February 27, 200817 yr If it was just stopping in for some dessert fondue (aka a gal's night out or something), it's alright. But doing the whole three courses for dinner? You end up REEKING of cooking oil :-( Welcome to the forum, btw. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
February 27, 200817 yr Hmm, looks like the spread of Vietnamese food continues (a good thing); from today's Restaurant Row: Sorry to hear that Que Tal, the Mexican-inspired landmark on Coventry Road, closes today. According to Myra Orenstein of Cleveland Independents, a Vietnamese restaurant will replace Que Tal. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/plaindealer/restaurantrow/index.ssf?/base/entertainment-0/1204018344153120.xml&coll=2&thispage=2
February 27, 200817 yr Maybe a landmark in the sense that it obstinately refused to close despite being empty every time I passed it by? I just commented the other day to a friend it baffled me how they were still open after all these years.
February 27, 200817 yr I actually liked their food...couldn't understand how people could like Chipotle's tasteless crap better than Que Tal. Maybe it's just a requirement to like Que Tal if you went to CWRU, though.
February 27, 200817 yr Don't know if anyone noticed. Pub on Lee Closed. However, it was bought by an irish bar up the street and a new partner, will reopen soon.
February 27, 200817 yr Don't know if anyone noticed. Pub on Lee Closed. However, it was bought by an irish bar up the street and a new partner, will reopen soon. Was it bought by Deklan (sp?) from Parnell's? Is he going to operate both places?

Was it bought by Deklan (sp?) from Parnell's? Is he going to operate both places? Yes, its going to be more food and pub themed than Parnell's. Both places will remain. (I also hear he kept the old Pub on Lee staff)

(I also hear he kept the old Pub on Lee staff) That would surprise me if he kept the staff. The place has been closed for at least 6 months, maybe even more like a year. I imagine most of these people got jobs elsewhere. In my opinion, part of the reason they closed was due to slow business and I attribute that to the staff they had in there just before they closed. I was in there a few times and in my opinion, the quality of food went downhill. No offense to anyone who was cooking at the time.
February 27, 200817 yr In other Lee Road restaurant news, Ariyoshi has opened in the old Arabcia. I went and they had good sushi. Anatolia Cafe (moving from Cedar Center) is now hiring. Also, the old Starbucks will now be Aoeshi. A friend of mine got the scoop on this place.... http://pasttheline.blogspot.com/2008/02/aoeshi.html

February 27, 200817 yr OMG I love Anatolia. It's one of my fave. restaurants in Cleveland. have they finally closed the old space in anticipation of the move? When will the new location open?

Also, the old Starbucks will now be Aoeshi. A friend of mine got the scoop on this place.... http://pasttheline.blogspot.com/2008/02/aoeshi.html Interesting mix of offerings at Aoeshi: "sushi, panini bread, and wraps" (per http://pasttheline.blogspot.com/2008/02/aoeshi.html). By the way, speaking of Japanese-inspired lunch food, has anyone tried Flying Crane or whatever it's called on Larchmere?
February 27, 200817 yr Anatolia Cafe has some of the most delicious food in town. I have only met one other person as neutral as MTS. The yogurt dishes are amazing. And yes Mayday the hummus is probably the best in Cleve (tough call though with Nate's and Cedarland)
February 27, 200817 yr For those too lazy to visit the website: ANATOLIA CAFE IS CLOSED NOW. WE WILL BE OPEN ON NEW LOCATION MARCH 1ST 2008. NEW LOCATION; 2270 LEE RD CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH 44118 (216) 321 4400 [sic on the all caps] I think Lee Rd. now has one of the better assortments of food establishments in a concentrated area in the Cleveland area. And any area that keeps a Phoenix Coffee and pushes out a Starbucks and Arabica is doing right by me. :) Anyways, looking forward to Anatolia opening up A LOT.
February 27, 200817 yr I'm going to miss Que Tal?. It was my favorite burrito joint in town. Anyone else who misses it should check out the build your own burrito joint on East 185th, just north of the highway. It was opened by someone who used to be affiliated with Que Tal? and has a somewhat similar menu and ingredients. I don't remember the name offhand, though.
February 27, 200817 yr ^Chili Peppers EDIT: Never tried it, but have heard a few people rave about it.
February 27, 200817 yr I LOVE it that Phoenix has withstood the onslaught of Starbucks on Lee Road. There was an article a few weeks ago in the NYT about just this occurrence, apparently it's happing all over the country and is compounding the problems Starbucks has been having financially. Check it out, the local coffee shop they featured sounds pretty awesome too: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/30/business/30sbux.html?scp=1&sq=starbucks+kansas+city&st=nyt

