Echo what KJP suggested.

China Express on Detroit is solid too. Very polite, prompt delivery and cheap as heck.

Though I have to say, it's getting difficult for me to settle for generic Chinese when we have the extraordinary Thai Kitchen and Khiems Vietnamese both right on Madison.

Anyone have any reccomendations for Chinese in Lakewood?

Vine and Bean on Larchmere (shaker square'ish)  was awesome last night. Great food and drink (though a tad pricy) and I loved the ambiance.

Yeah, big fan of Vine and Bean, Heather Haviland's other place.  Theres nothing there that isnt home made (including the soda, ketchup, granola, bread and baked goods, whipped cream etc.) and local.

Not ususally as crowded as Lucky's but all of the quality and.. yeah prices...

Brunch is great!  My cousin - the vegetarian, loves that damn granola and that wrecked canoe crap!  The waffles are amazing!

Ive only gone for brunch... Waffles are great.....

Some people refuse to go to Lucky's (on principle) because they say its pricey.  Not as much brunch, but I guess some of the sandwiches are like $16.00...?

The Quality of their ingredients is super high.  You have to pay for quality.

Anyone have any reccomendations for Chinese in Lakewood?

It's strictly a delivery/carry-out place, but my fave is:

China Star - 3283 West 117th Street, Cleveland - (216) 251-5551

Stop in first for carry-out and a menu. It's located behind the businesses that front the NE corner of West 117 and Lorain. Google has it marked just a little too far north by about a half-block.

P.S., I also hear Panda Wok is pretty good but I've never been. They are on the Lakewood side of West 117th, located next to Mr. Hero north of Franklin Blvd. Here is their website (with a menu/prices on it).....

KJP - Do either of those places use white meat for their chicken?  I love Chinese food, but I'm usually really grossed out by mystery meat.

Hey whats a good place downtown to get a really good cheeseburger or grilled chicken sandwich. Something a little faster, not a full service sit down restaurant. Thanks!

There are a couple greasy spoons by the Justice center (maybe RnR can tell you their names).  Barley House has really good burgers and sandwiches (IMO), and you can order to go.

The Little Bar and Grille on Frankfort, behind Johnny's!

If you're looking for something like a counter service only place (ala Chipotle or similar "fast casual" place), your options are fairly limited.  My #1 rec based on what you describe would be the Market Cafe on E 9th street at Chester. They have a number of food "stations" where you can get things very quickly and then take a seat, or get them to go. When possible, the food is sourced locally and is a little higher quality than most other places, so you'll pay for that but it's well worth it. The grill station serves beef and turkey burgers, chicken and veggie kabobs, grilled chicken sandwiches, loaded baked potatoes, and offers sides of fries or green beans (the fries are frozen, which is one of my gripes, but it's a small gripe).  There is a panini type station with rotating sandwiches, usually a couple of meat ones and a veggie each day such as turkey and cheddar on multigrain bread, italian panini, roasted veggies, etc. They also have salads to order where you just tell the guy what you want in it and he puts it together for you, like you would at Subway (except good food).  There's also a pizza line that has really good pizza as well as a couple of hot/baked casserole things like mac and cheese.  Each station also has a couple of interesting cold salads each day that you can get as good sides, such as roasted veggies or pasta salads or cole slaws.  There's also a very quick takeout station where sandwiches and salads are pre-wrapped and ready go to. There are also local cookies available at that station, and I think that's where you can get coffee drinks and smoothies. It's one of my favorite lunch spots.

Au Bon Pain does some hot sandwiches to order and they're fairly quick but nothing special.  That's on Superior across from the library.  Tomaydo Tomahdo has pretty good sandwiches and is counter type setup, they are in the plaza where subway and captain tony's are on E 9th at Rockwell. None of those places have burgers.

The little bar is good but it's a sit-down place. So are greasy spoons. The Sidebar is the only one left I think, the other one just closed as it's part of the Mall renovation.

You can also get good takeout food at Constantino's market, which is on WEST 9th street. They have hot/prepared foods ready to go, a variety of cold sandwiches and salads (and sushi, if that's your thing) and their cold, heat and eat prepared foods are also very good if you have the means to reheat things back at work. But no burgers there either.

^ Thanks a lot everybody, lll be sure to check some of those places out.

Looks like either Lakewood or the Flats

Also Mo's Southwest Grill is opening up next to the Jimmy Johns by CSU

Dim and Den Sum chef not ready to park food-truck operations: Restaurant Row

That much-anticipated permanent home for local food-truck star Chris Hodgson is on ice, at least for the moment. Fans of his immensely popular Dim and Den Sum truck have been eagerly awaiting the debut of his first restaurant. Not yet. The young chef tells me that his will remain a moveable feast -- at least in the foreseeable future.

"We just stepped back. It wasn't a deal I wanted to do," Hodgson says of a pending agreement to settle into the Grind Building across from the West Side Market.

That doesn't mean his vision of settling into a brick-and-mortar location has blipped off the screen. "I'm looking at Lakewood, and also a really cool space in the Flats," Hodgson says.

Thats old news.  Not likely the flats.  Maybe Lakewood, but dont count on that either.  We shall see.

