Apparently Sammy's was the vendor servicing the Case Club in Severance Hall, which is now closed as well until they find a new vendor. I didn't even know this place existed, tbh, I'm kind of looking forward to checking it out once they re-open.

I really miss the restaurant on West 10th.  I know they were still doing catering out of that location but I have not been there in years.  The food was always good but the atmosphere (decor) and incredible views of the river are what were the draw for me.  If they are going totally out of business I hope somebody with great restaurant credentials will take over the space and open it up as a restaurant again.

Agree!

sad to hear, but that was a lonnng run. no doubt he could use a break or retire.

Marigold Catering is holding a job fair for the displaced Sammy's workers. I think that's pretty nice. Lucy's Sweet Surrender has also offered to interview/hire bakers.

^ great to hear things like that.

something fun -- i had to go to soho yesterday.

there was a beiber sighting and kids were screaming down broadway. that was pretty funny.

but i stopped in the cleveland restaurant. very nice comfortable place.

bruell's new burger shack dynomite debuts in star plaza at playhousesquare

Thursday, August 08, 2013

Zack Bruell used to watch PlayhouseSquare office workers sit outside at Star Plaza and eat sandwiches in the park. He thought, They could be my customers. Now, thanks to Dynomite, a new fast-casual burger shack in the Star Plaza kiosk, many of them are.

During its first week, Dynomite frequently had lines 30-people deep and ran out of hamburger buns by 3 p.m. (don't worry, they ordered more). Bruell hopes this is an omen.

I not found of the way this article was written.

You can think of Dynomite as a kind of Zack Bruell burger clearinghouse. Modeled after the legendary Shake Shack in New York City

Is this true?  As Shake Shack is terrible.  The Ice Cream is OK, the burgers plain.  It's just a place to congregate.

I'm surprised they are allowed to get a liquor license

^^It's comment on the format and setting, not the quality of the food.

I'm surprised they are allowed to get a liquor license

Agreed, everyone would have an open container. What are the boundaries?

it will be fine. people can handle it. it is surprizing they got one tho. great idea for that spot.

Is there not a fenced in patio space?

By the way, here is the web site.  Menu looks great: http://www.dynomitecleveland.com/

That makes sense, there must be fencing.

Dang, why did I look at that menu so far from lunchtime!

now this is really exciting and ringing my foodie bells!

Ohio City lands 'Palace of Fermentation' food retail and production center next year

By Joe Crea, The Plain Dealer

on August 06, 2013 at 12:51 PM, updated August 06, 2013 at 1:27 PM

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland's market district will gain a major food shopping and tourism destination next year, when restaurateur Sam McNulty and his business partners open The Palace of Fermentation in the old Culinary Arts Building at 1849 West 24th St. at Bridge St. in Ohio City.

All products made and sold in the building are foods produced through natural fermentation. That accounts for a fairly broad swath of favorites, from beers and distilled spirits to cheeses, cured meats and pickles.

Cibreo, Red the Steakhouse in Cleveland progressing to fall openings: Restaurant Row

CLEVELAND – Two of Northeast Ohio's most successful restaurateurs have splashy new restaurants heading for downtown Cleveland: Scott Kuhn’s Cibreo Italian Kitchen, 1438 Euclid Ave. on PlayhouseSquare, and Brad Friedlander’s Red The Steakhouse, 417 Prospect Ave., around the corner from East Fourth Street.

Neither spot will open until fall: the respective debuts are projected for September and October. Given the high profile stature of both restaurants and their operators, an update seems in order.

For those unacquainted, a few words about the restaurant groups these newbies will be born into. Under the Red Restaurant Group banner, Friedlander and his business partner, executive chef Jonathan Bennett, operate Moxie The Restaurant in Beachwood and three other Red restaurants, in Beachwood, Boca Raton, Florida and that state's trendy South Beach area. Kuhn heads the Driftwood Restaurant Group, which runs Hodges (with celebrity chef Chris Hodgson) and Washington Place Bistro in Cleveland, Welshfield Inn in Troy Township, Orchard House in Brunswick, and other properties.

The two restaurants under construction will have prominent addresses:

WHAT'S COOKING -- KATHY AMES CARR

Downtown Cleveland adds to its restaurant collection

Blog entry: August 20, 2013, 8:07 am    |    Author: KATHY AMES CARR

Restaurants come and go, but continued growth in downtown Cleveland's residential and office markets suggests the urban core has the appetite to support a recent healthy net gain of retailers and eateries.

According to Downtown Cleveland Alliance, 48 retail stores have opened in the last 18 months, with 36 being restaurants. The market this year alone will see a net gain of 23 shops and dining establishments once Driftwood Restaurant Group's Cibreo Italian Kitchen and Rothschild Farms open later this year at PlayhouseSquare. Another 22 retail shops and eateries are planned through 2014.

“Downtown Cleveland has been a dining destination, with internationally acclaimed restaurants attracting tourists and locals,” said Gina Morris, director of marketing and public relations for Downtown Cleveland Alliance. “As our large- scale investments continue to come online and our residential market continues to explode, more amenities and a variety of restaurants are opening.”

Where's the pizza hut going?

Also, China Sea Express is filling the empty storefront next to Bon Apetit on Euclid in the Campus District.  The construction permits are posted in the window and I talked to the operator of Sung's House in Playhouse Square who confirmed this.

^ In addition to restoring much of the interior, Was is replacing the gloomy glass-block front windows with real see-through glass.

Really if wish all glass block could be destroyed immediately!

Are you associated with this?

::full disclosure::  yes, this is our place.  we've been keeping it under wraps until we've gotten closer the opening.  happy to answer any and all questions.

