March 27, 201114 yr Get Help Soon So I went to the new soda ice cream place at Gordon arts district for today's opening. Pro: Apparently there was a ton of business all day, which is great to hear. Plus substantial free parking around the area was nice. Con: The food wasn't that good for the price, which was astronomically expensive. No way I'm going back just on the price alone. Plus it didn't have the old school feel I had been anticipating. Plus a few of the servers were too catty with each other and immature overall. Plus there's too little seating. Plus there are these weird, empty hallways that lead to the bathroom. Paint the walls or put more photos of old school Cleveland or something - it just looked odd. Plus, did I mention how pricey that place is??? Really con: A hearty f!!k you Cleveland city planners for making it so inpossible to take a right turn off Superior by and east of public square! The only way I can, I think, is to drive on the bus lane, which may or may not be illegal. What a confusing mess!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, I guess that's not relevant to the soda place. Overall, I hope it does well but I was not impressed. Cool street though. SF Bob, that's funny! :-D The prices are not that expensive....at all.
March 28, 201114 yr $5 (after tax) for a small mug of rootbeer with a relatively small scoop of ice cream, even if it is homemade, is expensive. I too had it--it wasn't that impressive. And are you two out of your minds (not you mike, the other two posters)? Christ, they had sundaes there for 5, 6, 7 dollars. You know the place is pricey when the website's menu doesn't even list the prices.
March 28, 201114 yr Obviously you may very well have a simple palate and if so there are many other establishments like Dairy Queen that would fit your budget and taste requirements. If you think $5 is too much for a dessert then you need to maybe get out more and actually see what people pay for desserts or anything for that matter. If this establishment is putting quality into their product then GODD FOR THEM and they should charge accordingly, and perhaps attract a little higher end clientele to the area. $5 (after tax) for a small mug of rootbeer with a relatively small scoop of ice cream, even if it is homemade, is expensive. March 28, 201114 yr Haven't been to Sweet Moses yet, but prices sound inline with my other favorite place, Tremont Scoops, where a root beer float is around 5 bucks, and a large shake will cost you 6.
March 28, 201114 yr Sundae prices sound in line with Mitchell's in RR. Most of their's start at $5-ish. Looking forward to trying it out..
March 28, 201114 yr These prices are similar to other quality places around town. I suggest you look at the menu for Tremont Scoops. Btw, anyone buying Jeni's ice cream in Cleveland (me included) is paying 9.99 or 10.99 a PINT! It's good so I'm not complaining.
March 28, 201114 yr I went with my wife and son - got ice cream and popcorn. Didn't find the prices to be too expensive given its a locally owned/homemade ice cream shop.
March 28, 201114 yr Did I miss something? I went by Massimo de Milano on Friday evening and it was dark! Please tell me they are just renovating and not closed. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
March 28, 201114 yr Massimo, almost as long as I can remember has only been open for lunch, and is an event space in the evening. Though most weekends it is booked so that is probably how you are used to seeing it.
March 28, 201114 yr Agreed, they stopped serving dinner quite awhile ago, they only open in the evening for special events.
March 28, 201114 yr I've been to Tremont Scoops quite a bit - the amount of food there you get, not to mention overall quality, was definitely greater and thus worth the excessive costs.
March 29, 201114 yr Thanks McCleveland and Rockandroller. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 4, 201114 yr did flour open (it was supposed to open 3/29)? too bad its in the burbs, but flour is by former baricelli chef paul minillo so it should be very good! more: http://clevelandfoodie.com/2011/02/sneak-peak-flour.html
April 5, 201114 yr Crains food blog today repors that Michael Symon opening pizza place on east side in November. Construction also happened to start last week on a remodeling of the former Smith & Hawken space at Eton, which is on the front of building, mere feet from his b spot. I'm guessing we know the location.
April 5, 201114 yr ^Any mention where on east side this MS pizza place will be? C'mon man, downtown needs a top notch pizza place!
