big  "official" opening in October.  The patio was the best part to me.  Very cozy and beautiful on this particular night.  You could see the new homes over the top of the fence.

 

The only issue I had with the place was that they made claims to open a bar with a great rock n' roll juke box or music selection or whatever it was (or at least that's how I remembered it) and the first song I heard upon sitting down was Cher's big hit from 1999.  Not sure how that fits in.  Otherwise, good times and I look forward to heading back often!

Sounds like a great addition to the neighborhood.  Any reason why they fence in the patio with such a tall fence [from your email I'm inferring it's tallish]?  I think it's kind of cool to see good outdoor bar activity from the street, but maybe there are good reasons to obscure it.

I think they just kept the fence that was already there.  I would imagine it was there to preserve calm inside when there were unsavory uses outside.  Now, it may be useful to appease neighbors who don't want rowdy drinkers spilling out onto the street.  I would imagine it could be reduced in size, but it does create a nice feel for those inside.  On the other hand, it would be nice for the neighborhood (at times) to be able to see that activity.

I had my favorite, a medium Red-Eye (2nd one today!) and a tuna panini.  The coffee was very good, the sandwich was tastey, but the interior was a bit too sterile. Nonetheless,  it looks like I can start patronizing a new cafe now!  Cork and Beans isn't bad, Starbucks is Starbucks, and Vinea hasn't gotten it together since they opened a few years ago--as far as the cafe portion is concerned.  I'm looking forward to trying out more of Moko!

I also just wanted to mention a good special Waterstreet Grill has on Tues nights: buy one get one free entrees (I think they would do it with other food items as well). They have 1/2 price apps every happy hour, and $1 off cocktails . Anyway the service at the bar was very pleasant (nothing worse that an D-B bartender)and the food while not my usual preference was good as well (and a great deal) they did say you should mention the special on ordering as it is semi word of mouth. I would not concider this destination dining, but if you are in the area it is nice of you just want to grab a simple bite to eat.

Holy Chicken indeed!  I ate their wings, at full price, last sat nite.  growing up as cleveland carnivores, we've all the requisite resume to be wing connoisseurs.  have you honed your skills lately?

i did and found the wings to hit all the high notes; hot, crispy outside, juicy inside, right-sized, saucy and the hot had a great depth of flavor. though like a trip to the spa, i like to sweat when i eat wings, though i'm sure the kitchen can accommodate my masochistic desires if prompted.

 

also, the outside patio is a beaut, as it was in the Snicker's days.  my only recommendation, which i've given to the owners, is to add a miniature golf hole or two to the patio.  the panoply of features, including mature trees, water features, and elevation changes is calling out to be danced upon by those skilled with putter and ball. 

 

as for the music, i didn't hear any cher, but imo, it could use a bit less emo and bit more old school punk.

 

 

btw, i'm a proud omnivore now and so am nearly as excited by the prospect of $1 vegan tacos!

Have Snickers and Cheddars merged and become simply Cheddars?  I drove by there tonight and noticed Cheddars seemed closed and the sign said to enter next door.  The Snickers portion now has signs in the window reading "Cheddars".  :?

I either read on UrbanOhio, or someone told me, that they were facing some legal questions regarding the name (I don't know if that means the candy bar was laying the smackdown on the term Snickers). I ate at Cheddars about two weeks ago, and at that time, it looked as though they were keeping both open but under the common name Cheddars.

I have an easy solution, change the name to "snicker's" make it possesive.

I swear I saw in one of the store fronts on Detroit near the Chipotle in Lakewood that said something about a cereal restaurant. There's something like that in Chicago, I saw on TV. Could we be getting a cereal dinner, too, or am I crazy, :)

I wonder if you're talking about cereality.  I don't think they have a store in Chicago.  We did something at the launch of their first store in Philly.

 

They usually have locations near colleges/universities.  We did a a marketing program with them, its a cool idea.  Very young.

You may soon hear the snap, crackle and pop of a cereal buffet in Lakewood. Jeff Coyle and his partners in Cereal Central opened a cereal restaurant near the Ohio State University campus in Columbus last year with ambitious plans for about 100 nationally within five years. But the ride's been a tad bumpy. First, they had to change the name from Cerealitious when the concept's originator, Cereality Bar & Cafe, threatened to sue. Next, expansion has been slower than expected. But a second location may finally open at a spot near Detroit Avenue and Warren Road, hopefully in September. If it does, expect a novelty offering about 40 cereals with 35 toppings, oatmeals, smoothies and frozen bananas. Unlike the Columbus spot, this one will be mainly takeout. Coyle said he's teaming with Smoothie Creations of Parma for the Lakewood venture.
