The name "Republic" reminds me of "District" which, if its still there, is across the street. Is District a Driftwood restaurant also?   Not sad to see Otto Mosers go. The original one was cool, but the one at Playhouse Sq was just ordinary and greasy food.

I didn't notice it until now but the property on which Trattoria On The Hill and its parking lot behind (four parcels total) in Little Italy sold on Jan. 3. D'Agostino Properties LLC to Klika Properties LLC sold the four parcels and structures for $407,000.

Long time Cleveland food critic Joe Crea has passed away.  Always enjoyed his writing and reviews:

^ Sad to see this.  I always read his articles.

It's a strange location for this business, IMHO. I would have thought it would be in a more transit-accessible location since its mission is similar to Edwin's on Shaker Square...

Columbus fast-casual brand opens its first out-of-market restaurant

Brassica is opening its first out-of-market eatery.

The Columbus-based fast-casual Lebanese/Mediterranean restaurant brand is starting to serve diners at its Shaker Heights site in suburban Cleveland Friday.

“It’s a natural evolution for us to look at the other great Ohio cities,” said Kevin Malhame, co-founder and owner of Organic Trails Cafe, the company behind Brassica. Malhame co-owns the restaurant company with his wife Katy Malhameand brother Darren Malhame.

^ I only meant it's not good they're closing because I enjoy going there.  This town is filled with red sauce joints so it is nice to have a different type of Italian place.

Oh, OK.......I won't lie, the only Bruel place i like is Alley Cat......But that space should fill quick. Sounds like he wanted rent reduction

Wouldn't it be more likely that the landlord is looking for a big rent increase?  To your previous point, there are lots of active projects in the immediate area. Was East 4th even full the last time their lease came up?

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

Zack Bruell’s Chinato to close

I wonder what is line for the space?  MRN has been very good at curating a destination that is hoping from lunch to midnight.  They need a few more neighborhood necessities to compliment the dining, but overall the area is solid and they have been a good foundation and catalyst for the developments that are currently under construction or planned.

Not surprising. The three times I've been in there in the past few years, the place has been virtually empty....

Not surprised either. Ate there ONCE and gave it a 5 out of 10, that I'd never go back - was very underwhelming. CLE needs good diners though on the west side, so I was disappointed that this place wasn't so good....

Melissa’s and now Michaels. I see a trend.

^Places that begin with the letter "M" in Rocky River?  Market and Mitchell's better be careful!

Why did Melissa's close? The food was good, but service was way too slow.

That's the same reason Sweet Melissa closed in University Heights.

^ dewey is an outright cleveland legend -- all the best to him, he earned a nice retirement. i'm glad he will keep the chagrin shoppe open though its quite a fixture there.

Found out today is J Gumbo's (next to Chipotle downtown) last day in business.  They were struggling within the last few months and it was evident- but was one of my favorite places to go during lunch.  Sucks.

Shake Shack finally opened downtown today.

Last time I walked in there, it smelled really bad---like cleaner + other weird smells.  I paused for a moment, then turned around and walked out---and I rarely ever do that.  And i had eaten there before and it was fine. If that new smell was a constant then probably lots of people walked out and hence their troubles.... sorry to see them go as I had liked it when I did eat there.

I finally tried out Blue Habanero at W 65 & Detroit----its was really really good. Good drinks and delicious food.

Yeah, that place is great, and they've recently won best Mexican Restaurant in the Cleveland area.

In this day and age that is a major show stopper.  The trend is already moving away from sit down restaurants, just as it is away from the idea that eating is inherently a social activity.   Causing it to take too long moves the trade off in the direction of "just grabbing something".

Trio in Tremont (West 14th and Auburn, former location of Bac and La Tortilla Feliz) closed this week - tried it a few times and it was good, pretty innovative but small menu. Sounds like they just couldn't get the traction needed to stay open.

Really bummed about Trio. I thought the food was terrific.

What’s wrong with the location? Bac and Tortilla Feliz both lasted 10-ish years in that spot.

Haha...what? I seriously doubt there is any large city in the entire country that's on average 20 years older than another large city.

Or the world, for that matter.

Wrong restaurant. You're thinking of CIAO! Bistro in Ohio City.

Yeah, Trio had great food, but their price point turned me off if I'm being honest.  I think it's hard to draw the clientele that the price point demands in that location no matter how good the food is.  Hard to compete with more established places like Dante and Fahrenheit especially when you're off the main strip.

If you are going to enter the Tremont/Gordon Square/Ohio City market, you need to have a major differentiator...whether its concept, name, identity.  Cant try to trade punches with the places listed above
