Old Brooklyn Cheese Co. set to open in Van Aken District in Shaker Heights

https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2020/08/old-brooklyn-cheese-co-set-to-open-in-van-aken-district-in-shaker-heights.html

SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio - When Old Brooklyn Cheese Co.opens this Tuesday, Sept. 1, in Van Aken District’s Market Hall, Michael Januska will be more than a cheese monger, business owner and chef.

He will be an educator.

He has to be. With coronavirus concerns putting an end - at least for the time being - to samples, Januska must rely on language to impart the flavors of his offerings.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

Just ate at Betts for brunch.  Really really good and the space is super cool inside.  They’ve also set up plexiglass dividers.

LockKeepers undergoes major refurbishing, sets re-opening

https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2020/08/lockkeepers-undergoes-major-refurbishing-sets-re-opening.html

“INDEPENDENCE, Ohio - When coronavirus restrictions took hold, restaurants scrambled into takeout or shutdown mode. For LockKeepers, the owners took the forced hiatus and decided to overhaul the fine-dining institution in Independence.  Their efforts have amounted to much more than a deep-cleaning facelift. The refurbishing is in the home stretch, with a target re-opening date of late September-early October.

...

“Sinito and Woehrman said they have been fielding a flurry of calls and emails from regulars wanting to know about opening plans for LockKeepers as well as Il Venetian and Marble Room Steaks and Raw Bar in downtown Cleveland. The Sinitos’ Millennia Hospitality Group owns all three establishments.

....

“Unlike Nicholson’s Jack Torrance character, Woehrman is, of course, sane, and LockKeepers will be serving diners soon. Opening the other spaces, while newer, will be contingent on what happens to downtown, as restaurants deal with fewer commuters, fan-less games and no concerts.”

Unfortunately the article doesn’t actually answer the question about the downtown Millennia group restaurants.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

Cross posted from Centennial / 925 Euclid thread:

Other good news in this article. @mjarboe quoted Sinito saying both Marble Room and Il Venetian will reopen. He says Millenia Co are actually doing fine in rent collection and hospitality is only a small part of their business.

Sad to hear  Bakersfield in Ohio City has closed for good.  For an out of town restaurant chain they did a great job fitting great into the neighborhood vibe.

Won't stay empty for long. That corner is just too good to leave alone, especially with SHW moving in next door and more spin-off coming.....

Fun idea from Sol in downtown Willoughby ( @jmecklenborg is going to LOVE this one):

https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2020/09/sol-in-willoughby-holding-creative-mask-contest.html

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio - Sol in Willoughby wants customers to look at wearing masks as more than a chore.

So the restaurant is holding a contest for folks to show off their most creative masks to win a $50 gift card.

The restaurant is asking people in the restaurant to take a picture of themselves in a mask, post it to Instagram or Facebook, and tag the restaurant via social media. The restaurant will post side-by-side photos for folks to vote.

$50 gift card to where, exactly?  Home Depot?  Sounds like they're running all of their bills through an Amex card.

For the second time, Ruth’s Chris will be leaving Cleveland.

https://www.news5cleveland.com/news/local-news/cleveland-metro/ruth-chris-steak-house-closing-public-square-location

Obviously this is unfortunate news but I also never liked the design of their 200 Public Square location. The big gold box jutting out into the atrium always seemed an odd choice and I always wondered why they didn’t take advantage of the big barren sidewalk space they had on Superior, which would’ve made a great patio.

^Until I saw this news, I’d completely forgotten that it was even there. The location and as you say, how they designed it always felt sub-optimal.

My hovercraft is full of eels

^ nationally they have been getting bad reviews for awhile -- i dk whats up -- they were never great, but downhill alert.

Not for long...They'll be opening up in a new and expanded location on the near westside in early spring.

That stinks. Glad they’re getting a bigger space but I liked having a beer store of that quality in the neighborhood.

good luck to edwins, that is a prominent site.

There's a pretty good chance they'll be in the same neighborhood.

Unfortunately, this decision had been looming for a few years regardless of the pandemic and mostly unrelated to finances (until now). I know one of the Sokolowskis my age and according to them, no one from the next generation (sons, daughters, cousins, etc.) had interest in continuing the family business. They each went to school for different things and are on different career paths. The pandemic seems to have expedited the process and made the decision a bit clearer.

It’s likely better this way than to have an outsider come in and tarnish a legacy. That said, it’s a sad day regardless.

LockKeepers Has Reopened and Marble Room Will Do the Same in November

what does this say about the new ownership?

are they going to keep it going as is ... i hope?

or any guesses?

i never liked the blando renovation, but it just such a great place to hang out in if you are around the airport.

i would think a restaurant/bar can hold out the covid with all the indoor and outdoor space they have there. ???

But he'll probably open one in Geauga County.  Matt Fish never put a full Melt in Cleveland, and now he's even abandoning the inner ring.

Also, the COVID-19 excuse is lame.  The rumor over a year ago was that this location would close when the lease was up.  Its business had been decimated by all the suburban expansion.

Confused.  Plau, Inc., of 812 Huron Rd., is applying for a permit to alter 828 Huron Rd., which was Huron Point Tavern. Is it now Alesci's Downtown? Will it stay as Alesci's? Is that why the addresses are so close to each other? Plau Inc. was incorporated 23 year ago so it's not a new company.

Alesci's was on Huron for years (owed by the former wife of Jimmy Alesci who now owns a very busy place on Solon Rd in Solon).  A long time employee of Alesci's downtown (Jeff) bought the business around 2009-2010 or so with his brother and they had to change the name for legal reason to Huron Point Tavern.  Jeff basically ran the place ( as he had years of experience in the restaurant business).  His bother was more the business end.  Jeff practically lived there and had a few good employees (including his nephews who were going to school and working for him part time) but also, as is typical of this type of business, marginal help who would come and go.  Unfortunately Jeff died suddenly about 2 years ago and I was under the impression Huron Point closed since Jeff really was the business (his brother had a full time non restaurant job).  Maybe it did stay open (I am not downtown any longer so not familiar with area now) but I doubt it.  Are you saying it is reverting back to Alesci's?

Not sure. A google search shows Huron Point is permanently closed. A search on Alesci's suggests it is closed but other reviews (probably old) say it is open. There is very little info in the permit application.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

HPT closed for good a little while after Jeff passed.  The staff was more stable than you might imagine, actually, and quite committed to the place.  A few of his employees tried to keep it running, but couldn't make a go of it.  Also, it was down to pretty much Tribe/Cavs games even before Jeff's passing.  It likely wouldn't have lasted too much longer even if he hadn't died.

Do you really think they would be RKO?  Or just a flying slap on the wrist?
