^Maybe, but I doubt I'm the only one in this region who boycotts Beachwood businesses given the population's decision to support such absurdity. (he didn't declare he was taking two public salaries after he was elected. he was RE-elected while doing this and Beachwood residents knew this.) If I support a Beachwood business, the city takes its cut. Why should I pay for this and support such a community. If any mayor should be the highest paid in this state, it should be Cleveland, as its the most important city in the state (yes, I know Columbus has more population), but Beachwood's mayor probably makes 2x what Jackson does---who does far more than 2x the work (or at least has more than 2x the responsibility).

You're boycotting Beachwood because the mayor is taking on two salaries? Well... that's a new one.

^and the people of Beachwood support this.  But its not difficult to avoid such places as I don't live near them. So when looking for restaurants I just naturally skip over anything in Beachwood, not that there's many worth traveling specifically to anyway---so its not really an active or deliberate 'boycott', just a passive one..... I only mention it here, because others may feel the same way, so that may be why restaurants in Beachwood are failing now. Then again, restaurants are tough businesses, so it may be completely unrelated.

More Maggiano's info: Apparently they have only closed 3 other locations - out of 50 or so - in their 26 years of business.. Fans of chains or Beachwood or not, not good for the market's retail reputation... (Minneapolis and Sacramento 2 of the 3.. Both "weak sales").

Also recently opened locations in Kansas City, Las Vegas and Houston are all 8,000-9,000 square feet with limited banquet space.. Beachwood is 17,000 square feet -

too big - iffy historical location for restaurants - at end of 12 year lease - and with a big following if the 1,000+ Facebook comments to local media stories are any indication

I certainly could envision a new 9,000 square foot east or west location a year or two down the road.. Hey, maybe not, but something seems off about the way this was announced..

Did Cleveland annex Beachwood?

I dont know the accuracy of this, but I heard over the weekend that the Mall owners raised the rents tremendously, almost triple (according to this person) and that led to Maggianos leaving.

I read the article above. Why should tenants pay for property tax? Or does merchant own (condo-style) his/her unit?  Otherwise, property tax is something paid by owners---who build this into the rent. And rent levels are fixed by a lease agreement.

^^There are a few Penn Station's in the Cleveland region, but there are exactly zero within the city.  This will be the first.  And next time you go get the cheesesteak and add the banana peppers.  You won't be disappointed.

funny article. unless you have to commute through the actual Penn Station :-P. Maybe this should have gone on the Cincinnati restaurants thread since that's where it originated?

Penn Station as a Dining Destination? Yes, Really

By PATRICK McGEEHAN

JULY 28, 2017

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/28/nyregion/penn-station-east-coast-subs.html

For many weary commuters who soldier through New York City’s busiest transit hub on a daily basis, eating at Pennsylvania Station is a last resort, reserved only for the most inescapable of delays. These days, Penn Station is prone to leaving most travelers feeling dyspeptic.

So those all-too-familiar with the grim rail terminal might be perplexed to learn that less than 600 miles west of Manhattan, the mere mention of Penn Station causes some people’s stomachs to rumble, their taste buds to tingle.

“I think Penn Station’s great,” Mark Rouse said.

“It’s awesome. It’s fantastic,” said Tim Craft of the food at Penn Station.

Of course, these men were not speaking of the Penn Station that has been the object of so much disaffection this summer, as Amtrak’s emergency track repairs have forced service cutbacks and train reroutings have upended many lives. Instead, they were among the many satisfied customers of a chain of sandwich shops in the Midwest and South that curiously, if not inexplicably, chose to brand itself Penn Station East Coast Subs.

I read the article above. Why should tenants pay for property tax? Or does merchant own (condo-style) his/her unit?  Otherwise, property tax is something paid by owners---who build this into the rent. And rent levels are fixed by a lease agreement.

The norm in retail leases is that tenants pay prorata share of property insurance, real estate taxes, and common area maintenance.

