The pub at beachwood place mall has closed after 2 1/2 years. That leaves the prime front restaurant space again maybe a seasons 52 Grill can go there now or a Cooper's hawk?? Would love to see either one of those two

It has been apparent for probably 1.5 years that the Pub wasn't cutting it. Something about this mall and this spot that make it tough for a restaurant there. Beachwood's original plan for several new restaurants in front was to make it a dining destination like many other malls are. Maggiano's seems to do OK business but space WAY too large. Cooper's Hawk in talks to go on Harvard just south of Pinecrest. Seasons 52 would need a better spot than this. If this tough restaurant spot stays as a restaurant, I am thinking a BJ's (looking for east side spot) or Yard House is more the type that needs to be there. Spot can't easily be seen from Cedar so little impulse business...

Love hearing that about Cooper'a Hawk, I like that place. I think you are right a bj's which is opening in mentor soon or yard house would be great there at pub space. Still would like to see seasons 52 somewhere though.

^You're forgetting some of the best ones!  Johnny's Little Bar, Nick's, Moriarty's, Leader, Ontario Street Cafe, and the Map Room.

yeah otto mosers and the rathskeller moved off e4th and mosers upped their game, but what about the rathskeller? it moved to prospect, but i dk if it is still around?

Chicago's Home of Chicken & Waffles, a popular Soul Food restaurant with three locations in Chicago, will open its next location in Downtown Cleveland. The owners say they have been following our city’s progress and couldn’t wait to dip their toes in our bubbling market.

The restaurant will be claiming the 4,000-square-foot space at 1144-46 Prospect Avenue, which is the current home of the Rathskeller. That longstanding bar, if you recall, previously was displaced from its previous home on East Fourth Street by redevelopment.

After a healthy delay - this place is now being worked on and signs say opening this late this month (which seems ambitious to me, but good that it's in motion)

My hovercraft is full of eels

hey does anybody know if the schvitz is still open? i got somebody who needs it asap lol - thx!

Schvitz is still alive and well, but they close during the summer months. They usually open up around the first week of October and then stay open until the end of April. I haven't been in years, though, so it might have changed since then.

Who would want to go to Schvitz when you're already schvitzing? When it's not so hot, then you need a schvitz.

I remember talking with the owners last year when they first opened. This was a dream for them. Unfortunately their background was in building restoration, and not operating a restaurant/concert venue.

From early on it would be frustrating because they were never consistent about their hours of operation; you would show up and the door was locked. Some days they wouldn't open at all. When I mentioned this to the "manager" she said she would have to find their "web guy" to update their correct hours on their Facebook page.

You really don't need an IT expert for this.

Anyhow, sorry to see it close. My friends and I had some fun times there - when they were open. And sad to see people put so much investment into a place, when in the end it's just not enough to work out.

Citizen Pie Inks Deal in Ohio City for Second Location

Two months shy of its one-year anniversary, the popular Neapolitan-style pizza shop Citizen Pie (15710 Waterloo Rd., 216-417-2742) has announced that it is expanding. The team has inked a deal to open a second location, this one in the SoLo neighborhood of Ohio City, a block or so south of the West Side Market. The 1,700-square-foot brick building (2144 W. 25th St.) is twice the size of the original in Collinwood, which continues to exceed the expectations of both the owners and customers.

That's too bad.  I've never been in the place, but I liked its look and signage: the music stanza frieze across the front was quite creative.  Also I like the direction the Birdtown strip has been taking in recent years since its theretofore rundown look -- lately Birdtown's been looking more like Waterloo, Jr.  An empty bar/storefront certainly won't help.  Hopefully it won't be empty long.

Always sorry to see.  But it's a never ending source of wonder to those of us who've been in the industry some time how often people open a restaurant or bar with no knowledge or background in the business.  Most seem to think it will be a fun semi-retirement, or a party (if they're young).  Neither is true, at least if you want to make a real business of it.  There's a lot of grinding it out in the restaurant business, and a lot of discipline required if you want to have it make money.

CLEVELAND -- Are you ready to spend your evenings wastin’ away again?

It was first announced in May that Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville would open a location in the Flats East Bank across from Punch Bowl Social on Front Avenue.

Now, we’re getting our first glimpse of image renderings that reveal more about the restaurant’s design:

http://www.wkyc.com/news/local/cleveland/first-look-what-to-expect-at-jimmy-buffetts-margaritaville-in-cleveland/334743791

omg i am totally stoked for margaritaville -- oh to be wasted away again there!

but seriously its not a bad joint for the flats. it certainly does give off a vacation vibe. and lord knows jimmy buffet remains ever yuuuuge in ne ohio.

I would totally go there in the summer and I'm no Parrothead. I think it will be a fun atmosphere.

^ thats funny because i would steer far clear of it in the summer. i would go in the winter though when we most need it.

In the last couple years, we've lost PJ'a, the Huron Square Deli, Sammy's, and now Addy's. We no longer have any old diners/lunch counter places left in downtown Cleveland.

Inn of the Barristers is still kicking.

