Is this EC's handiwork? Great job!

If so, EC do you know if the menu will offer anything that's non-soy?  Like the cheese or meat substitutes?  Or will it all be soy. I'm dairy and soy free right now and it's tough finding anything out.

Dairy and soy free?  Oye!

Baby has a dairy allergy; you automatically have to cut soy as well as many who have a problem with dairy are also allergic to soy.  The good news is he supposedly will likely outgrow it; possibly as soon as the end of this year, possibly not until he is 4 or 5.  I'm hoping for the former, obviously.

Are you at least able to drink again?  We'd like to think that there is still some joy in your life...

Oh yes, I can have a couple of drinks now, but no more than that (which is just as well).  And I'm having them, believe me. :)

Edited to add: of course, the baby is the joy in my life now.  Not sleep, TV shows I like, food I love, etc.  Some days, this feels like a great trade-off, some days it doesn't.  :-)

I will neither confirm nor deny that it is EC, but if you click on the link, and click on the writer of the article, and look at the other efforts that this individual has put forth, you may be able to make a natural connection......

I know many of you give EC a hard time, but in reality we need more people like him (yes MTS), chalk it up to persistence and an un-acceptance of the status-quo thinking that sometimes seems to permeate.  Alot can be accomplished.

I agree, pot-stirrers are a good thing, even if I don't always agree with them. :)

Good to hear the Park Building is filling up!

I believe they will have selections of such. The menu at their flagship cafe is really nice. If anyone has the time or inclination, it may be a good idea to take a hike out east Youngstown way (Boardman--Rt 224 near Mill Creek Park) and give the place a try. The ambiance is nice, and tasteful....  and what I personally like best about that part is that you are not assaulted with excessively LOUD music as though you were in a night club---as so many places seem to do these days. You can actually have a dinner discussion without shouting across the table. The music they do play is where it belongs..in the background..and it is a very eclectic mix...World Grove type of theme. There is also a swell unique gift shop.

The cafe here would be a scaled down version of that, but if successful, could possibly expand to accommodate the original scenes. Also, there will likely be a small front counter deli-case which sells many items for vegetarian/vegan cooking. These items are sometimes hard to find unless you go to a food co-op or nutrition establishment. So, that will be kind of convenient like a mini grocers counter for such.

For several weeks and weeks, I am sure I must have become a pest to the proprietor to come here to explore possibilities of opening up another. Toured them all over Cleveland and beyond. I really thought the heart of downtown would be a great idea because in my opinion....aside from the historic setting, it would present the opportunity for such a cafe to demonstrate---as it is in many other cities----that this kind of place can work and be appreciated anywhere......and not necessarily have to be inserted or isolated in arty enclaves or districts. It is close enough to 4th  where it will pull a bit more attention from foot traffic beyond remaining in that one area. The surrounding workforce will have an opportunity to get slow food...fast!

On a sustainability note...The owner is also attempting to limit any type of non-biodegradable take out packaging among other things.

Among many choices.....The peanut butter sweet potato bisque soup is really one of my favorites for sides...  as well as the many freshly baked goods and freshly juiced juices served in GLASS!!! (while eating in) Hooray! The Howells family management at PB has been wonderful in being patient with this and doing all it can to accommodate something original for downtown.

I hope people will give it a chance. Again, If there is time, I would suggest trying their original cafe first....

You might want to hook them up with the owners of Treehouse Cafe in Berea - they use earth-friendly packaging for takeout.  It's more expensive than the other stuff and they charge you a quarter for it, which i'm fine with paying.

Awesome job bringing the Flaming Ice Cube to downtown Cleveland, EC!

Way to go, EC!  I agree with one of the posters above.  We definitely need more folks like you in Cleveland.

There is a new bar that just opened up recently right next to Pizza Pan called "Viking Bar." Has anyone been there or heard anything about it?

18th and Euclid probably.

Yes! 18th and Euclid, right across from the Law Building at CSU! I haven't stopped in there yet but I want to and wasn't sure if anyone has had the chance to yet?

Which Pizza Pan?

Newsflash.....on 5/6 the wonderful 56 West in Lakewood is having 56 cent hamburgers.

I started going last year when Melt got crowded. If you haven't been there, it's on 16300 Detroit, cool atmosphere and their food is tremendous.

Check it out!!

I've heard pretty good things bout 56 West.  Do you know if they facilitate vegetarian eating?  For instance, I feel that the Beer Engine facilitates vegetarian choices b/c they explicitly offer to substitute any burger patty w/ either a black bean burger or portobello mushroom cap.

Anyone ever eat at Table 45?  Any thoughts?

YES!  Love it!  One of our Forumers works there.

It is delicious ... I get them "delivermefood.com"ed all the time! And yeah, they do have a veggie burger in their "Build Your Own Burger" section, as well as a number of apparently vegetarian-friendly appetizers and sides (I say apparently only b/c I haven't investigated, and I know a lot of people have had trouble citywide with "hidden duck fat"). If they ARE vegetarian-friendly, I HIGHLY recommend the sweet potato fries ... some of my absolute favorite fries in town.

Echo what 8shades says Guv!!

And sorry to report that Lakewood veggie/vegan friendly Mama mia's on Madison shut down a few weeks ago.

Their "meat"ball sub was tremendous.

Also RIP to Rock Bottom...sad.

^^56 West has one of the best beef burgers in town in my opinion.  I know one of my employees gets the veggie burger and has never complained.  In the past service has been an issue (both in house and take out) but it has been a while for me so maybe that has imporved

Buckeye Beer Engine has a pretty cool promotion for people who ride bicycles to their place Mondays this month.