April 5, 201114 yr Guessing pizza place (P Spot? Pizza Symon?) going in at Eton, noted above. Location proven and has seemingly good Stark relationship.
April 5, 201114 yr They also have that salad place in the middle of the mall. Eaton is turning into quite the restaurant destination
April 5, 201114 yr Interesting, too.... Symon's acclaimed pastry chef Cory Barrett left Lola last Summer, but just quietly came back from Seattle to work for Symon. Original Eton Symon place was to be a patisserie/dessert spot, called Bittersweet, which was scrapped in favor of B Spot. However, Barrett is back and now and lists Bittersweet as one of the places he works... i wonder if other plans are in the works, too....
April 5, 201114 yr to addcto above, meant to say that Barrett's Facebook page notes Bittersweet as current employer, alomg with lola, etc...
April 5, 201114 yr I wonder what happened with Cory? I'm glad he's back! Seattle didn't deserve him :)
April 5, 201114 yr ^Any mention where on east side this MS pizza place will be? C'mon man, downtown needs a top notch pizza place! Vincenza's?
April 5, 201114 yr ^I haven't been there for years, so I might not remembering it right, but does it have table service and decent atmosphere? Is it open for dinner? Don't get me wrong, I love slices, but a good sit down pizza place with reasonable wine list and good beer is a neighborhood necessity, IMHO.
April 5, 201114 yr No, it's a counter service only place, no alcohol, and not open for din. RNR are you sure about dinner? I thought I remember coming down for a cavs game and grabbing some pizza. This was a few years ago so it could have changed. But I will agree that while a great lunch spot, not so great for dinner.
April 5, 201114 yr I called them. If there is an event going on, they stay open til 6:30. So typically no, but on a game night, yes, but only early.
April 5, 201114 yr There are just so many other yummy things there that I haven't been able to make myself order it. I can't tear myself away from the other, non-pizza menu items.
April 5, 201114 yr I called them. If there is an event going on, they stay open til 6:30. So typically no, but on a game night, yes, but only early. I thought Vinny's was open til 7 regularly. There's been at least 3-4 times that I've made a 6:30 call and walked down there to get a pizza before they close.
April 5, 201114 yr What can I tell ya. That's what the lady told me when I called. Maybe those nights that you went, there were events downtown. I mean, "events" could be sporting events, concerts, etc.
April 5, 201114 yr I actually thought Vincenzo's closed at 6pm. It has been closed every single time I've tried to go there (which is only a handful, but usually between 6pm and 7pm).
April 5, 201114 yr Restaurant, art gallery open on Madison Avenue at the west entrance to Birdtown. Barroco Grill Brings a Little Bit of South America to Lakewood The name Barroco is Spanish for Baroque — an artistic style following the Renaissance. The period is best characterized by movement, emotion and change. To the father/son owners of the new South American-style restaurant that quietly opened last week, Barroco about says it all.... http://lakewood-oh.patch.com/articles/barroco-grill-brings-a-little-bit-of-south-america-to-lakewood
April 5, 201114 yr There's a couple of new places that just opened/opening up around town: Name unknown" - located in the old Mama Mia's of Lakewood, this is going to be a healthy fast food place. Not yet open. Sorry for vague info, I am just trying to share what I do know, hopefully others can share more info. Looks like its called Barroco Grill. Seems like they are near opening, though they don't give a date. I like their logo and print ads....they are well done. Very excited to check it out and try the food. http://www.facebook.com/Barrocogrill Yeah there was more posted upthread w/website. Looks pretty cool.