I'm bummed about Addy's, but happy about Yours Truly.

For whatever reason, this morning was the first time I noticed just how far along 'Chicago's Home of Chicken & Waffles' is. The front of the restaurant looks great, especially when you consider how decrepit The Rathskeller looked before. I wonder if there is an updated opening date?

^ they picked a bad time to go with a moniker like that didn't they? i hope for their sake it holds off opening for awhile lol.

Another one of those corner Solon restaurants down the drain drove by and Paco's tacos was closed today of the Burntwood Tavern family that makes Paco's tacos which was Applebees, Bob Evans which closed and is torn down and then Panini's which became something else for like two weeks that have closed at that corner

Tony Roma's and The Cooker were also once at that corner I believe.

Paco's Taco's - despite being a concept from the (by all evidence) highly successful Burntwood/M Italian team - was rumored (from those working there) to have been on the way out for months. Passing by frequently, it was clear the parking lot was getting emptier. It closed about a week ago. No surprise. It was OK, but nothing great - though I think this crowd wanted the standard Mexican fare - when much of it was pick your own individuals tacos and make a meal, etc... - and the barely made over Applebee's building didn't help.  Unsure if the Burntwood team (the "Chef Art Pour" restaurant group - having nothing to do with a chef named "Art" - but with their stated goals of having great food, great drink, great surroundings... well...) owns or leases the building, but wonder if they'll try to put a Solon version of their always busy "M Italian" from Chagrin Falls into that space - just as they put a Solon Burntwood in a few years ago as their second, after Chagrin (the Solon version of which still remains packed, despite these other closings, about 100 yards to the west of the former Paco's)

The adjacent Tavern on 91, which replaced Panini's and other spots previously there (the former Cooker) - was - according to folks from Paco's - shut down mid-lunch by the health department a few months ago. It lasted a month or two.

Yeah, we drive by that area at least once per week, and Paco's was always pretty darn empty.  Probably didn't help that its Yelp reviews weren't that stellar!

Oh man, that's not good:

Arcadian is Closed, Staff Locked Out of Building

It’s a shocking state of affairs, to say the least, for the four-month-old restaurant. That investor, named for the first time by Hridel as Tim Kopp, owner of Ohio Valley Supply, told his partners that “he was done.” He had a locksmith change the locks on the building, effectively locking out all staffers, including chef partners Cory and Rebecca Hess.

Okay, I'm thinking which restaurant is this? Is this the place in Gordon Square?

I didn't even have a chance to go there. What a shame. Surf, yes, pretty much across the street from XYZ.

Reading between the lines it sounds like the investor was somebody not well versed in the restaurant business.

No not at all.  The two things have nothing to do with one another - outside of name.  I do not believe anyone should be sensitive about this.

"Chicago's" being slightly odd sounding as a restaurant name has been my own biggest concern with this restaurant's name since first announced. And though I personally can't wrap my head around the half-joking (or is it?), half-serious CLE decades-long sports-related hatred of the fine cities of Pittsburgh and Detroit (and state of Michigan), if the place were "Pittsburgh's" I could at least get the concern.

yeah and chicago doesnt even have anything to do with chicken&waffles.

it looks sharp though. they really fixed it up. and of course the food is right on time for the winter.

I'm with MTS on this one; I have no problem with the name: Chicago is the home base of this franchise... It looks like a nice place in an up 'n coming part of downtown. I plan to check it out...

That's a shame about Willeyville.  They were the FEB pioneer.  But it's a volatile biz with, I'm sure, extremely high rents.  I'm sure, just as with their neighbor, Ken Stewart's, the space will be snapped up with a new restaurant.  FEB is extremely hot property; and with new joints coming in along ORR over on the next block, Willeyville's space won't be vacant for long.

The too-large Crop complex was just a mistake to open in the first place. Ken Stewart's was perhaps the wrong place for them, they knew it, and had a new tenant open in space the week after they closed.

The Willeyvillee would seem to be the first restaurant that tried and failed on own merits. I fear there may be more.

Phase 3 will fill in physical space between 1 and 2  and needs to get on the move. They also need to open the current pedestrian street between Alley Cat and Coastal for cars so those restaurants can get exposure a feel of more activity.

A lot of times, people who are talented chefs don't really have a handle on the business end, especially "don't treat cash like cash".

i personally feel that downtown has not been coordinated appropriately.  I think the bulk of the housing being created is around the Euclid/financial district area and it looks like most of those businesses will reap the benefits.  As great at FEB has been as a development, it is such an island and i am concerned about it.  Really need more housing and alot of it quickly.  Housing is the most important.  Look at Detroit Shoreway...i know for a fact that some of those OUTSTANDING restaurants are hurting or barely making it because of the weeknights.  When the Edison finishes, thats 250+ more new units (lets say 500+ new residents) within walking distance and income to utilize those places.  Housing is such a game changer.  I am really not interested at all to going to FEB, except for POrtside Distillery, honestly.  You have to pay to park and the food options are not top dog in the city.

Lets hope for the best

Yea, hasn't worked for Symon, Sawyer or Bruell.
