One other note about Noddlecat: I hope it's used as an opportunity to liven up the exterior of that storefront a bit, though the project budget [per the article, $160k] doesn't seem very big.  That storefront is a big ole pile of bland and cheap right now.

I would be surprised if it was NOT Uptown.

I would be surprised if it was NOT Uptown.

Are you referring to the Jonathon Sawyer restaurant?  I believe the second green restaurant they are referring to is Noodlecat, not another one after that.

Speaking of that area, does anyone know what's happening with the old Truffles space?

It appears to be reopened as a coffee shop again. That makes 4 coffee shops in a 4 block area. Hopefully they can all make it.

I would be surprised if it was NOT Uptown.

Meanwhile, Mr. Sawyer, business partner and wife Amelia Zatik-Sawyer, and partner Jonathan Seeholzer over the next year or two expect to unveil two more concepts, one planned for downtown and one on Cleveland's East Side, though Mr. Sawyer could not discuss specifics.

Got it, thanks.  I never was a good speed reader (or maybe my ADD kicked in before the last paragraph).

The reason I thought you may have misread was because initially I read the title to mean another green restaurant besides Noodlecat (since I've known about that one for a while now) but then realized they meant Greenhouse Tavern and Noodlecat.

That's exciting that they're going to open a couple more.  Hopefully they level out at around four.  That amount has seemed to work very well for my other favorite Cleveland chef, Zach Bruell.

I would be surprised if it was NOT Uptown.

I like the way you think!  It does seem like a perfect fit.  UC proper is still woefully under-served by casual, table-service restauarants, so hopefully he helps plug that hole.

Metro Bar + Kitchen closes in Cleveland's Warehouse District, making way for Bar Louie: Restaurant Row

Metro Bar + Kitchen is out, and Bar Louie is moving in at the corner of West Sixth Street and St. Clair Avenue in Cleveland's Warehouse District.

Joe Saccone, principal partner for Beachwood-based Hyde Park Restaurant Systems, confirms that his company has sold rights to the space at 1352 West Sixth St.

Brandt Evans' Pura Vida, Sam McNulty's Market Garden among new Cleveland restaurants to make the scene in coming weeks: Restaurant Row

• Pura Vida, popular chef Brandt Evans' latest place, will be first to open -- early next month, right on Public Square in downtown Cleveland. The 100-seat restaurant, plus 30 patio seats, looks out onto the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. Evans will initially focus on breakfast and lunch, with casual dinner service to come a few weeks later.

Pura Vita, next to Cadillac Ranch, has their sign up and looks like they have been doing training or other soft opening type activities.  A sign on the door states they will be open to the public beginning June 6th.

The space looks really good from what can be seen.  Also while the sign is completely readable when you exit Tower City, which is a good distance away.

I saw a ton of people sitting outside Pura Vita on Monday when I was walking up to the Indians game.

oooh, I didn't know about Pura Vita. EXCITED!

I saw a ton of people sitting outside Pura Vita on Monday when I was walking up to the Indians game.

I think they either had a soft opening or they just invited some food critics. Oh, and its Vida, with a 'D'.

Ah, pure life. That makes sense. I wish they'd get a menu up!

My mistake YG. Vita with a D looks pretty cool. To me, it changes the whole dynamic to that corner of Public Square. It's hard to believe in a few short years that the corner/Euclid Ave has gone from an embarrassing dead zone to housing Pura Vida, CCC Culinary Institute, Cadillac Ranch, Jimmy Johns, Zoup! and soon to be Noodlecat. Quite impressive.

Last but not least The Flaming Cube! Thanks for the addition.

Don't forget the Flaming Ice Cube - Vegans gotta eat to.

I was walking yesterday past the black building on West 9th that is currently being renovated across from Constantinos. I poked my head in and asked the construction workers what was going into the spot and they believed it was going to be a hibachi type of restaurant.  Also, I heard that Lust is leaving West 6th and Ace's Grill is moving into the space. There is an Ace's in North Ridgeville. www.acesgrill.com

^ That should make some people happy

Lust is leaving?  I guess that means that everything is surely going to be peaches and ice cream in the WHD this summer?  No more fights.  Thank God.

