^CEI is at 55 Public Square. 75 PS is the building next to it. Scene usually has its stuff right.

CEI was originally at 75 PS before they moved to 55 PS in the 50s.

I think the Zoup model is just not good. It's like Panera, but in mostly terrible locations and with food that isn't as "good." (good in quotes as I am not a Panera fan) There's one where I live and it's in one of the worst locations ever. I ordered food from them for a PTA dinner I planned this year and nobody had ever heard of them or knew they were there.

The DT Zoup wasn't a location problem per se but mediocre offerings (IMO) sandwiched in between other really more popular places. There is STILL a line at the Chipotle and Jimmy John's in close proximity every single day for people who want fast casual, and I'm sure Potbelly, which has way better food (for a chain) didn't help their business any. I'm not surprised they closed, though it's disappointing for those involved.

It may have been mentioned already, but Chili's is opening Downtown at Cleveland State's Student Center. Possibly replacing Bar UNO.

Yes, opening for the fall semester. It is indeed replacing Bar Uno

Mike Adams posted recently on FB that he's closing Rockefellers. Sorry that I never did get a chance to make it over there.

unfortunately it'll only be open sporadically for pop-up events that you need to pre-purchase tickets for. not really something that excites me. hoping he'll eventually transition it back to a full-time diner at some point.

He does but he can't own specific restaurants because his felony record prevents him from holding a liquor license. But there's ways around that.

True.

Though I still think the guy who tossed the sign through the HB window would be safer in jail.

Tony George once said in an interview that he doesn't particularly have any emotional ties to his restaurants. It's caused me to spend my money elsewhere.

I would too, since that would impact the quality.

But when someone does intentional damage, that's a different matter entirely to that mindset.

Tony George once said in an interview that he doesn't particularly have any emotional ties to his restaurants. It's caused me to spend my money elsewhere.

He doesn't have an emotional attachment to any of his businesses. While I understand the need for that in order to be able to fire people or to sell a business if you foresee a potential unrecoverable decline coming, I also look for a little humanity in my business owners. Offering just enough quality to make money is Tony's MO. He would rather destroy his competition by other means. Or even his own business if there's a financial benefit. He learned his business acumen from growing up around organized crime, an MO in which a mobster is more willing to set his business on fire and collect the insurance than to take a financial loss that will be difficult to recover from.

And that's why I like to throw support to the mom and pop places when I can. When people truly care, and they do have an emotional investment in their restaurant it really shows in 1. how a place looks and 2. how you are treated as a patron.

We are lucky there are so many good little bars and restaurants in CLE.

Brewnuts donut shop is moving out of their space on Professor Ave to somewhere in Ohio City or Detroit Shoreway. I guess their spot in Tremont was temporary with a storefront grant from Tremont West. Congrats to them on their new permanent space.  Sucks they are leaving the neighborhood though.

From what I heard, BrewNuts will be spending the summer up at Put-in-Bay, then afterwards will settle on a permanent location in Cleveland.

I heard that Brewnuts is moving to Lorain Ave near Platform.

^ Yes, that has been their plan. They originally wanted to go in the basement of the Grocery building but there were some issues with that so they are now looking elsewhere. Last I heard, they were looking to rent a space somewhere near Platform.

^ I know their top choice...it is not in Solo.  But they have not signed on the dotted line yet, so it could fall through.  Things are heating up though.

^ they have done a 180 in my opinion since opening.  Use to be one of my favorite spots! they have jacked the prices up noticeably and sometimes I feel their food is not as precisely prepared, very greasy and hard to stomach at times.  I think they may have tried to capitalize on their popularity by charging more and perhaps cutting corners on quality.  I actually LOVED Helvetica the sister restaurant and wish that they put resources into that concept...but it closed.

I went there for the first time in March, and I thought it was really good, but the prices have kept me from going back there regularly.

The wife and I went there over the winter and loved what we got. I don't know if they've done a 180 but the place was busy and the food was good.

That place is one of my favorites!  Great food and speedy service.  I have never had a bad experience there.  It's really not the pricey either, not sure why some would think it is.  Especially when you consider it is a BYOB place with no corking/bottle fee.  How could you not love a restaurant that lets you BYOB?!?  :drunk:

Does anyone know of other CLE area restaurants that are BYOB?

Sushi 86 on Prospect downtown is BYOB. I'm a big fan of that place too.

If there are, they will be pricey or not in business very long.  Or both.

Most restaurants that have liquor licenses break even on the food and make money on the alcohol.

I fortunately haven't had quality issues, but yes, I would like to go in there and have more food options available for aroiund 5.00.

I loved Helvetica too. But their hours were somewhat strange. Since bela dubby closed/turned into Taco Tontos I would've guessed there was ample room for another coffee shop/cafe/hangout like the Root (constantly overcrowded!) but every time I went into Helvetica it seemed like they were closing early.

Sushi 86 is no longer BYOB, as they now have their liquor license, and some nice Japanese Whiskey as well.

Grumpy's in Tremont is byob and a brunch favorite(champagne for mimosas!)

I'm a bit worried that this place needs a shot in the arm.

i love the food mobs idea. we used to do something like that in the early chowhound blog days around nyc, it was a lot of fun. thats so cool they brought 60 people to a cleveland somali restaurant last time. you have to make arrangements in advance, especially with the more off the radar ethnic restaurants so they can handle it, but its well worth the efforts. i hope that grows in popularity -- it seems to be! columbian food is great too once in awhile, if you have a big appetite.

Yeah I can only imagine it's a tough business environment for these mom and pops. There are so many great places that are just off the radar.

You can BYOB at hidden gem La Campagna.

Im not sure if this was mentioned previously, but Pizza Fire (http://www.pizzafire.com) is coming to old Zoup! Spot on Euclid Ave. I saw the sign in the window this evening.

Chain leaves, local place opens up.  Win.

Mm, pizza. I'm excited about that.

^Interesting!  Along with the new place by the Lockkeepers' folks that will be in the ground floor of 75 Public Square, seems like we're on the verge of much-needed pizza renaissance Downtown.

This sounds interesting and fun:

Don't know where to eat? Ask Wheedle

If Wheedle can convince Clevelanders to use the app it's about to launch, the chic restaurant Lago finally will have a way to target those people who sit around debating where they want to go for dinner.

The Cleveland-based startup company is in the process of recruiting restaurants, bars and other entertainment venues that want to use the new app, which works like Groupon, but in reverse: Instead of getting a steady stream of daily deals, people type in what they want to eat or do, then establishments offer them deals and perks in an effort to win their business.

The establishment would then pay Wheedle a fee for each person who shows up.

Catch up on these stories and others you might have missed over the past week from Fairview Park, Lakewood, North Olmsted, Olmsted Falls and Olmsted Township.

Smōk barbecue restaurant planned for Lakewood's Madison Avenue: Lakewood resident Robert Togliatti plans to open a barbeque restaurant called Smōk on Madison Avenue this year. I'll have to check it out. Only two more old-school casual breakfast-lunch "diners" remain in downtown's central business district -- Addy's and Huron Square Deli. Is that correct?

^ Sammy's in the old National City Bank building.

Sammy's?? Never heard of it. The only Sammy's I've heard of was the chain of classy downtown restaurants -- basically the 1990s version of Swingos of the 1970s.
