Question about facebook. On Townhall's facebook page there are reviews. This is what the first one says:

"Overrated and unsanitary with garbage management...."

Don't businesses control their own facebook pages? If so, wouldn't townhall (or any business) just delete all negative comments and leave only the good ones?  And if so, why would anyone place a negative review on a company's facebook page--unless maybe to tell them what they're thinking. Or are reviews real and can't be controlled by the facebook page holder?

Lago is another in the media.   The owner is responding with:  "The pictures are one moment, one angle, one second of time. It in no way accurately reflects the time, money and effort that was put into preparing our business in line with the state guidelines within a week’s time."

The photo referenced shows a packed patio at 5:30 pm.  I can tell you that I took a drive on Saturday afternoon and cruised by there around 4 pm and it was just as packed, with patrons spilling out onto the sidewalk and street with drinks in hand.

Letting the city inspectors deal with it, if it's indeed a legitimate law, or simply don't go.  Note:  saying you're not going there and why is fine.   Protected speech.  I mean reporting to authorities.

We've seen a serious effort to destigmatize snitching over the past 30 years or so, starting with DARE most likely.  It's very bipartisan and very insidious.  Authoritarian governments of all stripes need networks of informers.

Lago East Bank said that controlling the guests was unrealistic and “exceedingly difficult” and said it is not an enforcement agency.

Well the owners of Lago are unintentionally making the case that reopening was a bad decision.

They aren't wrong.  Any time a bar gets a flash crowd  it did not expect it's very difficult to keep a lid on them and almost impossible to regain control.   On at least one occasion, we simply quit serving at about midnight.

As I've said, March 15th was a very busy and crowded night at a lot of bars, especially since it was a Sunday.   There wasn't any uptick.   We'll see.

It’s not petty reporting.  It’s reporting businesses ignore clear requirements which can lead to more deaths.

Most places apparently had few issues complying.  The ones that didn’t simply chose not to and deserve to be addressed by the state.

They are lying.   The massive crowd was there all afternoon, not just "a moment in time" as they told the TV reporter.

I get it--most of these places aren't set up with security and bouncers to deal with turning people away.   They may want to think about it for liability reasons.

Look, I would not call it lying.  "All afternoon" isn't going to be enough time to react effectively, in most cases.

This is something I used to do semi professionally.   You are right, they should, and hell I could actually train them.  A lot of places hire the wrong people for the job.

Its not difficult to limit the number of people who enter a business establishment. You saying Giant Eagle or Heinens or little hardware stores or bike shops have more muscle than a restaurant or bar?

^ Haven't establishments had to abide by building code occupancy limits even before COVID. How did they do it before?

Usually the normal occupancy limit wouldn't be too far off from the most people you would be able to fit in a space anyway.  And places seldom got checked, with the main exception being some high profile events.

Occupancy codes usually aren't an issue. If a restaurant is at its occupancy code, there are no more tables left to sit at anyway. For covid-19, the occupancy levels are far lower than the limit for building/fire safety. I've never seen Giant Eagle or Heinens packed to the gills to even approach their build code occupancy limit, but now there's a staffer out front metering people in and out.

The City issued complaint notices to Lago and Mulberry--Mulberry for opening up volleyball.

Also, the City issued a complaint notice AND notice of violation to TownHall and Harry Buffalo.

It's not difficult at all, but it requires alarming the fire doors.  Or stationing someone at them.   They'd be prepared the next day, or the day after.   But got caught by surprise, which admittedly is kind of dumb.   Trying to spend the minimum, no doubt.

Again, I saw no spike in the numbers following March 15 and I did look for it.

Anyone else see the “apology” Townhall issued?

Essentially says “The victim was a white, disgruntled former employee, so TECHNICALLY this is xenophobic not racist so it’s cool. We recommended some books on racism for our GM to read, but the PC police won’t bully me to fire him.”

Then they proceeded to post exhibits from the subject-ex-employee’s personnel file as for the reason they terminated him in the first place

He should have talked with a PR professional before releasing that communication.

It truly had it all! From the top:

1. What the GM said was wrong. ?

2. But technically the victim was white, so it wasn't racist, just xenophobic. ?

3. The victim is a disgruntled former employee - oh, here's some exhibits from his personnel file ?

4. We gave the GM a book on racism to help him learn his lesson ?

5. I won't be bullied by the PC police ?

An employer can't legally release such stuff can they? I thought all former employers can say is that a person worked there between x and x dates.

It was screenshots of old social media posts, which was the reason he was fired.

TH will get sued over that for, at the very least, intentional infliction of emotional distress.

They can.  Most places don’t so they can avoid lawsuits by potentially costing former employees new jobs.  This is exhibit A as to why most places have that policy.

Agreed - heard from a friend its already being worked on. However, Cuyahoga County civil trials are all likely going to be pushed into 2021, so its an awkward time to file.

I think this is the first time I've actually seen friends of mine finally say "yeah I'm never going there again."