Something fishy about Maggiano's closing, was there, not slow by any means, I literally saw 5 employees returning with huge black heat bags and I mean huge. Just doesn't jive not to mention this store was their top one a couple years ago as previously mentioned.

^From what I am reading nothing seems fishy.  Their lease is coming up for renewal and apparently their cams will explode to such an extent that it does not make economic sense to renew even if sales are good.  Your rent, including cams, should only be about 8-12 percent of sales in order for a restaurant to  be viable.

Well that's kind of my point it is fishy so then this leads me to believe with the huge space they have which they have had for 12 years that the rumor is true that General growth properties has increased their rent and that is foolish on General growth properties part then if true

What are cams?

^common area maintenance.  They can actually fluctuate during the term of the lease.

Well that's kind of my point it is fishy so then this leads me to believe with the huge space they have which they have had for 12 years that the rumor is true that General growth properties has increased their rent and that is foolish on General growth properties part then if true

While pure speculation on my part, maybe General Growth did not increase their base rent at all or very little.  The huge increase could be the monthly cam rate (due to the huge property tax increase resulting from the resolution of the long assessment battle with the school board).  Very few landlords (if any) are going to or can afford to absorb increased cams.  And of course it you do it for one (say because you feel it is important to have a restaurant on as a tenant to help lure traffic for the other stores), then all the other tenants are going want the same deal.  17,000 square feet is a lot of space and if your cams go up even a small amount it is going to hurt your bottom line no matte what you sales are.  You can only increase prices so much.  Time to find a cheaper space or just give up the market if not worth it.

I feel sorry for the few local "mom and pop" stores in Beachwood Place who are even less able to absorb increase cams due to the property tax increase (unlike national chains that can spread the cost over their entire operations).  Local stores (the few that are there) may be a thing of the past at Beachwood Place, especially with so many other options nearby.

Bomba, the taco/rum restaurant from the owners of Paladar, will be opening in the former Sushi Rock space at La Place in Beachwood.  Cedar Creek Grille is still planned to build a tavern BB&L (or something like that) in the front of La Place, adjacent to Cedar Creek. This from the Beachwood planning meeting last week.

Maggiano's in Beachwood - continues to place want ads for several positions (hosts, etc...) - including a few ads recent days -  despite a stated closing in 3 weeks (no mention of this in the ads..).. Odd to hire vs overtime or temps.. They may be closing - or moving at some point - but sure seems point to some other arrangement after end of Sept. We'll see.

3 Palms Pizzeria (from the Flip side folks) and Nada (from Cincinnati) also appear to be opening at Pinecrest. Plus, a strong rumor that a Nespresso coffee bar/store will open there, too.

Cooper's Hawk Winery/Restaurant - opening south of/across Harvard from Pinecrest in new Orange South section of Chagrin Highlands.

I'm not sure that the place ever gained any traction but Old City Libations announced they are closing.

eyehrtfood.  I recall it mentioned a year maybe 2 that Bomba was supposed to open there (although initially reported by a "Paladar exec" that Bomba would open in the current Paladar space with Paladar moving to Pinecrest), but is there still room for a tavern there?

Happy about 3 Palms as I thought it was a cool concept in Hudson, just wish Shaker could have snagged it.

Interesting and odd about Maggiano's

Citizen Pie pizza bistro to open in Ohio City

If you haven't made it to Citizen Pie in Collinwood yet, maybe a new location on W.25th in Ohio City opening Tuesday will be more convenient.  I'm a pizza lover and I've tried some of the so-called best pizza in the country from Chicago to New Haven to New York, but I honestly think Citizen Pie is as good as any. Even the legendary DiFara's or Lucali's in Brooklyn. Of course there are different styles, but if you like a Neopolitan, this is hard to beat. Anywhere.

