Butcher and the Brewer's Eric Anderson keeps crafting creative beers

CLEVELAND, Ohio – At first glance, Eric Anderson looks more like an accountant than a brewer. With neatly trimmed hair and studious glasses, he isn't found behind the bar where he works, at Butcher and the Brewer, nestled smack in the middle of East Fourth Street.

As groups gather along the long bar and amid the communal tables, Anderson is a lone figure scampering amid the bright tanks, usually with a hose in his hands and rubber boots on as he scrubs and checks brewing levels.

Did the butcher side open yet?  I haven't been over there in a while.

No, the chef told me last week that they hope to have that open soon. They are going to wait on doing lunches until patio weather.

apparantly most of you've ordered the soup lately!

A few buddies and I once had a long conversation about soup and how it's not really a food. More like warm, flavored water that is eaten out of a bowl with a spoon. I can't remember the last time I ordered soup while out at a restaurant.

^i take it to mean that a lot of people are looking for soup places for lunch. I would agree that it isn't a cuisine.  There are a lot of places in Ohio that specialize in soup like Zoup in Cleveland/Solon or Stew Pot in Akron.  Certainly Paneras does a bang up business selling their soups throughout Ohio.  I would say we have a long "soup season" in Ohio, too.

^^I miss the Matzo Ball at Ruthie and Moes....  :|

He's always up on the latest and greatest. I'm excited for this one to open!

yeah if it was just popularity it would probably be pizza in every state.

I had a hard time imagining how much more pizza Indiana would have to consume in order to be considered disproportionate.

^ good question. other options must be limited and so pizza blows what little else is or can be ordered away? i dk.

Does anyone have an idea of an opening date for the Barrio in Gateway? Looks like it's close, but I haven't been able to find anything

Found the answer. They just tweeted out that it's Friday, January 30...in case anyone was wondering

I'm glad to see this place going in. I always thought PJs could be a lot better than it was. This seems like a really good fit.

I liked PJ's for the price. They had horrible hours on the weekend. Good luck to the Jack Flaps guys.

Anyone see that sign in Tremont for a Japanese Fondue restaurant over near Cookie & Cupcake?  Sounds interesting.

what in the heck is japanese fondue?

Ah. If it was called "hot pot" I would have understood. Ok. Thx.

^That's great a shabu shabu place is opening--can't wait to try them out. Also heard a new Indian place opened in Lakewood--on Detroit around Belle or Bunts--and that's its excellent. That's great news as the west side is sorely lacking quality Indian food. Its apparently the same owner as the Indian place further west on Detroit in Lakewood, which is generally hit or miss.

I love PJ's. Good food at great prices. When I take out-of-towners to eat locally and to help explain Cleveland, this is one of the places I take them. It's cheap, family, ethnic, basic food. And I've taken older, longtime Clevelanders who never heard of this place. They remarked it was a trip back in time to the types of diners and restaurants (and prices!) that were so common in Cleveland in the 1950s and 60s.

I understand downtown is changing and this family deserves to retire. But I'm always sad when an era comes to an end. Well, at least there's still other "throwback" places like Addy's, Market Cafe, Clifton Diner and The Shore.

I heard a rumor from a friend today. She heard the Harbor Inn has been sold and it is being torn down.  Does anyone know if this is true?  I really hope not because it's one of the places that makes Cleveland unique imo.  Also, it's the oldest bar in Cleveland if I remember correctly.

Always sad to see a long time business go, but the new Jack Flaps hours are exciting. Between that and Barrio, the 5th Street Arcades should liven up!

I've always been meaning to go to PJ's, but have never gotten around to it. Looks like I'll have to make a trip in the near future

Finally went there for breakfast this morning. Cool vibe, but the food was not very good and it was a bit pricier than I thought it would be. I won't be shedding a tear when it closes.

If that is the case then I would have to assume that something rather large would be built on the surface parking lot behind that building.  Who owns that lot?

Gut feeling tells me that it will not be demolished.  I really like that place so I hope it doesn't!