Or for the cost of a drive to "exotic" Parma Heights in Cuyahoga County, you can eat a Filipino buffet on a Saturday afternoon and shout "Mabuhay!" (the Filipino equivalent of "Aloha"). March 4, 200817 yr Guess this should go here since it mentions the East Ninth Phoenix should be opening the first week in May -- Link to Crain's blog entry Phoenix rises to the occasion Blog entry: March 04, 2008, 2:26 pm | Author: JOHN BOOTH Phoenix Coffee isn’t big on advertising, but look for an interesting print ad in this week’s Cleveland Free Times (and, if you happen to be in Seattle, in The Stranger). It’s a short “thank you” note to Starbucks relating to the java giant’s brief-but-hyped shutdown a week ago. You can view a PDF version of the Phoenix ad here, via Phoenix CEO Sarah Wilson-Jones’ Superbarista blog. A Phoenix fan built the ad for fun. “I read it, and I thought, ‘It’s freaking brilliant, and we’re going to run it,’” Ms. Wilson-Jones said. But it was her husband, Phoenix founder Carl Jones, who “was really emphatic about running it in Seattle.” Oh, and that East Ninth Street Phoenix that’s been in the works for the past year or so? Look for it to open during the first week of May. Here a link to the ad itself
March 4, 200817 yr awesome news about nipa hut and kainan. yeah the clev has a good sized filipino population for sure. my father used to work with the former president of the philipine's daughter! i remember she said every time she went back for a visit they would roll a red carpet out at the plane. filipino chow is quite a unique mix, if you poke around enough there are items everyone will find delicious. some staples are pansik, meat skewers, kare-kare if they have it and for dessert halo-halo. here in ny, along with a strip of restaurants in queens, there is a steam kind of place in the east village i got to sometimes called elvie's. i hope someone goes and reports back -- you can check out some menus here for ordering inspiration: http://menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp?areaid=0&restaurantid=5462&neighborhoodid=0&cuisineid=82&home=Y http://menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp?areaid=0&restaurantid=43446&neighborhoodid=0&cuisineid=82&home=Y

Sounded like the lease was up and the landlord wanted more rent than the restauranteur was willing to pay... Too bad - they had the best burger on Lee.
March 6, 200817 yr I just went to Lovellee's Pizzeria and Chiller on Denison/Fulton (Brooklyn Centre) last night. I recall reading about this place on tremonter.com and a short note in the Old Brooklyn News a few months ago. The location is odd, but the owners did a remarkable job with the inside. The pizza was INCREDIBLE! I'm a big fan of Dina's on Memphis in the O.B., but this place in Brooklyn Centre will have me coming back. Entering the place, I was pleasantly shocked how bright and inviting it was. Everything from the tables, to the dishes, to the food sets this place aside from. Not a great website, but it gives the times of operation. www.lovelleespizzeria.com

