I have 2 good friends whose food judgment I trust who have been there and they've raved about the food. The atmosphere (it's basically in a hotel lobby) leaves something to be desired but who cares, when the food is good. I have recommended it to several out of town visitors and nobody's been disappointed.

Awesome!  Good to know!

I second the AMP 150 recommendation. Go with a party of 4 and get the 3 course meal that way you can try a little bit of everything.

Emmie, I have heard nothing but great things....  I have it on my list to try on a trip back, but due to the location it usually ends up near the bottom of my list on a trip of 2-3 days.

I'm in the minority when it comes to AMP 150. My wife and I eat out all the time and we found the experience just o.k. The food was decent but not great. I would give it a C+. I try not and say anything about a restaurant since I've only been there once but I won't be back.  My wife commented that I make better meals at home and that's how I felt. It wasn't anything better than what we could have prepared at home. However, the prices were very reasonable.

Anyone know where I can get Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy on draft in or around Lakewood?  I tried Winking Lizard, google search, and came up with nothing.  Thanks!

Sometimes they have it at Corky's by St. Eds.  Not always though.  Another possibility is the Beer Engine, but that's just a guess.

Parkview Nite Club (One of my favorite places in Cleveland) has Summer Shandy.  Its on West 58th North of Detroit.  Great food too!!!

^Actually in Cleveland, but less than 10 minute drive from Lakewood.

And Emmie, if you havent been to the Parkwood, I have a feeling you would like it.

Lol... Nice

That's awesome. I was laughing out loud.

Kenilworth has it on tap.

Thanks! I may have to hit it up this weekend!

What are the best bar and grills downtown in your opinion

There really aren't any at the present time.

Really?  What defines a "Bar and Grill" then?

I was thinking the same thing, what is the Little Bar if not a bar and grill?

Yes there are defintely some, although not as many as there once was.

My post was that there weren't any that I thought were "best".

My bad though on this one. I forgot about Little Bar and Grill.

And It IS good. The only one probably.

NOODLECAT

Must have.....

Awesome Noodlecat production

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but Jeni's is now open in Chagrin Falls.

I'll have to check out Jeni's later this week. Thanks for the update.

omg, I was just in Willoughby all day and Jeni's popped into my mind.

I wanted to see if the store was open in Chagrin.

We were gonna shoot down River Rd. but I thought...nah, I haven't heard anything yet.

Darnit.

Jeni's in Chagin opened Friday and was very steadily busy all weekend long - despite much wind and rain on Saturday. I live just down the same street it's on (Main) - and passed through downtown probably 10 times Fri-Sun. Always a line inside - and almost always a line out the door (or WAY out the door) - even at 10 at night  Have been 3x ourselves already (long-time Jeni's fans!)

Portions are - and I mean it in a good way for my waist - modestly sized... Ice cream is $4, $5 and $6 for 2, 3 or 4 golf ball-ish+ sized scoops of any flavor combo you wish in a dish - waffle cone $1 more...  Probably 20 flavors available now. Also have sundaes, floats and ice cream sandwiches (oatmeal creme - $5 - was killer...)

Already heard some griping among locals about cost/size of Jeni's servings, lack of kids cones and whether Chagrin can support both Jeni's and the local institution the Popcorn Shoppe (where the ice cream is more of the "Kids Cone $1" variety...) - but there was no shortage of folks hitting the joint.  My wife and I keep trying to explain to folks that Jeni's is a coup for the area - it's top quality and will be a destination - and that the product served - and the market it attracts  - has little to do with what the Popcorn Shoppe does.

Tried Paul Minnillo's new Flour this weeked  in Moreland Hills.  Beautiful, downtown-sleek space in a new, upscale strip center at Chagrin/SOM Center. Got there too late on Saturday to try much food (only pizzas being served at 11ish) - but very much enjoyed the bright flavors of the brick-oven, wood-fired sausage (salsiccia) and mushroom (fungi) pizzas - at the soapstone bar, $12 and $15 respectively for perhaps 10-inch, medium crust pies.

Thanks for the Chagrin Valley updates.

Good info, as I see more excursions for me this summer to DT Willoughby, Chagrin Falls and other area locations.

I finally had my Summer Shandy.  Now mind you, I found it at Target, so it was in a bottle, and I thought it was ok.  Nothing super duper wonderful about it.  I actually prefer (and forgive me if I get the name wrong), Samuel Adams Noble Pils.  I'm not a beer expert or anything, but it had the same citrusy notes that the shandy did.  It was good, but everyone at work built up this hype about it, and for me, it didn't live up to the hype.

I've only had Leinenkugel's Classic Amber, but I thought it was awful.  Really just a small step up from a Budweiser or something.  They're owned by a big boy (SABMiller) so I'm wondering if they used to be good and were ruined by mass production practices.  Beer Advocate users gave the Summer Shandy a C+, so I wouldn't expect too much from it (I believe the Classic Amber got a C+ as well).

