LOL not uncomfortable, inconvenient. I would have gone one time...not had cash...and never again because I never carry cash.

Well no one here would be.

But even if 25% of potential customers are, for whatever reasons, that's enough to make the difference for a new place.  It was also a mistake to call it "trendy", in a town that is allergic to that word even when it embraces the concept.

Two late-night spots coming to downtown... first up and most notable, it seems DPDough is moving into 230 Euclid Avenue where Jimmy John's used to be. According to the door they will be open until 4AM

I think the biggest problem is that not many people seemed excited of the concept (or even sure what they were going for).  Also, that part of Ohio City is off most people's radar right now for anything other than residential, so unless you knew about the place and were specifically headed there, it's unlikely anyone popped in just from passing by.

i think it would have been successful if it was a place the locals wanted to be...off the beatn path but a concept that fit the people in the neighborhood.  Locals like their own stuff that is exclusive to them.  Im not so sure i know what the concept was or wanted to be and i dont think the locals really cared that much either.

I think you nailed it.  This place was a five minute walk away that I never even thought of making.  Not compelling.

Most people need a reason to try somewhere new.  Otherwise, they will stick to the known.  That's more true in this area than some others, I suspect.  Both because of the plentiful options that already exist, and because of our nature.

Agreed, I had some of the best ice cream I've ever tasted there on Saturday! Watching it get made in front of you is pretty cool too.

You mean all 3 harsh comments out of 6 on that Scene article?:). The other 3 were positive.  It's not like it was a PD comments section where the negativity can run into the hundreds.

Helvetica on Detroit Ave in Lakewood has closed. Their hours were kind of strange, kind of like a coffee shop vibe but opening late and closing early. I don't think they ever hit a stride.

On the bright side, the sign in the window says stay tuned for a new location so that's good. And they fixed up the interior so nicely it's easy to see another cafe or restaurant filling the space.

So from the sign u believe Helvetica is finding another location? I liked them

point taken

but, wow, you really give me too much credit like Im smart or something  :-)

I was at Pour yesterday and I was really impressed. There were three (yes 3!!!) espresso flavors, and the place itself is awesomely set up. There are some nice comfy chairs as well as cool wooden ones. And the tables had plug sockets built into them so you can hang out and get some work done. Plus the people who work there are very knowledgeable and friendly. Perfect place for a cappuccino! And a great location adjacent to the always awesome Hodges and the Colossal Cupcake place.

That's what the sign said, but I can't help but think of the "remodeling" or "reopening soon" kinda signs I've seen over the years where nothing ever happened.

I liked them too. Well, I didn't like their hours.

Pour Looks like a cool place.  I'll have to go and check it out.

I heard a radio ad for Melt this morning and in it they stated that a Case Western Reserve Campus location was coming soon.  Did I miss an announcement or did I not hear the ad correctly?  The only Melt news I've heard recently is that they are opening a second Columbus location.

It’s official: Melt location to open in new university center

After months of speculation, the rumors have finally been confirmed: the famous Cleveland restaurant Melt Bar and Grilled will be coming to Case Western Reserve University’s new Tinkham Veale University Center this fall.

Melt, a gourmet grilled cheese restaurant, has won Cleveland Magazine’s Best Sandwich for the past four years, and was listed on Esquire’s One of the Best Sandwiches in America list. The new university center will be Melt’s fifth location, and its first campus spot.

“I think this is something that the Case community can really get excited about,” said Beth Kretschmar, marketing manager for Bon Appetit, CWRU’s food management company. “Melt is a local favorite, it’s a really cool concept, it’s award winning, and I just think it’s really fun.”

Yea, I really like it for a bar. I think it's a little confusing for coffee, IMO.

It's a reference to pour-over coffee, which is what Pour specializes in.

Probably the best coffee I have ever had - unfortunately, also the most expensive.

I love how Tarantino is blaming the problems on parking and winters, when everyone down here knows that La Strada has long had problems with quality, consistency, and service.

^^Even having never been there, I rolled my eyes when I read that. Great to see another space under the control of a top notch operation.

I'm guessing this space is too large/too prominent to be the sticky bun pickle project Simon hinted at a few months ago.  Curious to see the eventual format here.

Now THAT is an asshat! Reminds me of when the Cleveland Athletic Club blamed its failure to update itself on the Euclid Corridor. Meanwhile here we are six years later, the Union Club across Euclid is still going strong.

Went there once and was totally unimpressed with the food.

La Strada was TERRIBLE.

So is La Dolce Vita, IMHO. I'm excited to see what Symon brings in. It will be nice to have a more affordable Symon restaurant downtown.

Would a B-spot disappoint you guys?

A B- Spot would disappoint me. It's not that I don't like them, I just don't like one there.

Would a B-spot disappoint you guys?

Considering that there is one two blocks away at the casino...yes.

Would a B-spot disappoint you guys?

I'd definitely like something new.

I wonder if the S&P Smokehouse concept - which Symon had teased about maybe two years ago (BBQ, etc...) - or something similar - might end up there.  To even go to the level of Lolita - mid/high teens pricing for more rustic preps of some of the types of dishes at Lola - might cannibalize the Lola biz...whereas a BBQ joint would be totally different. He had also talked a pizza place at one point (to open on east side) - and that isn't replicated on the street at this point.

Maybe La Strada's Tarantino can now spend more time figuring out what to do with the Mayfield Theater in Little Italy it's reported he owns and just lets sit there...

FYI - On OpenTable, La Strada had the 4th customer worst reviews (in stars) out of the 160 or so NEO restaurants with ratings... Zocalo has the 6th worst... - when ranking by review stars on the site...

24 hour diner

(Speculation)

^Downtown sorely needs two or three 24-hr diners with reasonable prices--not a high-end place---it'd be great if that moves in. I'd like to see on around E 4th, one in the Warehouse District and one around 14th Street/21 Street.

I heard from someone today that Slyman's is opening another location, in Independence. Does anyone know anything about this?

14th has a ton of open retail spaces. I'd love to see those fill up.

Interesting.  I like some of his plates.

A friend of mine will be driving back from DC, stopping in Cleveland on the 4th of July, and staying over night Downtown. He's tried to make  reservations at most of the restaurants in Downtown, Tremont & Ohio City. Everything is booked. I thought people BBQ'd on the 4th in their back yard...or is this a normal Friday night in the restaurant scene these days in CLE?

^ tell him/her to check out Soho in Ohio City.  While they book up on weekends, I'd be surprised if they were booked up this early.

^Thanks for the tip!

It's rare that that many restaurants would be booked this (relatively) far in advance (says the far too frequent OpenTable-goer..). If your friend is actually here on the 4th and was, say, trying to make reservations on OpenTAble, then they saw what I saw.. only 41 CLE area restaurants available and 102 "booked"..

But OpenTable doesn't clearly differentiate between "booked" and "closed"... I'm guessing the majority of restaurants are closed on July 4th and are showing unavailable on OpenTable.

^My experience living Downtown and working in the restaurant industry is that it is a very quite day, and many places will be closed.

I have a lunch appointment today at 12.  Any recommendations for a good spot that we can walk in within walking distance of the Fifth Third building?
