I noticed a sign in the old Moe's across from CSU.  It says "Burgers 2 Beer" opening soon. Seems to be one in Mayfield and should do nicely there.  http://www.b2bcleveland.com/

Noted at least 2 weeks ago. Very excited, CSU will have a nice bar in the campus' busiest area. Outdoor patio too

^ yeah thats great news --- so fitting because there are a lot of columbians and south americans living on the westside.

A little Colombian flavor in Lakewood.

Barroco, the one that started it all, has been on Madison in Lakewood for a substantial amount of time.

Helvetica is an off-shoot of Barroco.

I was going to post this in the crime thread, but I see that got shut down as it was heading down a slippery slope.

Anyway, I just saw this Tweet from Dim and Den Sum:

HodgesCleveland (Hodges Cleveland)

Only took 30 minutes to locate our truck with the help of A fan who saw it parked In central Cleveland! @DimAndDenSum will be home soon

Apparently, their truck was stolen and recovered at E. 46th St. and Central Ave., but it was stripped.

That's CRAZY!

I was looking at the hours for the downtown Subways after walking by the one on East 9th and seeing how busy it was at 8pm last night. According to their website, there's a new Subway coming to the Southworth Building. I assume this will be in the old Sushi 86 spot.

Also, I noticed many Subways downtown are open until 10pm. I'm not a big Subway eater, but it's nice to see places staying open after 6pm.

That is where Mirch Masala was supposed to go, but would not surprise me if it became a Subway.  Especially seen as that spot always had some restaurant "coming soon".  Also, that would explain why it appears there is finally construction happening there.

now thats a damn shame if its a subway sub shop because the chinese/indian 'mirch' mixup is one of the best cuisines ever, especially if you like spicy foods. google mirch and check out the menu of anyplace that comes up -- it will make you hungry instantly! so if no go there hopefully it opens somewhere else downtown.

Subway may not be taking the Mirch Masala spot.  There are two storefronts in the 2013 Ontario building and both had lights on this morning with the standard redevelopment paper up on the windows.  Would not surprise me either way, but hopefully something happens as that spot has been empty for almost 2 years I think now.

^ I believe it is going to be an Indian cafe.

I'm not surprised about Prime Rib Steakhouse either. If anyone wanted to make something work in that location, it would have to be something you can't get anywhere else, and have valet parking.

^I think the location can work, but you must serve lunch there and have some way of drawing people in the evenings.  I thought the House of Cues was actually a really good fit for the location because they had a decent lunch, hosted corporate events in their private room, and drew people in that live downtown and want to play pool.  It was also a low key escape from W6th for some on Friday and Saturday nights...

But the owner of the House of Cues was doing back flips when he sold the place so I guess he made out pretty well.

In part of Joseph-Beth space...

Chloe's Kitchen Diner, the first of what might be five or six Glazen-affiliated restaurants to open on or near Waterloo within in the next year, is set to be open for business tomorrow (!). It’s official. Alan Glazen, along Randy and Linda Kelly, his talented partners from ABC/XYZ Tavern and Ontario Café, have signed a lease to take the reins of the bar and bocce courts at the Slovenian Workmen’s Home on Waterloo Rd. This exciting move signals another beam of light for “Operation Light Switch,” Glazen’s development vision for the north Collinwood neighborhood ...

Re: The new brewery for Legacy. I am pretty sure that it got scrapped. The former Joseph-Beth space was filled w/ signage about it coming soon, back in the early summer. The signage has recently disappeared and the space is dead empty.

Also - Myxx at Cedar-Fairmount shutdown. I hope the next tenant can utilize the gigantic space better than a gigantic dancefloor.

Also - World of Beer signage is up in downtown Lakewood, across from Melt and next door to Eddie & Eddie's. That entire block is full of new retail/food/bar and imo is the hottest new area in NE Ohio right now as there is also a Panera, Menchie's, Five Guys, Quaker Steak, Deagan's, Roots Cafe, Chipotle, Jimmy John's, Buyback$, Exchange, Aladdin's, Robek's, Pacer's, Rozi's and it's new patio, and like 50 other places that already existed or are very recent - so many I can't keep up w/ it. Talk about urban developments - downtown Lakewood is on fire! Grocery and Pharmacy: Marc's and Drug Mart, check. Bank: check. Post office: check. New library: check, coffee shop: Caribou and Roots, check. Public transportation: Direct bus route, check. Book shop: ...needed to complete the neighborhood! Such a damn shame the spot where Trader Joe's/Gold's Gym was once thought to be going is now becoming a gigantic Get Go gas station (Detroit/Bunts). Because then, I'd move back to Lakewood for the rest of my life!

