August 8, 201212 yr Are there any old school luncheonettes left downtown? I remember there being a few still in the 1990s, but not sure if they're still around.
August 8, 201212 yr Isn't there still one by CSU? I remember it always being closed when I was on campus, but it looked as though it was still in business.
August 8, 201212 yr oh yeah we all ate at red a long time back i think shortly after it opened. an excellent steakhouse - glad to hear they are doing well and expanding downtown.
August 8, 201212 yr I'm not a big steak eater and I've never eaten at Red, but from what I've heard the place has a sterling reputation. I do think that location is a bit, um, "interesting" for such a restaurant, but it will add even more life to that strip so that's great news!
August 8, 201212 yr ^^Sweet, that's one of the ones I remember. Looking at googlemaps, looks like there's still a place on Huron in the old Halles parking garage too, though it now has a different name.
August 8, 201212 yr We happen to be going to Red for our anniversary next week. I would say I'd report back, but my food experience isn't all that well received here so I will keep mum.
August 8, 201212 yr i think you should ROCK your review right here. and i am not a man who takes his capital letters lightly ;)
August 8, 201212 yr R&R, start a restaurant review thread in urban bar. I think its needed So, is this building directly adjacent to E.4ht, or is there another building in between. (yep, too lazy to google map it :) )
August 8, 201212 yr Are you familiar with Chinato clevechinola? If so, it's the building directly east of that.
August 8, 201212 yr +1 for a restaurant review thread, but it seems more appropriate here on restaurants, yadda than urbanbar, no?
August 8, 201212 yr I've had the occasion to eat at Red a couple of times. The steaks are good. I don't think they're the best, but good. The prices are what you'd expect for a high end steakhouse - astronomical. I'd say better than Flemings, not as good as Ruth's Chris (and before you jump down my throat, yes, I know RC was/ is a national chain, but I don't care. There was something about those steaks coming out sizzling in a plate of butter that I loved. Plus their service was fantastic). I'm a little biased, though, as I'm kind of burnt out on steak houses. I find it hard to justify spending the prices I have to pay to get a hunk of beef that I can cook just as well at home. It should do very well there, though, as it's become one of the places where the pretty people hang out on the eastside. I'm only allowed in with my wife.
August 8, 201212 yr I think that the senior mods would rather something like that go in Urbanbar. Mods, if you disagree, feel free to move or tell me to and I will move it.
August 8, 201212 yr +1 for a restaurant review thread, but it seems more appropriate here on restaurants, yadda than urbanbar, no? Well, the description topic is "Reviews & articles of local spots and postings of social events, arts, festivals, etc." So the thread probably does belong in Restaurants, Local Events, & Entertainment, but it should be a seperate thread. Seperating news from opinion.
August 8, 201212 yr ^I wish you and the other mods keeping these threads separate :) I think the mix of news and reviews here has actually worked pretty well, but will happily comply with whatever you guys think is best.
August 8, 201212 yr ^ perfect. although its seems like it goes w/o saying, still it might be good in your lead-in to note or remind folks (like me!) the thread is for ohio-only establishments. that said, imo comparisons of ohio dining experiences to elsewhere are always welcome in any review.
August 8, 201212 yr I agree. I would rather not restrict it to Ohio, but I guess we need to, given the location for the thread. If there is enough interest in "other" reviews, I can start another thread in urban bar. That's likely to get less posts anyway (though I have a couple I can add for there too, ha).
August 8, 201212 yr one other thing i just thought of (while sitting forever in the backed up dermatologists office ughh!) is that i would love it if people added a few photos to their reviews if they wanted to. i started a thread for that that noone seems into, but it might be more appropriate to integrate foodie-related photos with reviews anyway.
August 8, 201212 yr I have pix with some of mine, but the threads will just get really long if we do that. I dunno.
August 9, 201212 yr ^^Sweet, that's one of the ones I remember. Looking at googlemaps, looks like there's still a place on Huron in the old Halles parking garage too, though it now has a different name. Huron Square Deli, or something like that. Also, there is Sammy's Grill in the Holiday Inn Express Building. If you are coming in off Euclid it is past the check in desk. Cash Only, though I think all the one's we've mentioned are too.
August 9, 201212 yr lakewood's barroco grill has state's top sandwich, says food network mag Food Network Magazine has crowned Barroco Grill's delicious Chorizo Arepa the top sandwich in all of Ohio. In a feature titled "50 States, 50 Sandwiches," the Lakewood eatery gets high praise for its Colombian street food. "Arepas -- thick-stuffed corn tortillas -- have come to Ohio, and locals rave about this chorizo-stuffed one," reads the entry. In an item titled, "Good road-trip eats," LaBan writes, “Noodlecat, the Cleveland ramen mash-up from chef Jonathon Sawyer, one of the more inventive and personal takes on the ramen trend, infused with good Midwestern ingredients: steamed buns (tempura-fried walleye!), noodle bowls with spicy Ohio corn chowder, matzo balls and brisket.” http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/inthenews/phillynoodlecatluv080912.aspx?utm_source=VerticalResponse&utm_medium=Email&utm_term=sawyer%27s+noodlecat+gets+mad+props+from+philly+writer&utm_content={Email_Address}&utm_campaign=Audacity+of+Spirit
August 10, 201212 yr Black Pig on W25 slated to open next Wed: Black Pig restaurant to open Wednesday in Ohio City: Restaurant Row http://www.cleveland.com/dining/index.ssf/2012/08/black_pig_restaurant_to_open_w_1.html#incart_river_default
August 11, 201212 yr ^ i dont get that at all, shouldnt a place that emphasizes brunch items like croque monsieur and lunch items like bahn mi have earlier regular business hours? oh wait heres the deal: After Wednesday's opening the restaurant will operate from 4 to 11 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday; Friday 4 p.m. To midnight; noon to midnight Saturday (maybe they will add lunch m-f later?) In September the restaurant will open for brunch; until then, dinner will be served 4 to 9 p.m.