Hmmm interesting rumor.  No deed has been recorded yet, though.  Important to note that literally all the land around it is owned by the Jacobs/Nautica Group.  So this potentially may be the last piece before that group owns about 5 contiguous city blocks of land.  The optimist in me hopes this purchase/teardown foreshadows a larger new development project.  But the pessimist in me knows that Jacobs Group has been more interested in being a parking lot owner in downtown Cleveland than any meaningful developer.  And god knows we need more parking on the west bank of the flats!!!!

It's up for sale and has been for a long time.  I think he is asking $750k for the business and property.  Not sure if anyone has taken a serious interest.  Should be designated as a landmark....

This would be a travesty.

UPDATE: I spoke to someone who would definitely know and the Harbor Inn has not been sold although it is still up for sale.  Sorry if I caused any worry ;).

"Up for sale" doesn't mean much.  Sirna's, one of our competitors in Bedford, has been "for sale" since at least 2002.

Does it have historical landmark status?

i heard a few months ago that Coventry was their lowest revenue producer out of all the locations in the city.  Ral big bummer abour Golden Gate.  The sprawl continues.

The sprawl continues.

Well, it may not be that simple.  The article says:

"As for his decision to shutter the Coventry location, Lane points to neighborhoods like University Circle, Ohio City and Detroit Shoreway as challenges to the bottom line.

“The competition is insane, and the development dollars are going to certain neighborhoods,” he says."

I was talking to Declan, the owner of Parnell's, and he said much to the same effect.  His formerly very lucrative location on Lee was not doing so hot while his Playhouse Square location was flourishing.  He attributed this to the rise of downtown, University Cirlce, and the near west side neighborhoods.  It seems that Heights is getting a bad deal as parts of the inner city attract more of the entertainment crowd.  10-20 years ago, Heights was about as urban as you could get in Cleveland without facing some of the more overt nasty elements like crime and blight found in the inner city.  But now, you can get your urban fix in the actual inner city while crime and blight in some neighborhoods have receded, or at least there is a perception they are more under control.

*Edit: ^ probably applies to eastsiders more so than westsiders

I think the Coventry space could be split up into a few different stores.  It seems as if it was a combined space anyways.

Whooooaaa the Coventry location?!  That has been a fixture there as long as I can remember.  Crazy.  Hope they can fill the spot with something quality.

Winking Lizard to Close Coventry Spot, Open New Location at Golden Gate

Definitely. The back room of the Lizard had a sealed off door that looks like at some point it was an entrance to its own storefront.

Has anyone heard anything about Holy Craft on W 6th? Every time I've passed by it recently it's been closed, but I haven't seen signage indicated a permanent closure.

Why is it a bummer about a new Golden Gate location?  Do you know where Golden Gate is?  It's a very dense shopping center on Mayfield, actually one of the oldest shopping centers in the NATION.  The new Lizard location is going into the dead Mexican joint along 271.  Not sure any of that qualifies as sprawl

^My family member owns a business in Golden Gate and half my family works at Hilcrest.  Thats a mess of an area.  some of the busiest intersections, traffic, chains, etc.  Its good for Winking LIzard im sure, but its disappointing they are leaving a nice urban neighborhood for that.  Wont catch me out there.

It's a giant strip mall with a giant parking lot right off of a highway onramp.  How aren't you sure that all of that qualifies as sprawl?

The bigger concern is the actual location where it is going.  It is not really "in" Golden Gate" but moreso crunched between Golden Gate and the highway, and I'd say very few people are even aware there is anything back there.

The Winking Lizard has enough brand loyalty to overcome that location.    The Fridays there lasted for YEARS when Fridays was all the rage.

Lizard will do very well at that location in Golden Gate.  They need a large facility for the hordes.  I'm sure their signage will make it very obvious they are there.  I wonder about the Winks now becoming another Lizard off of Chagrin.  That is so close now to the Mayfield location and their HQ on Miles.  They should maybe use that site as their concept testing location.

Health-Focused Café Bon Appetite [sic] to Expand from University District to Coventry

Any reviews of the CSU location?  Sounds like a nice, useful addition to Coventry.

I went there for the first time a couple weeks ago. I got the chicken deluxe sandwich and it was very good. The food tastes fresh, it's all made to order, and it's relatively healthy. The only problem was that I was still hungry after my meal.