Not sure of a timeline.

Ace's is a pretty good place. Where is Lust moving to?

Lust lease is up and the owners of the building had zero plans of renewing his lease.

So, this new yogurt place at Legacy Village is awesome. They have the same exact business model to Menchie's which opened this week at Eton. It's like comparing Qdoba to Chipotle. In this case, it's pick yogurt and add your own toppings. It's actually quite delicious and a lot of fun. Both places are always busy as hell when I go there, perhaps due to nice weather but probably also because they're a new concept here in NE Ohio. Menchie's, based out of Los Angeles is opening 6 more in the region this year, including Fairlawn, Mayfield Heights, Crocker Park, downtown Lakewood, and Rocky River - according to the owner I spoke to last night.

Last night, the line at menchies in woodmere was out the door, though to be fair there is only one door for entrance/exit. Plus the indoor chop it salad restaurant looked open (cold open maybe and the vegan dessert place is almost ready. Eton is getting to be quite the restaurant destination

Tbideon, I was there too! At about 9:00pm it was a line out the door! The vegan dessert place is now open. But when I was there at 6:30pm, it had already closed for the night. It's a large kiosk-esque area in the middle of the mall.

I've been to both Menchie's and Yogurt Vi (at Legacy).  IMO, Yogurt Vi is much better.  The toppings were refilled better, seemed fresher, and the yogurt itself was no comparison better at Yogurt Vi.

Froyo is all the rage, and for good reason.  I can't believe there's not more of these places around Cleveland.

Presently eating at Bricco's, multiple course meal.

Holy sh!t this food is good

The new wave of yogurt places - "froyo" - are riding on the coattails of Pinkberry - the hip chain that really put froyo on the map. Yes, it's like TCBY to a degree - but the claim to fame of this new wave is the tart yogurt - a very fresh, slightly sour taste - vastly different from the creamy, soft serve ice cream like frozen vanilla and chocolate yogurt of the TCBY days.  Now most of these places all have those flavors, to a degree, too - but tart is, to me, so much better - especially with some kiwi, berries, mango on top, etc...

However, I like the Pinkberry or Red Mango model - where they serve you from behind a counter - vs. these self-serve places that are beginning to open up not just here but everywhere - like the two on the east side.  Funny that both Menchies (which I think is FANTASTIC - we've been 4-5 times already in a week) and Yogurt Vi (one visit) - are both poorly designed. Yogurt Vi is awkwardly planned - with way too much empty space in the middle of the store - and a strange pay/counter setup that seems an afterthought.  Menchies looks like a million - much nicer and hipper design - but funnels all customers into perhaps a 3-4 foot wide, curved serving area - which gets clogged up - especially when a new mom and her mother arrogantly took their double-wide stroller into the restaurant line the other night. Ridiculous... Both places have 10-15 self-serve flavors and a few dozen toppings. Menchies is so good it makes me long for Pinkberry no more... (BTW, there is  or was a bad froyo place called Spoon Me at the strip mall part of Crocker Park.  NOt good at al... Menchies will kill it if still open.

Yeah, nothing at all like TCBY (which I actually used to like). It's the tart yogurt combination with berries on top (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries for me every time) that I like.  Hopefully it's as healthy as it seems it would be, and it's very tasty.

Also - went to the Chop-It Salad Co., noted above, at Eton the other day for lunch. Nice crowd - and good looking layout for both the restaurant and dining space - with comfy chairs, round banquette seating, nice tables (though I wish Eton had not just plopped these restaurants into the center - it's still a bit odd to see them there - they have a temporary feel.)

The "build your salad and we toss it for you" concept is a good one - and I wanted to love the place - but was more than a little disappointed with the result. Rather than going gourmet - and using thick sliced, Niman Ranch bacon, free range chicken breasts, etc... - it was clear much of this - perhaps even the "grilled" meat for chix salad, etc..- was straight from Sysco's everything to everybody warehouse - (the Sysco guy was even there overseeing the operation... There is just a microwave and Foreman-like grill in the space - no real kitchen to prep...). Salad was something like $8.69 for a mostly lettuce salad, modest on the other ingredients...  - which they then chop in front of you. This was inches from B-Spot - where I could have had a $12 Stripper Salad - loaded with super quality bacon, Pat LaFrieda burger, great blue cheese, etc...

