well.  it wasnt a matter of if Scene was going to mess something up, it was a matter of when.  I appreciate them being around, but its pretty poor journalism.  They get most of their readership by trying to peak peoples curiousity on the ten best burgers, 10 best pizza, 10 best fries, 10 best cocktails, 10 best just about everything else.

^I think its bizarre too. I find it strange to give cash to a for-profit entity, unless its an investment where you could at least get your money back. As a restaurant, he could say, give me $50 and I'll give you a gift card worth $55 to be used two years from now---and he'd still make out as the costs for him may be $15-35 to have a bill for $55, especially if drinks are involved. But without something like that in return, I don't see a lot of people just giving him money, only to give more if they want to eat there. Wish him luck, though.

The article states clearly what the point is/benefits are of a person contributing (drinks named after you, special reservation line, etc) and Sawer stated that he's been having a lot of customers ask how they could invest.  The article also mentions that Sawer has most of the money already lined up. The Kickstarter campaign is a chance for his regular customers to take an active part in the restaurant.

^Yeah, I guess I get it.  Creative way to raise a little extra money and give some customers a symbolic stake in the place and some preferential goodies. Not what I naturally think of for Kickstarter, but I think that reflects my own lack of imagination.

What an awful tragedy - Sean Kilbane, co-owner of the Happy Dog and local music activist, passed away after an accident at work (apparently he fell down some steps). So young and yet he had such an impact on local music, the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood and the city in general  :-( R.I.P.

Awful story.  Happened right at the time Kilbane's establishment is peaking in popularity and expanding to the East Side.  Life is fragile.

Terrible news

I didn't know him well but everyone loved the guy.

Dear Jesus!  That is horrible, I met him a few times when I would visit Stone Mad.  F*cking horrible

^ odd I just sent him out a facebook friend request the other day.

Really tragic.

I'm sure we'll hear more, but I wouldn't be surprised if he had beer or other supplies at the bottom of a flight of stairs and was bringing them up to the bar area.  A lot of bars are set up like this (thank God we are not) and it can be a very dangerous task.  The lesson:  be careful at work, even doing the routine.

^^^^^^^ Very sad, indeed.

I noticed last night, while driving on West 9th, that there was work going on in the Charka space. Lights were on and people were inside. This was around 7:00 PM. Has anyone heard of another operator coming into this space?

More buzz on the popular Portland spot being transplanted into Downtown Cleveland -- Urban Farmer.

Downtown Farming: Portland's Beloved Urban Farmer Will Open a Cleveland Spot, and For That We Are Salivating

by Douglas Trattner

Last year, Travel & Leisure magazine named Portland's Urban Farmer restaurant one of the "Best Steakhouses in the U.S." Not long before that, The Guardian included the restaurant in its listing of "Top 10 Places to Eat in Portland."

Why should we care? Because in a few months, Urban Farmer will open a second location, in downtown Cleveland

Thoughts on if such a high end can be sustained?  Here's the Portland menu: http://urbanfarmerportland.com/portland-steakhouse-menus/

It doesn't look any more expensive than Ken Stewart's.

I like the sound of this:

"We ensure that every business is indigenous to the market that it's in, and it will be modeled after what the people who live and work in that city are looking for," he says.

Urban Farmer is described as a high-end, farm-to-table steakhouse, making it better suited to our market in some aspects than its native Portland. Not only does the fertile Cuyahoga Valley nourish a robust local foods network, but our wide-open spaces support a large and growing number of small farmers and ranchers.

Oh my god that sounds good. Maybe we can shove one of those steaks in Brent Larkin's face so he'll stop p!ssing and moaning about how awful it is here.

It doesn't look any more expensive than Ken Stewart's.

Or Red, no?

I think the bigger challenges for this place will be its slightly isolated location, generic name, and lack of an existing local rep to tap into.  When the name was first announced a couple years ago I assumed it was going to be some meh hotel restaurant.

