Two late-night spots coming to downtown... first up and most notable, it seems DPDough is moving into 230 Euclid Avenue where Jimmy John's used to be. According to the door they will be open until 4AM

Good move.

Phoenix Coffee on E.9th will now be open on Saturdays due to the spike in people downtown on weekends:

I'm still in pain over their W. 9th closing! This makes me feel better. The company is so big on Cleveland; they're all about making a difference locally.

Didn't Carl just sell the business recently? My dad told me something like that a few weeks ago.

Huh. I haven't heard that. Sarah is still CEO of the company, so I wonder what's up.

Churned Ice Cream in Tremont is going to open at Noon on June 1st!  This place is the second endeavors by the girls at A Cookie and a Cupcake...if their cupcakes are any indication, the ice cream should be amazing!  It's located at 11/Kenilworth.  I'm really pumped to try it out.  They are using organic milk from Hertzeberger (sp?) Dairy.

Hartzler? They are not organic. But they are local!

Myabe it's not that dairy then - but they definitely said organic

There is a Hertzberg dairy, but it is not local and as best I know is not organic. I wonder what they're using?

Zoup at 2nd & Euclid is "temporarily closed and will re-open under new management."

I wonder if it will re-open as something other than a Zoup?

Ahh.

I do love the chicken pot pie (total comfort food) on a cool fall evening.

I have been going to the Zoup at Harvard/271 recently and have seen a disturbing trend among customers... Though I usually am there more like 2 pm (i like late lunch) - when I've been there more towards the noon rush, the line might be 20 folks long - and the dining room might be mostly empty, at first- but many of those 20 people in line have already "reserved" their preferred booth or table already by leaving a paper, their phone, etc... at the vacant table to hold it for their arrival 5-10-15 minutes later. The # of people doing this is shocking... I've not run across this kind of widespread table holding for single diners  before (though sending a kid or friend to hold a table is more normal perhaps).

I remember a sign at the Long John Silvers fish chain during my childhood that went something like "captain's orders: --- get yer eats a'fore you get yer seats" - and that's the rule I wish more were living by at Zoup.

Look where the location is?  The burbs, I highly doubt someone would leave a phone unattended in the city.

Zoup was pretty bad, not upset of the switch to a local perveyor.

There is a long, long discussion thread about this on one of my foodie boards. Basically, people are split very evenly into two camps - there are no rules posted, so I can reserve a table whenver I want as soon as I enter OR you should get your food first, then wait your turn, otherwise the "flow" is disrupted and people end up standing and waiting. The previous class believes that it's stupid to stand and wait, if you see an empty table, you should grab it. The 2nd group believes it's not right/polite to do that.

Unless there are posted rules, it really is every man for himself. I am morally in the 2nd camp, but for practicality's sake, you will see me going in and leaving my coat at a table or making my husband sit there to hold the table while I go get food. You end up standing and waiting too often and wishing people would act differently doesn't give you a seat.

Beyond the morals of it, every place should have a rule that you have to get your food before you grab a table for efficiency reasons.  Otherwise there are tables sitting empty while people get their food, which is a waste of table space.

I have only been to the Zoup in Solon and I thought it was very average and overpriced.  I don't think the new owners will make the place much better as long as it's still a Zoup.

Agreed!

Not sure if this was mentioned but Taco Bell is going in Steelyard Commons.

^A site plan I saw for Steelyard also showed a Penn Station going in next to T-Mobile and 5 Guys.  I'm pretty excited about that one...

^I had to google "Penn Station" to see what that place was.  As an unfortunately regular user of Penn Station I'm trying to figure out why anyone would want to associate food with with.

^I've never had it, but a friend of mine really digs it

I think Zoup is very, very mediocre, to downright bad. Penn Station isn't much better, but they do have fresh cut fries. most of their subs are just awful.

How many people are in the camp where if no one is sitting at the table you just move their stuff to another "held" table and sit down?

There are some people who are of the camp that they don't care if there is stuff there, if there is no human body, they sit, and if the people show up and don't like it, they can sit somewhere else or sit down and join them if there is room. And others who take it further in that if there are no available tables, they will sit in open seats at someone else's table, like if there are only 1 or 2 people at a 4-top, they will sit right down with them. If it's busy enough that people are "saving" tables, it's generally busy enough that you can't move their stuff to another open table, so I think what you said is kind of n/a.