^ As far as Lakewood goes I hope some quality stores fill in the blocks between Summit and Arthur. Jammy Buggars is quality and Merry Arts just  put a really nice patio.

Granite City Brewery, in former Joseph-Beth space, was formally announced last week via press release and on Legacy site (and above)

What is going on in downtown Lakewood is VERY appealing. There's no spot like it anywhere else in the region... I'm a bit jealous (says the eastsider...).  Deagan's is a fave, among other great choices. The blue INA building that houses Panera is probably my favorite building in NEO.

Tell me about it.  We finally settled on purchasing on the east side (after being out of the area for nearly 15 years), but previously lived walking distance to downtown Lakewood.

The East side has its places, but I really have to put alot of thought into it...  The West side seems to have many more great choices (We need a Deagans on Lee!).

Went to Accent on Friday. The space is amazing, absolutely love the look and feel. Definitely visually impressive. All of our food and drinks were fantastic as well. Very unique, hope others have the same great experience.

Thanks for the pics and the review!  I was going to ask if anyone had been there.  I hope it catches on and does well.

Cedar Creek Grille opens at La Place on Wednesday... This is a locally owned spot, though from the founders of Bravo/Brio. Early pics show the work/$ they've put into it (they've been working probably 5-6 months on this - including weekends over the past few months).

Also - anybody see B Spot's announcement today of (crazy) new whole restaurant (not just bar) Happy Hour 3-6 Monday-Friday? $5 All burgers, $1 Lola fries, $2 brats/bologna, $3 beers, etc.. Not sure the impetus behind this, or why the somewhat long HH hours and extra-low prices. By all accounts, these places do real well - I've rarely been there anytime it's not 50%+ full - even at off hours, and usually a wait during dinner, etc... - but it would seem to point to true lunch, dinner and nothing in between business.  But for the whole restaurant at these prices? Does that cheapen the overall product if you arrive at 3:10 and realize, even in the dining room, you could've had 50% off your burger and 75% off fries 10 minutes earlier, even with kids in tow who wouldn't qualify for normal Happy Hour? Hmmmm....

I think it's a smart promotion to start as we head into winter, when people are more likely to quickly go home and hide in front of the doritos bag and the TV. Or is that just my home? This woudl seriously lead me to stop by there with my kid on the way home from school and attempt a meal at a restaurant with him on a night I don't have anything ready for us to quickly reheat and eat and don't feel like cooking.

No its called Brand extension.  You get people into your restaurant who would normally not come or would like to come but cannot afford it.  This gives them a chance to sample the brand.

Hey, I think the B Spot deal is a great one, but would still have been great from if only 3-5 pm Mon-Wed, for just bar patrons, with a few select burgers $5, with fries $2.50 and so on.  With some variations, that's how Lolita does it (Lola has never had a Happy Hour to my knowledge.. Anyone?) It's the scope and the retails that surprised - but definitely will get people in the door.

I would think they've done research to figure out what they can spend.

Maybe, but I think you're overestimating the research budget of indie restaurants.  Usually, they use their professional judgement about their clientele and their cost structure more than research, per se.

isnt this the research findings for those kinds of happy hour deals? --> salty foods=drinking & alcohol sales=$

Yeah but how much can they really be making on alcohol when they're selling Dogfish Head 90 Minute pints for $3?  That's cheaper than you can buy it in the store!

It seems that Google has updated its Zagat ratings to the 2013 edition, which is funny since the Zagat website still shows last year's ratings.  Crop went down to 26 from 28, but many restaurants moved up, including Giovanni's (to 29) and my personal favorite, L'Albatros, to 28.  Also a nice surprise was that Ty Fun was Zagat rated for the first time, and debuted at a 28 rating!

^ no that makes sense because google fairly recently bought zagat -- for this many moneys:

Haha, I know that, but I figured they would still keep the Zagat website up to date.

good question, i dk what google is going to do with the website, i dont think they do yet either. i did read they are going to keep publishing the guides because thats where the real zagat brand money still is believe it or not. old people lol!