Interesting and odd about Maggiano's

There was a rumor of Paladar moving to Pinecrest a year or teo back as noted but think only a rumor. Nada "Modern Mexican" appears to be long on the Pinecrest leasing map - and similar enough to Paladar - and that may have caused the confusion about Paladar moving.

The Cedar Creek run Tavern at La Place apparently will go into the space next to Cedar Creek/patio that was the former Omaha Steaks and some adjoining spaces. Addition of 300+ square feet on Cedar side as part of this. Bombs also building an addition on side of 1200 sf?)

The Hello Bistro quick service concept from Eat'n Park will likely go between Bomba and massage place fronting Cedar.

Several other restaurants to be announced at La Place the GGP architect said during planning meeting last week..i think likely taking Williams-Sonoma space and maybe Pottery Barn Kids (if it moves to Pinecrest with the already announced Pottery Barn and Williams Sonoma). Maggiano's? Beachwood Place itself has never been successful with full service restaurants and La Place gives great visibility(Nordstrom cafe aside... But it's a different, lunch and early dinner focused idea...)

Any word if one of these restaurants will be the Seasons 52

No clue on Seasons 52. Haven't heard their name tied to mall for a few years - though sister restaurant Capital Grille, originally named for mall lot along with Seasons, appears to be doing quite well... so... Mall architect said several more restaurants to be announced soon at La Place drawn (his words) by Container Store presence coming vacancies.

Note: There is a "new" restaurant right now at that Cedar/Brainard corner to be noted (Legacy) - in that Brio has changed concepts  (one of 4 testing this, nationally) from "Brio Tuscan Grille" to "Brio Coastal Bar and Kitchen." Remodeled interior and exterior and new menu.

Its very good, not sure about all the descriptions but ingredients wise i would say a top 3 neopolitan pizza in all of the city

So it looks like Maggiano’s closed at Beachwood Mall as planned

I was at Legacy Village last week when the forum was still down and it looked like very abruptly Stir Crazy closed.  I wonder if this was the legacy village restaurant that eyehrtfood had mentioned that was thinking about not renewing their lease when it was up because of changing demographics

Not exactly earth shattering, but a Dunkin Donuts is opening at the corner of East Ninth and Rockwell.  At least it is a nice use for a corner that has been empty for a long time and will add some much needed food variety to the 9/12 District.

Wonder what that will do to Phoenix Coffee... Granted those are two entirely different types of "coffee-drinking" clients

^which corner? SW corner was a vacant lot for decades.

Northwest, in the same building as CVS.

I live close by and was going to try them, but they won't take an order over the phone.  They want you to come in and wait around in this stupid (and too small) area while they make it.  No thanks.

I live close by and was going to try them, but they won't take an order over the phone.

It's not that kind of pizza. Citizen Pie is doing authentically neapolitan pizza, and the challenge restaurateurs have when trying to do 'authentic' international cuisine is that often Americans have expectations that directly contradict the authentic part, and they have to decide whether to risk potential customers by going with "authentic." Since there a quintillion pizza joints in America I for one am happy to drive out of my way for the real thing every so often so I am glad he goes with authentic. So he picks up potential customers that way as well.

The good news is it only takes like 90 seconds in the oven. I definitely would not recommend taking it home, it's supposed to be eaten piping hot. Go in and sit down sometime.

Sneak Peek: Il Rione Pizza Coming Soon to Detroit Shoreway

It’s been two years since Brian Moss and Brian Holleran purchased a dilapidated brick structure on W. 65th Street in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood. In approximately two weeks’ time, that space will open as Il Rione Pizzeria (1303 W. 65th St.).

Over the years the building has been home to a beer hall, pool hall and speakeasy before it was chopped up into apartments. The goal all along has been to retain the authenticity of the building while bringing it back to its days as a valued neighborhood asset.