I mentioned the taco bell a few weeks back. Announcement was on their Facebook-- but seems to be taking a while. Penn station-- they are all over Cleveland. It's not good but not bad in my opinion, the fries are really good though, average sandwich- reminds me of dibellas. Just my opinion!

Excited for taco bell though! Ha!

You can always move it to the floor, or a garbage can.

^^There are a few Penn Station's in the Cleveland region, but there are exactly zero within the city.  This will be the first.  And next time you go get the cheesesteak and add the banana peppers.  You won't be disappointed.

There is more than zero in the city. There is one on West 117th Street across the street from Home Depot.

There are 19 of them in the region.

If you guys were lucky enough to ever have a real east coast sub, you could never feel the same about Subway, Penn Station, quiznos, etc. Even the franchised (bastardized) Jersey Mikes is a major letdown.

I would put the sandwiches at Gentile's in Old Brooklyn up against anything.

I would put the sandwiches at Gentile's in Old Brooklyn up against anything.

That's the first I've ever heard of it. I'd be more than willing to check them out. However, if they put salad dressing on a sub I will hurl it into the street.

I see we have some Penn Station haters and east coast sub snobs.  Settle down boys.  Penn Station does a respectable cheesesteak, IMHO.  I've had cheesesteaks in Philly and, frankly, I've never been impressed.  Maybe I "just don't get it."

I thought that Penn Station on W117th was technically in Lakewood.  So excuse me, there is exactly one Penn Station within the city limits of Cleveland.

You're excused.

I agree completely about the cheesesteaks in Philly.... meh

Penn Station is awesome. I'm lucky to live near one. I'm surprised you've never heard of the sandwich joint, Strap.

Granted, when I think of Penn Station in New York City, I still think of this....

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

^^Yeah, sadly that's no longer what the name conjures in my head :(

From their web site, looks like no locations in the states I spend time in these day.  Subs aren't really in my dining rotation though.

Im not really a Sub guy either. In fact I had my first Subway sandwich this past fall at one of the Euclid Ave locations. I cant understand why those are so popular (arent there like 5 of them now on Euclid Ave in downtown-CSU ?).

Now cheesesteaks, I dig those. I've had a ton of them in Philly since I spent many summers there growing up at my aunt and uncle's. That ad for Penn Station that KJP posted is enticing.

Btw, Potbelly's 515 Euclid store opens Wednesday June 6, per the sign on the door today.

I love Penn Station, it's probably my favorite sub sandwich.  A part of me died inside when Cedar Center North was torn down and the only Penn State in the eastern inner-ring suburbs was moved out to Mayfield Heights.

Jimmy John's isn't bad, but it's a completely different sub sandwich.  Subway is terrible, I just won't eat it anymore.  Quizno's is just...blah.  I used to like Blimpie, but only because they had a buffalo chicken sub that was really good.

Anyone know what's going on with Tomo on W 9th Street in the Warehouse District.  Saw a bunch of people meeting around a table inside yesterday, but other than that, seems like nothing has been happening for weeks.

Potbelly's invitation only warm opening is Tuesday the 5th of June.  I'll post a review Tuesday afternoon.

^Interested to hear about it.

I looked back in this thread and I wrote in an April 3 post that there was some activity around there (back in early April).

I myself haven’t really seen anything except for the owner (Lucic?) go in and out a couple times.

Crain's edition this week has stories on new interest in opening downtown restaurants - due to increased # of residents especially, plus existing/new office workers (not a casino/mart-slanted article) - and specifically notes more lunch-time places like Cleveland Pickle, Potbelly, potential Five Guys interest, etc...

Also a story about local chains branching out - the biggest news being a Melt in Columbus likely in next year and in Akron within 2 years - but not a mention of downtown location, which many had hoped for. The Flip Side people also confirm a Summer 2013 FEB opening for that burger place, but also note a Mexican restuarant for "the Flats" (I assume FEB) they'll be opening called Dos Tequilas... Don't remember hearing about that - or do I?

Which U.S. City Has the Hottest Food-Truck Scene?

By Lauren Bloomberg

It’s become a phenomenon - food served from roving street vendors whose every stop and turn are tracked by websites and promoted through Twitter. Their lines can run city blocks and turn an average gourmand into an obsessed bite-searcher. The food-truck scene is different in every city. In Chicago, trucks are illegal, and prospective vendors have to find loopholes to run the town. However, in Boston, they’re welcomed with open arms. New York City’s cops spend taxpayers' bucks chasing around illegally parked outposts.