Yeah, their Facebook posts seem to indicate that they're open to a lot of places but currently concentrating on Tremont, Ohio City and Detroit Shoreway ... And the most recent post on the matter indicated they had seen a sweet spot on West 25th.

Just had a 3 hour meal at Balaton in Shaker Square.  It's a Hungarian place, very ethnic in that everyone there, including a number of the patrons, were clearly 1st generation Hungarian.

The food was just incredible.

The service was great.

The owner was a real nice - kind of a tough guy too, you can tell.

I'll be back there next weekend to try the wine.  Nice little joint they've got.

I don't know about the places KJP mentioned, but some of the highest quality meat you can get at a Chinese restaurant on the west side is at Pearl of the Orient (just west of the old downtown Rocky River on Detroit Rd.).

Has anyone been to Alaturka yet on West 25th?  All the times I've driven by it has looked pretty empty (granted I usually only drive by weekday nights).

Same owners as the Shaker one?

Balaton is awesome. AWESOME.

^Totally agree.  I am desperately craving it, in fact.

Same owners as Anatoli Cafe.

^Are you saying the owners of Anatoli Cafe and Balaton are the same?  Are you sure about that.  That would seem very strange to me.

By the way...great Hungarian on the west side.  Little Budapest on Center Ridge in Westlake.  It has been there for a while but I just ate there for the first time a couple of weeks ago and have been back twice since.

I see...you mean the owner of Anatoli Cafe and Alatuka are the same.  My bad.

Sorry Hts, that's what I meant to say.

Yes, Shaker was the original restaurant.  Now they have two, Pearl East (Shaker) (http://www.pearl-east.com) and Pearl West (Rocky River) (http://www.pearlwest.com).  To me, they rank up there with Sun Luck Garden for my Best Chinese in Cleveland award.  Also, they make and sell their own sauces, complete with nutrition facts on the bottle (which is nice so you can see how much better some are for you than others).

XYZ Tavern to Open Next Friday

Posted by Douglas Trattner on Fri, Feb 11, 2011 at 11:36 AM

It's all but guaranteed, says Randy Kelley: XYZ the Tavern will open its doors next Friday (February 18) at 5 p.m.

"It was a loooong time coming, I'll tell you what," Kelley said with a sigh of relief. The final inspections took place this week, finally clearing the way for the Detroit Shoreway restaurant's opening.

Michael Symon's third B Spot will land at Westlake's Crocker Park: Restaurant Row

"A lot of fans hoped for a Lakewood location. Symon knows that, but says repeated forays searching for inner-ring real estate hit dead ends. 'We couldn’t find the right space — mostly because of parking — and we love it there but it was either a great space and no parking or vice-versa,' he says."

booooo.  wanted Lakewood and Lakewood could use it more.

I'm thrilled he's successful enough to have yet a 3rd location open up, esp after the closing of the Avon one.

Not our preferred location. Still hope he does well though.

In the crains article about it, Doug Petkovic, Symon's business partner, said they have also been looking downtown for a bspot location.

To bad the former Teresa Pizza spot isn't probably big enough. Do we know whats going there yet? I thought I remember McCleveland saying someone from thats already on east 4th is also opening something in that spot

Yeah, McCleveland did say that.  Chef Sawyer at the Greenhouse Tavern has been hinting at a new restaurant, so that was my initial thought

Was at the greenhouse tavern last Thursday with my mother and saw Sawyer and what looked to be either a partner or designer with 2 older gentlemen that I guessed to be investors. When I walked past their table I saw them all looking at and discussing a floor plan that included tables, etc. My guess is he is about to open another restaurant somewhere.

I wonder if they could go into the Crop space once that's vacated?

my money is on uptown.  I hear leasing is going very well there.

What's "uptown" area consist of?

the MRN development

Ok, I don't know what that is either, sorry. Everyone on here isn't an architect :)  Is uptown considered the area around the Q or something?

Oh. Well, that wouldn't be downtown then, would it? I'm sure he'd be very busy over there though, with the schools in closer proximity. Can't read through all 17 pages of that thread to find out what it is, but will when I have more time.

I still think it would be fun to speculate about where he might go downtown, if anyone has ideas?

I'm confused... are we talking bspot or jonathon sawyer?  I was talking about jonathon sawyer.  although it wouldn't surprise me to see both at uptown.

Oh, I thought we were talking about Symon's place.

Denajua's back, with Le Oui Oui Crepe Cafe in Cleveland's University Circle: Restaurant Row

By Joe Crea, The Plain Dealer

"A city's just not a city without quirky little fun places with quirky characters who run them. Finally, Cleveland's got some of its best "quirk" back. Le Oui Oui Crepe Cafe and its peripatetic owner, Denajua (who divides her time between Cleveland and Paris, where her husband, Didier, resides), are back on the scene. "

According to Taste Section of PD, Michael is openig another B-Spot in Westlake (Crocker Park where Agave is now located).  I think this is the 3rd (others in Woodmere and Strongsville).  I believe he has been scoping out Westlake for a while.

@htsguy - mentioned and discussed on p. 113

^thanks...I missed that.

It appears that the Crepes De Luxe spot in the Arcade has closed.  They have not been open in the morning or for lunch the last few times I have been in there.

Unfortunately I'm not surprised. Ate there 3 times and never a good meal, though they were very nice.