April 6, 201114 yr Guessing pizza place (P Spot? Pizza Symon?) going in at Eton, noted above. Location proven and has seemingly good Stark relationship. Umm, I would stay away from "P Spot" if I was him. Has anyone tried the pizza at Chinato? Yes, very good. Had the Mushrooms, pecorino, arugula and truffle oil Cleveland considers restaurant trans fats ban By Associated Press POSTED: 07:40 a.m. EDT, Apr 06, 2011 CLEVELAND: Proposals before Cleveland's city council would outlaw artery-clogging trans fats in restaurant food and ban smoking at public parks and within 150 feet of city buildings. Councilman Joe Cimperman tells the Plain Dealer newspaper the measures he introduced Monday would back up a health campaign launched by four Cleveland hospitals and Mayor Frank Jackson. "Healthy Cleveland" began in February toward making the city the healthiest in the country. A spokeswoman for the mayor says the proposed ordinances would boost the campaign. Cimperman says some critics who'd call the legislation too intrusive said the same thing about laws requiring seat belt use in cars. Violations of the smoking restrictions would bring fines of up to $250. The trans fats ban would be similar to one enacted in New York. April 11, 201114 yr Contest names Cleveland area bakery best in U.S. By Associated Press POSTED: 08:34 a.m. EDT, Apr 11, 2011 AMHERST, OHIO: An Ohio bakery known for something it calls a snoogle has been named America's best bakery in a contest sponsored by an industry publication. Baking Buyer's editorial team chose Kiedrowski's (kih-DROW'-skeez) Simply Delicious Bakery as one of nine finalists for the title. An online vote gave the win to the family-owned bakery in Amherst, about 30 miles west of Cleveland. Baking Buyer says Kiedrowski's drew more than half of the more than 55,000 votes cast. The magazine says that shows the bakery has devoted fans. http://www.ohio.com/news/break_news/119591084.html
April 11, 201114 yr It looks like we know what will be going into the former Theresa's Pizza spot on Euclid by East 4th. A noodle restaurant called Noodlecat run by Jonathan Sawyer. Never been to one but it does sound interesting. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2011/04/11/sly-noodle-slurping-cat-hints-at-new-noodle-shop
April 11, 201114 yr Oh my god that sounds like a totally awesome addition to the neighborhood! Weren't there rumors about the Bodies space going to a new place to be opened by one of the existing restaurateurs? I wonder if this is ultimately what that was all about. There are still many viable, accessible formats that can be rolled out in Cleveland and it is awesome to see this kind of local experimentation. Screw Wagamama. This really makes me happy.
April 12, 201114 yr Oh my god that sounds like a totally awesome addition to the neighborhood! Weren't there rumors about the Bodies space going to a new place to be opened by one of the existing restaurateurs? I wonder if this is ultimately what that was all about. I'm not sure that the Bodies space (any part of it) was to be used by a restaurateur. I think it (a Sawyer place or a Symon place) was always thought to be exactly where it ended up, or in some other vacancy up the street in the 200 or 300 blocks. I think all 3 storefronts of the Bodies space was to be used for whomever the next tenant was. As we know, not only will CLE+ be in the entire space but, according to the press releases on this, the second floor of that space as well (the old I.J. Fox second floor is in the process of being gutted and opened up now).
April 12, 201114 yr ^Yeah, you're right, I just confused the old rumor. Oh well, I'm much happier with real news than old rumor :)
April 12, 201114 yr More info about Noodlecat in Restaurant Row: http://www.cleveland.com/dining/index.ssf/2011/04/clevelands_dante_boccuzzi_jona.html And, get this, it's got competition! In advance of opening Ginko, a Japanese-themed restaurant from his Tremont landmark, Dante, restaurateur Dante Boccuzzi has already started a late-night Tokyo-style noodle menu in the main dining room.
April 12, 201114 yr +CLE will not be taking the corner spot at E4th and Euclid. THey are the storefronts west of that space.
April 12, 201114 yr Yes thanks. When I wrote CLE+, I meant 'CLE+ et al'. That's Positively Cleveland offices , the Greater Clevleand Sports Commission offices, the visitors center and the "Cleveland-centric" store and/or restaurant which will go at that corner location of 4th & Euclid.