The Sausage Shoppe, an 80-Year-Old Institution, to Close this Spring

Posted By Douglas Trattner on Tue, Dec 5, 2017 at 4:22 pm

Fans of the West Side butcher shop The Sausage Shoppe, which originally opened in 1938, learned yesterday that the store and smokehouse would be closing for good this spring. Owners Norm and Carol Heinle announced the sad news on Facebook with the following message:

"Norm and Carol and all of the Heinle Family want to THANK YOU for being our customer during the last 80 years. As 2017 comes to a close, we will start a 3-month closure. Saturday, March 31st will be our last day of business. Thank you for sharing your lives with us. We will miss you."

The Old Brooklyn shop opened on March 3, 1938 as Kirchberger Sausage under the ownership of Hans Kirchberger and Theo Johanni, immigrants from Bavaria, Germany. The original location was at 4425 Memphis Avenue, but was relocated to its current location in 1962.

The popular source of various flavors of bratwurst, kielbasa, beef jerky, cottage hams, hickory-smoked bacon and coldcuts was featured in numerous print and television spots, including Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservations" on The Travel Channel.

Massimo da Milano, on W. 25 St, is closing. I haven't been there in years, but it was a great restaurant. Its been there for at least 30 years. Truly a pioneer for that part of Ohio City. However, the PD just glosses over it--and this is where I learned of it closing. It should at least say why....

".....will occupy the first floor of the historic Forest City Savings and Trust Building, built in 1890s and currently occupied by Massimo da Milano, which will close later this month."    Would it really kill the PD to hire one or two more editors? The industry's been so hurt, they could probably get someone for cheap....

Anyone know why its closing?

http://www.cleveland.com/travel/index.ssf/2017/12/want_to_run_a_restaurant_cleve.html

It was already down to being just an event space.  My guess would be that the owner of the building or restaurants itself wants it rebranded and updated now that the area there is blowing up.

^Didn't know it was just an event space that the regular restaurant closed. When did that happen?

A few years back.

It was already down to being just an event space.  My guess would be that the owner of the building or restaurants itself wants it rebranded and updated now that the area there is blowing up.

They didn't advertise, and in 20 years not one single person ever recommended going there. I figured the restaurant was just some money laundering scheme.

^hmmm... I myself hadn't been there in 25 or so years---but I had been there a few times and it each time it was excellent. Of course, a lot can happen within 25 years, as well as lots of new competition.  Website is still up--and mentions lunch:

"Massimo’s is open for lunch Monday-Friday 11:00 AM-2:00 PM. The lunch buffet is $6.95 for dine-in and $3.00 to take out."

$3 for lunch for a fancy place?!? That is strange, not to mention having take out at all for a place like that!

Sorry to see them go.

Want to run a restaurant? Cleveland chefs sought for new Ohio City food hall

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Calling all Cleveland chefs: Have you always wanted to own your own restaurant, but didn't have the capital? Here's a chance to run your own kitchen, relatively risk-free.

The Galley Group, founded in Pittsburgh two years ago, is bringing its restaurant-incubator concept to Cleveland next year, with space for four aspiring chef-owners. The eatery - it doesn't have a name yet - will be part of the Quarter development, under construction at the corner of Detroit Avenue and W. 25th Street in Ohio City.

It will occupy the first floor of the historic Forest City Savings and Trust Building, built in 1890s and currently occupied by Massimo da Milano, which will close later this

http://www.cleveland.com/travel/index.ssf/2017/12/want_to_run_a_restaurant_cleve.html#incart_river_mobile_index

seems like everyone is kind of right on the money here -- mdm was a very heralded restaurant when it opened, but after a nice run it turned very lowkey and then to catering and yeah perhaps shady.

that's pretty cool the building owner is on board for turning into a food hall, which is a hot concept these days. hopefully they have inviting signage for that prime space, which will give fledgling food businesses a start.

whats really remarkable is what a great, hip neighborhood it has turned into right around there, you could really spend a day just checking out spaces, transformer gallery, etc., and hanging out.