August 11, 201212 yr Cleveland Pickle decided to open up shop on a Saturday this week, so I finally got to try it. It was delicious and huge - I still have half of my sandwich to eat later! They said they were gonna be open a few more random Saturdays coming up - I presume they will announce it on their Facebook page like they did this weekend!
August 14, 201212 yr Cleveland Pickle decided to open up shop on a Saturday this week, so I finally got to try it. It was delicious and huge - I still have half of my sandwich to eat later! They said they were gonna be open a few more random Saturdays coming up - I presume they will announce it on their Facebook page like they did this weekend! Cool! I'm a frequent customer considering they're right downstairs (er, down the elevator) from my office. Their prices are high but you get a huge sandwich, like you say. Except I always feel the need to eat the whole thing because I don't want to stash the leftovers in our shared refrigerator and then in my bag on bus or train ride home. But I'll probably visit the Pickle today considering the rainy weather. August 14, 201212 yr In addition to their just-announced Red downtown, the owners of Moxie and Red are apparently seeking approval for additional parking so they can open a third, Asian-themed, restaurant at their already successful suburban office park location. Their restaurants are tasty - but that location, especially when their parking lots lights are mostly out as was the case all winter, is more than a bit unappealing...
August 14, 201212 yr I agree. In the past year I have finally been able to try both Moxie and Red, and they were both great, but the location was just terrible. The more I got to know that area in the past year, I have come to realize that nearly all of the east side restaurants that I have always heard about are in really horrible and ugly locations.. Like Giovanni's..

Did I miss the location somewhere of the Downtown one?
August 16, 201212 yr There's a halloween store going into the spot in Mentor that was pegged for Melt. I suspect that means a post November 1 opening.
August 16, 201212 yr Im pretty sure its the space next to melt, which has become a halloween store the past few years.
August 17, 201212 yr From 1925 Bank Vault to Swanky Eatery: The Story of Cleveland’s Crop Bistro David Robert Weible 1:51 PM ET A long summer weekend finds me escaping the stifling D.C. heat back in my hometown of Cleveland and in the thick of some innovative preservation work at Crop Bistro & Bar, the dual-purpose restaurant and research and development kitchen of chef and restaurateur, Steve Schimoler, in the heart of the historic Ohio City neighborhood.... http://www.theatlanticcities.com/design/2012/08/1925-bank-vault-swanky-eatery-story-clevelands-crop-bistro/2991/
August 17, 201212 yr ^ very, very cool positive article...and rightly so! this older one below it about the may co. maybe not so much so, although they put a positive spin on it! http://m.theatlanticcities.com/commute/2012/02/historic-buildings-get-new-life-parking-lot/1260/ seems like cle has fans at atlantic cities!
August 19, 201212 yr Just a note- the new university circle panera is opening on Tuesday. This place looks very cool, with a two story dining room.

How loud is it? I don't see too many sound-deadening features. I hope it's not like Stone Mad which is so loud I won't go there anymore unless I can eat outside. August 20, 201212 yr I think the cavernous design of crop is both a positive and a negative. When you walk in you're like ooh, it's beautiful. And then you try to talk to the person across the table from you. When it's very busy, it's even worse. JMO.
August 20, 201212 yr Crop is a stunning space... I've only been there on crowded nights - and it feels somewhat empty then, in its hugeness.. Can only imagine how it feels on slow nights...
August 20, 201212 yr ^^I have never had a problem talking with people at my table at Crop even when crowded. This actually surprised me given the space. I thought there would be problems but, again, I have never experienced it (unlike Dante's where I experienced noise issues on both occasions I had dinner there...it has been a while and don't know if they have corrected the problem).
August 20, 201212 yr much like Dredgers Union, they took a shot in an unproven area for their market. I think the Hipp would have worked out well in say, Detroit Shoreway or Waterloo.
August 21, 201212 yr has anyone tried old carolina bbq? i think its a bit of a chain, i saw one in akron or canton. is the 'cue good? do they have both carolina styles of bbq? thx if you know. if you have any better bbq recs i'd like to hear them. fyi - i had lots of bbq around georgia recently and was suprised it was meh to just ok.
August 21, 201212 yr I have heard generally good things about Old Carolina though havent' been myself. I've heard very good things about Fat Casual in Macedonia.
August 21, 201212 yr Cleveland Pickle will be open again this Saturday from 12-4! They have also added outdoor seating, with a great view of the aging plywood around the still-silent Schofield Building next door.