Lemon flavored beer will not be looked upon highly by many serious beer enthusiasts.  I know some women that love the stuff but I think thats because it doesn't really taste like beer.  So if you are looking for lemon-beer it will be good but if you want beer it won't be what you are looking for.

I disagree.  Check the Beer Advocate ratings on any Lindemans lambic.  Those are as fruity as they come and they all got B or better.

For a good sissy beer I always enjoyed Pete's Rally Cap Ale. Nice refreshing lemony taste.

Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat is fantastic IMO... but it is a "fruitier" beer.  It's great in the summer.

Dish Deli & Catering in Tremont closing, chef Donna Chriszt headed to new Fountain in Moreland Hills

By Joe Crea, The Plain Dealer

Call it bad news/good news for restaurateur Donna Chriszt.

First, the bad news. The Dish Deli & Catering chef and co-owner told me she's had to close Dish "after the worst four months I've faced in any business I've ever had," she says.

"Odd thing is, last year we had the best eight months I've ever had," she adds. "It went from awesome to awful."

Moreland Hills Town Centre plaza

BARF

I really can't wait until all of our "town centers" are strip plazas behind parking lots at inconsequential intersections in suburbia.

Well the owner of that strip has got to be thrilled.  It has been almost a year and half since it was completed and only now is just half filled with this new restaurant.  Must be slashing rents to finally get it leased (and in such a high end neighborhood).

Actually don't understand how restaurants are going into the spaces there.  Really not configured great for restaurants.

Finally...I understand where Chritz is coming from when she states that the last four months were horrible for her.  I have heard a number of restaurant owners complaining that sales are down from the first quarter of last year.  This is strange since that was still the height of the "recession" which we are now suppose to be coming out of.  Perhaps it was/is the weather.  I am sure $4.00 gas is not helping.

For better or worse the once vacant "strip mall" (it's really a nice version of one, at the intersection of two major roads in what I believe is billed as the wealthiest Ohio neighborhood - Chagrin/SOM Center) is now mostly leased between Fountain, a salon, a clothing store (J3, coming this Fall) and Flour. looks like perhaps only one, maybe two spaces remain - and I'd bet those goes pretty quickly.

One of the two empty is already spoken for as well, should hear something in the next few months.

Market Garden Brewery update

The long-awaited Market Garden Brewery & Distillery is getting closer to opening. Brewmaster Andy Tveekrem may start brewing Wednesday. “Just working out the last details of the refrigeration system and when that’s done to my satisfaction, we commence brewing,” he said in an e-mail. “And with any luck, the restaurant will be open for business within 60 days– things are shaping up fast around here.” The brewery is located in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood near Great Lakes Brewing and right next to the West Side Market.

Here's a little more on Lizardville and a website placeholder:

New Winking Lizard

Customers can buy beer to go — in both bottles and growlers — or drink it there. People also will be able to buy a single bottle, as opposed to a six-pack. Lizardville isn't a restaurant. It's small and will seat only about 30 people.

The Lizardville website (http://lizardville.net/) will feature a rundown of the beers and whiskeys available and will go live soon.

Stop it!  You're getting me too excited.

If only the Detroit Shoreway could gave scored the Jeni's in Chagrin instead! I found the service and quality to be run of the mill. Malleys in Lakewood and Mitchells in RR offer more premium ice creams and specialties for slightly better prices. Perhaps this shoppe can pull in beach traffic once the tunnels are complete?

So I went to the new soda ice cream place at Gordon arts district for today's opening.

Pro: Apparently there was a ton of business all day, which is great to hear.  Plus substantial free parking around the area was nice.

Con: The food wasn't that good for the price, which was astronomically expensive. No way I'm going back just on the price alone. Plus it didn't have the old school feel I had been anticipating.  Plus a few of the servers were too catty with each other and immature overall. Plus there's too little seating. Plus there are these weird, empty hallways that lead to the bathroom. Paint the walls or put more photos of old school Cleveland or something - it just looked odd. Plus, did I mention how pricey that place is???

Really con: A hearty f!!k you Cleveland city planners for making it so inpossible to take a right turn off Superior by and east of public square!  The only way I can, I think, is to drive on the bus lane, which may or may not be illegal. What a confusing mess!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I guess that's not relevant to the soda place. Overall, I hope it does well but I was not impressed.  Cool street though.

Not once Honey Hut opens at Edgewater!

One more month!

503 Prospect, the southeast storefront in the Colonial Marketplace that faces Prospect is being renovated for Sushi 86. Posters of sushi rolls and the building permit, issued on April 13th, are displayed in the windows.

503 Prospect is next to the Residence Inn. I hope to add some pics later today.

Awesome.  Thanks!

That is real good news. That place has been empty for a long time.  Is something happening to the Sushi 86 on Public square??

I think you mean the southwest storefront on the arcade? The old Indigo Bistro?