Oh - and there's also a huge problem they say, via signs, that they're working on --- the mid-mall space has a tall ceiling that's creating huge echoes - plus swallowing other sounds. Almost impossible to communicate with the salad choppers just feet in front of you. Plus - the white, plain styrofoam cups and no-name soft drink choices (other than Coke, Diet) - and no self-serve refills (in this day and age?) are strictly 2nd rate...

Hey anyone know what's going on with the old Jillian's space in Cleveland Heights?  Closed a few months back and it looked like a new restaurant was set to open, but now I'm not sure.

Hey anyone know what's going on with the old Jillian's space in Cleveland Heights?  Closed a few months back and it looked like a new restaurant was set to open, but now I'm not sure.

Jillian's closed in Feburary and will be re-opening as a "New York style tapas bar".  Here is a link to an article about the closing and future of the old Jillian's space:  http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2011/02/10/jillians-is-closing-space-to-be-reborn-as-tapas-bar

Thanks, TheBeaver.  Where's Eddie Haskell, Wally, and Ms. Cleaver?

I saw that article and a month or two back I saw signs in the windows indicating the upcoming arrival of the restaurant, but now the signs are gone and it's almost looking as if the project has been stalled.

I also agree with Clevelander17, this project is definitely stalled or scrapped. Aladdin's back door where the building's bathrooms were got a complete high end re-model which also capped the wall to Jillian's. But that's all that's happened.

I walked by late Wednesday night and there were workers sanding the floors.  Whatever work is going on is going on very slowly.  About the only time I see anyone there is in the evening.

Good info.  There also appears to be a takeout place opening in the long-empty corner space once occupied by Whitmore's at the intersection of Cedar-Lee (caddy-corner from the Cedar Lee Theater).  The name of the place is Belly Backers and appears to be something like ribs/chicken/barbecue.

Great event at Zack Bruell restaurants. Michelle covers it in her blog:

http://clevelandfoodie.com/2011/06/happy-summer-tour-de-bruell-summer-solstice-your-chance-to-win.html

From the blog:

All fans that complete the Tour de Bruell will receive a commemorative t-shirt, featuring the 2011  theme:  “Get Your Zack On.”  From those individuals, 10 semi-finalists and their guests will be randomly selected to enjoy a complimentary wine tasting dinner at Table 45, featuring cuisine by Bruell and champagne offerings by Moët & Chandon.  In addition, one grand prize winner will receive the custom, in-home, four-course dinner for eight, prepared by Bruell.

The first person at each restaurant to turn in a completed Tour de Bruell ticket will win a chauffeured progressive dinner, hosted by Bruell, with one course at each of the four Zack Bruell restaurants.

When I walk home from university station I pass by this.  I believe it's just a small crew doing the work, hence the slow-goingness.  The signs said that the new place was going to be called Myxx "dine-drink-degage".  This is the article that I found about it when I first looked into it:

http://www.heightsobserver.org/read/2011/05/03/myxx-to-open-at-former-jillians-space

Hmm, it doesnt sound like the tapas place that we originally heard about.

I dont know, but it sounds like another one those places that ends up struggling because it doesnt know what it wants to be...  Like back when downtown had Flo, which had really good food, beautiful place, had dance beats thumping etc. etc..  I know intially I would see older people or families in there eating, and next thing you knew there was thumping music etc...  So, the place didnt find its "place"...

Same thing thing for many other places I can think of (Like what eventually became Jaxs).

Maybe Im wrong, and that area could use something like this if it really is lacking a places that fill this niches, but likely one of the features will become unimportant (for example the food)

I feel like this place MIGHT do okay because of Case and maybe John Carroll.

The restaurant at Whiskey Island was crazy fun yesterday. Good beer prices, great crowd, pretty greasy but delicious food

  • 2 weeks later...

It looks like the View on Prospect has closed down. One less venue for salsa:(

It was a really cool place, expensive as hell, and a lot of fun on Friday nights. Between that and RJ Bolands closing--bleh.

anyone try Pura Vida?