Depends what they pay for the keg.  They should get just a bit less than 120 pints out of that keg (15 gallons - some loss during keg changes).  That's $360-ish.  High end micro kegs like that might run up to $200 or so, but I don't know what 90 minute costs exactly.  They're already paying rent, utilities, salaries, debt service, etc, so they are squeezing extra profit out of those costs by bringing people in during a time they would probably be twiddling their thumbs otherwise. They could cut maybe a little labor by having people come in later for the dinner shift, but I don't think it would save much because it would mostly be half min wage front of the house they would cut.

According to a source inside the planning department, the Hollywood Video on Lorain near W 41 will becoming a McDonalds.  It is still in the beginning stages of drawings and approvals.

Emperor's Palace in Cleveland gets Rockwell Avenue cooking again

Published: Thursday, November 08, 2012

AsiaTown might not get the attention of Cleveland's other entertainment districts. Activity is another story.

It's one of Cleveland's most vibrant areas, boasting some 20 restaurants, bakeries and markets where you can get a taste of Asia.

Check out the most recent addition. And not just because it rolls out a wide-ranging menu and a tasty dim sum.

Emperor's Palace -- 2136 Rockwell Ave., Cleveland, 216-861-9999 -- is reclaiming the heart of old Chinatown.

Great newz from article:

It's part of a larger plan by investors from Zhongshan, China, to revive Rockwell as a family-friendly destination. Two more restaurants and a museum are planned.

nice -- zongshan is a prime setting on the mouth of the pearl river, right next to macau and hongkong, so hopefully that brings a interesting mix of investments and cantonese food.

looks like "toast" in the detroit-shoreway neighborhood is gearing up for a december opening.  very excited about this.

I have some foodie friends who have gone to Emperor's palace twice now. It seems when the dishes are on, they're very good, but they are about 50% in terms of success rates of the dishes. Maybe they're still working out the kinks.

Union Depot Taverne to open in Berea's old Pufferbelly spot:

Restaurant Row

Published: Wednesday, November 14, 2012, 6:00 AM

Updated: Wednesday, November 14, 2012, 6:06 AM

It's been a long four years since the old restaurant at the intersection of Front and Depot streets in Berea closed.

For almost 30 years, the spot -- historically, the Victorian Gothic building is called the Berea Union Depot -- was known as Pufferbelly, adored by railroad lovers who could dine there and enjoy a drink while watching trains chug past. For a short time it operated as the Station.

But bridge construction on Front Street closed access to the wonderful former railroad station house. When road crews finally completed the city's handsome new railroad overpass, the building, its 1923 Pullman car, patio seating and its charming architectural details could be resurrected.

Finally, the lights will turn back on. At 4 p.m. Tuesday, Union Depot Taverne opens its doors.

According to Jibaro food trucks website, they have opened a pizza place at 14210 Madison.  Awesome.  Quietly Madison is becoming a underground food street.  Not your fine dining (sans players), but chill places where you can grab unique eats.  Angelos, Tacos Tantos, Barrocco, Mahalls 20 lanes, Jibaro Pizza, etc.  Would like to see those bike lanes on Madison to be discussed at December 3rd Lakewood City Council meeting.

So Jonathon Sawyers new restaurant will be called Trentina?  Has this been mentioned?

^I don't think so- thanks for the info!  Cute name- I think it's kind of an Italian pun.  I'm seriously excited for this place.

But will it be at Uptown, as originally thought, or elsewhere based on Sawyer's recent " looking for locations" comment?

Indeed that was where i saw it.

Did goodfellas close? I can't figure out what's the deal with that place

The Subway coming soon sign is finally up. It's on the left side while Mirch Masala is on the right. Wonder if it will ever open haha.

word on the street is that the cleveland chophouse & brewery will be closed at the end of the year.

^ ouch. Although i have never eaten there, it has a nice presence in the neighborhood.  I think getting these apartments open for leasing needs to speed up.  The residential population downtown is going to sustain alot of business down there.

This is pretty sad news. I live right there and constantly take people there. I've never had a bad experience, and although a bit pricier, it is good food. Bummer.

It kind of makes me wonder what exactly the plan is.  WE just keep loading up on restaurants, eventually the concepts overlap.  SO here comes Red the Steakhouse, to take the place? I feel like there isnt a plan.  I applaud the businesses for taking coming into the downtown area...i just hope there is diversifying and an increase in a critical mass of people real soon.

Don't understand what you mean by "plan". You expect all of the restaurant owners to get together and agree not to enter into a market because there may be another steakhouse there?