If you can snag Kona Brewing's Koko Brown or Pipeline Porter on draft, that would be great. If you can somehow get Maui Brewing's Toasted Coconut Porter (can or draft), I will have a new favorite place to grab a beer, and you will have my permission to violate every forum rule in existence :)

maui isn't distributed in OH yet, but we'll definitely be all over it if it does.  we should have the pipeline porter here by the time we officially open next month, and koko brown will be out after the holidays.  we currently have big wave, fire rock, and longboard on draft, and the wailua wheat is headed out for the season.

look for us mid-late sept to be open.

No qusetions. we'll be there!

...And lamps from the Kon-Tiki? We'll definitely be there

Good Luck!

Really excited about this.  Wish I could have been around to see the Kon Tiki Bar at Stouffers.  Here's a website that has some images from the lounge.

http://www.tikiroom.com/tikicentral/bb/viewtopic.php?topic=32516&forum=2

i've seen the doors first hand, and the photos don't do them justice...they're absolutely gorgeous.  their owner has been incredibly generous and helpful in our attaining artifacts for the bar.  in addition to lamps and bamboo that lined the walls of the kon tiki, we have chairs from the chin tiki in detroit (closed in 1980), chairs from the historic mai kai in florida (still in operation), as well as some other cool stuff currently in negotiation.

we're taking a lot of pride in acquiring, preserving, and utilizing these pieces as they contain so much history.  we're super excited about sharing it with the rest of cleveland and can't wait!

Nice!  That's a really sharp storefront. And looks like a useful dining option for the UC/LI area.  Thanks for the photos!

Michael Symon's Lolita is now on OpenTable... A pretty big development for a restaurant that, due to small size and big popularity, can be a very difficult reservation to get close-in to the date desired.. Turned down many times when calling on the spur of the moment. This should make it much easier to plan.

Now if only Momocho would OpenTable it...

I feel like the new place in Lakewood, El Carnicero, is almost identical to Momocho, and bigger so probably easier to get into? I don't particularly care for either place, so maybe I'm not appreciating any nuanced differences.

wow is that ever unexpected and exciting news about porco's new polynesian tiki bar. very cool. that article was hilarious, he obviously has the right idea about how to do it as a modern bar. i am so there.

and the chutney rolls front looks absolutely stunning and sharp. not to mention very inviting.

together both of those would make for a great dinner and drinks evening!

From Craigslist, This has to be some kind of scam, right?  I googled wammerjammers and the chef's name and came up with nothing.  Is someone just trying to get a bunch of busty gals to show up at Playhouse Square?  Very weird.

Wammerjammers----Now Hiring!

Chef Babu Pratt-Witkowski, famous and hilarious winner of Canada's "Hoser Chef SuperStar 2012"

is coming to you, Cleveland, to open a much needed Ohio location of his world famous pleasure dome...

WAMMERJAMMERS Topless Burgers 4 Men.

Now Hiring servers only at this time.

Please send stats and pics (recent only please). Augmented knockers OK, but au naturel prefered (Chef Babu's preference).

Or come in person to the lobby of the Hanna Building, Playhouse Square, Downtown Cleveland, Ohio, USA, with your glossy headshots and appropriate photos. Ask for Tony G. Inquire at reception desk, 10AM-4PM. Will be opening in the Hanna, 14th street.

Hope to see you there, Cleveland!!!

I couldn't find anything, either.  Forward it to the Playhouse Square Foundation, they should know what is going on in their property.

come on, seriously? It's obviously fake.

That's awesome. Never underestimate the creativity of a horny guy....

The Langston at Cleveland State campus getting two new eateries: Restaurant Row

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland State University students and staff, and other workers in the area of Chester Avenue at East 22nd Street will find a couple more places to grab a meal or snack by year's end. Wrapz Pita Bar and Lemonberry Frozen Yogurt will open in The Langston, a mixed-use residential complex near the university campus.

Both businesses are new to downtown Cleveland. The complex already includes a Pizza Hut restaurant.

The Langston at Cleveland State campus getting two new eateries: Restaurant Row

Nothing too exciting to me. The picture for Wrapz does not even look appetizing. Processed ham chunks with uncooked vegetables. It looks like someone had some grocery store party trays and they took the leftovers and put them in a pita shell.

^ i will never eat at either of these, but i still find it exciting.  These are college kids demanded restaurants that will give Chester more of a college feel.  Not as big of dining news as it is Cleveland State news

Hi all - not sure if this is the right place to post, but a good friend of mine owns a small restaurant in the IMG Building, and apparently Oswald recently moved out of the building and that was like 70% of her customer base. She is going through her savings like crazy trying to stay open and knows of no plans for any new tenants to come in.

She has owned her own business for almost 20 years. If nobody else is coming into that building she is going to have to close the business and get a job somewhere.

Does anyone have any insight into plans for new tenants going into the IMG building? Either way it would be very helpful information for her so she can try to plan accordingly.

^ what's the restaurant like? Heck I'll drop by to support it.

It's a small cafe serving wraps and salads and such. Just the regular stuff - egg salad, roast beef, etc. The chef/owner has a personal emphasis on raw/vegan food as well and makes her own line of kale chips as well as having raw/vegan options every day, and has a juice cleanse side business as well.

Anna is the nicest person like ever. She has a good selection of chips and drinks to go with the sandwiches, a lot better than most cafes.

Edited to add: I really appreciate if people want to support her, but even if all of us who work in the area could go there once a week, it wouldn't make up for the volume she lost, so I'm trying to find out if anyone knows if there are potential new tenants there.