Verve Review

I just wanted to give a shout out to this new place, at least it’s new to me, Verve on Carnegie in the old Juniper Grill spot.  Was there on Friday night to see the BF playing with the Sammy DeLeon quartet.  He got the scallops, which I sampled, and they were excellent.  Service was very friendly, the décor is nice and the music was great.  FYI they just started doing live music, they took over the lineup from Jazz 28, which has closed.  I think this is a positive thing, as Verve has more room, Jazz 28 was really tiny and hard to accommodate musicians and be profitable.  I am not sure what Mark and Deborah’s (the nice couple from Jazz 28) affiliation is with Verve, they seem to be handling the entertainment.  It was a small crowd when I got there, but it was getting late and the weather was horrible, so that may have kept some people away.  I encourage folks to check it out, especially if you’re looking for a place to hear live music.  There doesn’t seem to be any cover.  You can see the music lineup on Jazz 28’s website or Verve’s facebook page.

I am really sorry to hear about jazz 28. I met the owner and he seemed so nice. The menu was great looking too (albiet heavy veg for carnivore me), and there is so much competition in that price range. I so like Verve and glad the parites came together. Now I need to make an effort to go back.

Jazz 28 Closed? I was just there a few weeks back and got to know Marc and Debbie well since before they opened! The place had class and maturity and was a great place to do something different from the typical 20-something bar scene. Sorry..no offense to 20 somethings but I am 42 and over that sort of thing. Man..this is sad! The food was fantastic and freshly prepared with great care....and served with class and a smile...

This reminds me of the movie The Big Night...where the underlying message was crap is king and quality often gets the shaft. Not saying Verve is crap..Just he idea of a nice small place struggling and closing. Nothing positive to me about such a nice place closing. Sure jazz 28 was a bit small.....a bit loud for the size, but it was just nice....like walking into a cozy little Jazz lounge in the 40's. I live in the neighborhood not too far and could walk there... Sad

I checked out the website. Not sure I am clear.. Did they merge with the V. place? Are Marc and Debbie running out of there now?

This is what I'm not clear about.  It seems like they are just managing the entertainment.  I do remember last time we were at Jazz 28, talking to Mark at the end of the night that he seemed to be stretched a little thin, I believe he has a regular full-time job and then he was running Jazz 28 in the evenings?  So maybe they made a decision that it was just too much to do.  I did like Jazz 28, it was a friendly atmosphere, diverse crowd and they had good food too.  It's really difficult to be able to financially support live music in a venue that small though.  Hopefully they will be able to transfer some of that atmosphere over to Verve.

Stopped in today for a late lunch.  Typical small bar.  TV's, a few booths, tables, bar food.  Had the Viking burger, comes with fries.  It was ok.  We'll see what it will be like in September.

Did anyone notice the article in the PD about area restaurants participating in composting? Very interesting and important..as so much can be cut out of the waste stream by doing this simple thing. The article is online.

Marc Lynn is Professor at John Carroll University in the B-School.  He was my freshman advisor years ago.  I didn't have him for any courses, but he is a real nice guy.  Do we have anything definitive on Jazz 28?

Well this was an email from being on their mailing list.  It sounds like it is closed and that the entertainment portion moved to Verve (although the wording just makes it sound like it was merely an event) and Im not sure what the Tuesday-Thursday..........

The following article about Jazz28 and Verve was on Cleveland.com:

Thanks OP, I dont know how I missed that.  That answers alot of questions!

It sounds like it may or may not be temporary.  I was wondering about the Bop Stop space. .  Bigger and a nice live music venue.  I will be trying Verve though next time in town!

Was downtown on E. 4th before the Grease musical yesterday afternoon and noticed that House of Blues is closed once again and will not open until Tuesday. I'm not sure when they closed though.

^From their web site: http://www.houseofblues.com/venues/clubvenues/cleveland/

Hours of Operation

Tuesday – Friday: 11:30 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Saturday: 4:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.

Sunday & Monday hours may vary. Please call.

Box office opens daily at 10:00 a.m. Sunday hours may vary.

Sounds like Sunday/Monday hours depend on whether there is a show.

^^That's correct.

^ they do have a sign out.  On the walk way by the garage entrance.  Looks like it will have neon lighting like the rest of the signs for the building (have not seen it at night so not sure if its operational).

EDIT:  On second pass it does not look like neon.

Melt in Cleveland Heights opens in about 1 minute.  Will anybody be there for lunch?

I asked some people if they wanted to brave an opening tonight. The answer was a resounding no. Looks like I'll get there some time around November, when things have settled down a bit.

I went at 11:35 and there was a 1 hour wait.  I mostly went out of curiosity, I didn't have time to wait around, so I ate somewhere else.  I actually expected the wait to be longer.

Also, for all those who worry about traffic, the intersection wasn't plugged up at all and there were at least 5 on-street parking spots I noticed open right around the intersection on both Cedar and Taylor.

It's officially open? Thank God. Now all you eastsiders can stay on your side of town... :-o :-o

and maybe I can actually get a Parmageddon...

Sort of MELT related as it is almost next door, there is a sign for "Deagen's" opening Fall 2010 in the old Barnacle Bill's, Cleats space on the corner of Warren and Detroit in Lakewood. I am guessing sports bar-ish but i really have no idea...

^Restaurants have gone in and out of that space so fast - I've officially lost count.

something tells me this is going to stick. I used to live down the street and would have loved something decent within easy walking distance.

I've heard its more "Gastropub" than sports bar, so hopefully it has good food and a nice tap list.