March 6, 200817 yr As a big supporter of One Walnut, this pissed me off. (Melissa) Cole, while grateful for the support One Walnut has received, seems eager for a change. "You know, downtown can be a bit of a downer," she allows. "Detroit Shoreway is a neighborhood people can look to in the future. We want to feel connected to a community." Again...marketing people.
March 7, 200817 yr After a million-dollar renovation, the landmark Brothers Lounge will reopen March 14 in Cleveland by Joe Crea/Food and Restaurants Editor Friday March 07, 2008, 10:07 AM Peggy Turbett/The Plain DealerThe neon sign of Brothers Lounge glows bright on Detroit Avenue near W. 116th St. What was once a music lovers' landmark had become a dump. The Brothers Lounge had hosted some of America's greats. Buddy Guy and B.B. King performed there. Robert Lockwood Jr. graced its stage. So did Bonnie Raitt. By 2002, the 90-plus-year-old building at 11609 Detroit Ave. was decaying. A year later, it went up for sheriff's auction. It changed hands, but lay fallow -- like so many properties in Cleveland's handsome but scarred neighborhoods. More at http://www.cleveland.com/goingout/index.ssf/2008/03/brothers_lounge.html
March 8, 200817 yr Damn PD beat Sun to it. We'll have an article and photos this Thursday. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
March 14, 200817 yr From the "Bites" column in the Free Times, "Vinea Wine Bar" on Huron just closed. This was one of the only (maybe the only?) place actually facing Star Plaza, no? Why aren't there more places with outdoor seating facing Star Plaza?
March 14, 200817 yr I don't think that it faced Star Plaza. I'd say that it was just off of Star Plaza. I think that it closed a few months ago. Maybe January or December.
March 14, 200817 yr Bar Cento's food affordable, affable and imaginative by Beth Segal / Special to The Plain Dealer Friday March 14, 2008, 1:54 PM Peggy Turbett / The Plain DealerBar Cento's pommes frites are tossed with rosemary and garlic and served with three different hits of Belgian mayonnaise. Have you been to Bar Cento? Email us your review of the food, service and atmosphere. Please include your full name and the town you live in. We'll publish a sampling on Cleveland.com and in The Plain Dealer. The siren song of Bar Cento rolls out onto West 25th Street, luring in the curious, the cognoscenti and the neighborhood guys just looking for a beer and some fries. Well, in this case the fries are billed as pommes frites ($6 small, $9 large), tossed with fragrant rosemary, scattered with pungent cloves of garlic and served with three different hits of decadent Belgian mayonnaise. March 18, 200817 yr Quaker Steak & Lube to rename "Suicide" sauce Posted by Harlan Spector March 17, 2008 20:45PM Categories: Top Story Quaker Steak & Lube, a motor-sports-themed restaurant chain, has agreed to rename its super-hot "Suicide" sauce after complaints that the name was insensitive to those who have been touched by suicide. March 18, 200817 yr I'm offended by "supercharged" because my father was run over by a supercharged '68 dodge dart

April 11, 200817 yr They've started work on the Lakewood Dewey's Pizza, on Detroit by the West End Tavern. They've got a plywood front thing going on. I can't wait for this to open.
April 11, 200817 yr I'm so glad that Market Cafe and Phoenix have opened on E. 9th! For such a main street, it definetly was lacking storefronts that engaged pedestrians! Hopefully there will be more to come-like the empty building across from the Cathedral!
April 14, 200817 yr ewww Dewey's pizza....I've had bad pizza and really bad pizza- Dewey's falls somewhere in between.
April 14, 200817 yr Really? I've only eaten there a couple of times, but I thought it was pretty good. I guess I am more happy about a family friendly place with a good draft list that is right down the street from me.
April 14, 200817 yr ^ sounds like the Buckeye Beer Engine is close to you...now there's a good draft list, plus it appears to be family friendly.
April 14, 200817 yr ^ sounds like the Buckeye Beer Engine is close to you...now there's a good draft list, plus it appears to be family friendly. The Dewey's in Cincy I've had great experiences at. At the Lee Road one I've had a few hits and misses. Mostly on the service side, never on the food side. But that's just me, I heart their pizza.