The "regular steaks" aren't any more, but I don't recall Red having an $80 Wagyu steak on their menu.

urban farmer has a pleasing and clean looking menu.

the blog says they have fun local foodie events like fried chicken day, butchery classes, winery tours, etc., too.

Thanks but I prefer Burning River Pale Ale :-)

We recently added Commodore Perry to the Dortmunder, so with the last Christmas Ale keg still on tap that's three varieties.  We usually stock Conway's during St. Patrick's.  I suspect it's almost universal that bars and restaurants with liquor licences at least carry Dortmunder around here.

Phoenix Coffee to Open Ohio City Location This Summer

The rumors are true, java lovers: Local coffee roasters Phoenix Coffee will open a cafe in Ohio City this summer in an as-of-yet unreleased location. Phoenix already has shops on Lee Road and Coventry in Cleveland Heights and on E. 9th St. downtown. The Ohio City shop will be its first franchise on the west side.

Coffee director Chris Feran says Phoenix is aiming for "late summer" for an opening, likely sometime in August. He says they intend to create "a little bit of a different feel" there.

So does Coffee Fix have any actual franchise-affiliation with Phoenix, or do they just sell the beans?

And good for Ohio City. Phoenix Coffee plus Great Lakes Brewery = all you really need in life.

No affiliation. Phoenix sold it a couple years ago to a local businessman. There's several indie places around town that use Phoenix. Root Cafe, Dewey's and the Popcorn Shop,  Yours Truly and BonBon are a few of them.

The Root (formerly Phoenix Lakewood) has actually switched over to Rising Star.

Phoenix coffe house is the very best. The decor is wonderful and the scones are awesome.I am so happy to finally get a location on the west side. Now if they could just come a little further west!

nevermind...mixed up East & West 9th.

Have you had a chance to try Pour yet?

  • 2 weeks later...

I haven't tried Pour but have walked by it on Euclid.  The reason I like Phoenix is that they are committed to making it a "third place" with comfy chairs and lots of space - somewhere to hang out and relax, not just rush in and get coffee.

Kabob-G on Lorain near W. 120th has new owners (again).  They are now called Kabob Station. I think the building was a gas station before it became a donut shop and then a middle eastern restaurant. The food is extremely fresh with lots of special dishes like tomato and okra dinners as well as the usual pita sandwiches.  They also serve complementary hot tea in a glass tea cup with your meal.

Pour may not have the comfy chairs, but they do have power outlets on all their tables.  Which should encourage some of the mobile office/contractor/creative types to come in have a few cups of coffee and get some work done.

Plus they have some large tables which could be great for meetings where you need to get out of the office.

Fat Tueday at Soho.  They will have Revolution Brass Band playing.  Also - check out their upcoming Pappy tasting (which sold out in 30 minutes).  For those that don't know Pappy is basically the holy grail for bourbon drinkers.

That menu looks great. I'm really craving some good jambalaya now to take me out of this tundra for a few minutes.

The andouille sausae Po Boy looks good

So TB's Restaurant & Lounge opened last week in the former Black Dog Kitchen, in the City Club Building, 850 Euclid Ave. Looks like they're still working on the place. I had a cheeseburger and my co-worker had the chicken quesadillas. Both were decent.

TB's?  Tuberculosis?

Terry Bradshaw's?

Ha! I think tuberculosis imediately when I hear TB.

I think he wouldve been better served to stay on E.185th, a friend of mine lives up by LSB and we got food from there once. The little location there, known more as Hot Dogs and Hoagies, was fine.

I walked into this new one right after they opened downtown on E. 8th and didnt stay.

Speaking of e. 185th

The exterior is done at The Standard with their awniings up now. lookin good

I haven't walked out of my apt to confirm, nor did I notice when I came home from work, but my buddy told me BRGR9 on W9 has officially bit the dust, and the sign is even down. I'll look in the AM on my way to work