Ya know a long time ago Tony George said in an interview that he had no personal or emotional attachment to his restaurants; they simply exist to generate revenues. That stayed with me. In a way I even admire him being truthful about it, but I figured I'd much rather spend money on the places where owners did put their emotion and care into their bars & restaurants.

For the sake of accuracy, I’d just point out that Bobby George owns TownHall, not his father Tony. It is my understanding from those with firsthand experience with both that Bobby is very different (in a good way) from his father–this episode, perhaps, notwithstanding.

that was my impression... then I read this earlier today... which appears to be supported throughout this post, for the most part.

I mean, if only a third of this is true, it’s reason for me to never step foot at a George establishment again.

Yeah...Bobby has publicly distanced himself from his dad’s homophobic comments, which is good. But that doesn’t excuse the multi-faceted objectification of his staff.

It will probably be "later" than "sooner" (obviously) but somebody will eventually snap it up.  The location is too good, especially with the new building going up next door.  Some young chef with investors (ie family members LOL) looking for his first place may be able to snap it up at favorable lease terms.  Again, it will be sometime in the future.

Are we still playing this dumb game even off the CV thread?

Wife and I took advantage of the socially distanced tables on Collision Bend’s outdoor patio last night, and as we were walking back home we noticed that Bar Louie on East 6th is permanently closed. Did I miss an earlier post about this, or is it brand new information? Either way, that is a huge hole on that street ?

Bar Louie is in bankruptcy.  They've closed most of their Ohio restaurants.

On the news in Detroit-Shoreway...I've noticed that they put up window coverings and assumed that work was underway.  I had no idea the project was going to be this substantial, though!  It's great news.

Now, what about the coffee shop that was supposed to be moving in on the corner?  Not a lot of progress over there...

And we're going to have a vacancy in the old Charing Cross book store location soon...

Apparently, Proof (barbecue) in Tremont opened to a quiet opening yesterday. I stopped in and was pleasantly surprised that they do Carolina style barbecue as Welles traditional.  The food was amazing.! Best barbecue I’ve had in years. It’s in the same complex as Crust and Visible Voice . They’re also building a huge back patio with an outside smoker. It’s opening in two weeks. Dave Ferrante (Visible Voice) and Michael Griffin (Crust) put the place together. I can’t believe how good that barbecue was and I just found out about the place. The bartender said they’re planning on doing a Father’s Day curbside pickup package.

^Cool---More BBQ the better! will have to check it out. I see ribs in the photos on their website, but not on the menu?

I had the brisket, pork belly and the smoked chicken. I don’t know that they do ribs. They don’t need to do ribs. The food is amazing. I’ll take it over Mabel’s and cheaper.

^Hmmmm.....a BBQ place that doesn't do ribs?! I should protest that, but looking at the photos on their webpage, it looks hard to resist. I'll check them out next time I'm in Tremont.

Dammit!! They had some of the best steaks in the city. SMH

I think he’s part of one of the restaurants opening in the Flats.

I’m very worried about the health of downtown Cleveland restaurants with capacity limits and no big events bringing people downtown....

Presuming he's aware there's a problem, Frank needs to think outside the box to save some restaurants. Start closing certain streets downtown so existing restaurants can expand patios into the streets. Permit and incentivize restaurant food trucks/tented areas all over the Mall, Public Square, Browns stadium, Progressive Field, and city-owned parking lots. Eliminate property taxes on all commercial businesses for 6 months minimum. Permit open containers. Repurpose downtown Ambassadors to act as security against aggressive panhandlers (that sh*t along East 4th must stop).

if its speciality is carolina style bbq thats all about pulled pork, not so much ribs and etc. traditionally there are two condiment options, northern carolina uses vinegar and southern mustard. if you ask me its actually surprisingly hard to get carolina ‘que made just right, so i wish them all the best, but done well it makes a great sandwich or platter. i hope we get more reviews here.

btw i have read that carolina style is said to be america’s oldest bbq style.

edit: i goofed a bit -- there are two long famous bbq sauce types in nc! eastern style and lexington style. one is more tomato based. the other is vinegar based. sc has the mustard based. needless to say, all three are great.

Went back again tonight. Just as amazing as last weekend. They make three types of barbecue sauce and all were amazing. I absolutely hate gooey molasses based sauce. All three were unique, really good and don’t taste like the garbage store brand variety. Not many people were doing sit down but they were doing a sh*t ton of carry out orders.

Act as security against aggresive pandhandlers? Good luck with that. ACLU already won a court ruling years ago allowing panhandlers to do what ever they want unless they physically touch you. The ambassadors won't be allowed to kick any panhandlers out of E4 no matter how many paying patrons they bother. It's seriously hard to enjoy a drink or dinner out on the East 4th patios when someone gets pissed at you for not giving them money when you already have a drink in your hand or plate of food in front of you.

Frank isn't going to do anything at all. When Lakewood already passed ordinances for outside seating, you already know Cleveland isn't going to do it. Frank is no where to be found. Young leadership is needed badly in this city. I wish Kerry McCormack would run.
