Sammy's?? Never heard of it. The only Sammy's I've heard of was the chain of classy downtown restaurants -- basically the 1990s version of Swingos of the 1970s.

What?! It's right past the check in counter for the Holiday Inn Express (if entering from Euclid) or just to your left when entering from Vincent. It's run by Sammy and usually his son is there working. I think their breakfast is better than P.J.'s was.

EDIT: Here's a picture I took last week of Jack Flaps before it opened. I went by it today around lunch time and it had a pretty good crowd.

Wow, I've never ventured past the hotel's front-in desk. Clearly I need to!! Thanks!

Bombay Chaat (which has been "coming soon" since I moved back to Cleveland last summer) is finally open at the corner of East 21st and Euclid. They have a pretty wide ranging menu, although as of right now they are only serving menu items after 3pm. Before 3:00 they have an all you can eat lunch buffet for $9.99. I'm no connoisseur of Indian food, but I thought it was quite good. The customer service is very good as well.

Here's their website: http://www.bombaychaat.net/

OMG thank you for posting this. I had heard nothing about this. $10 lunch buffet and within like two blocks of my job? Yes, please.

Houlihans closed in Tower City?

I was looking at google maps, don't ask, and noticed that it said that Houlihans was closed.  Any insight?  Maybe we can get something good and local in there?

Huh? I ate at Houlihans just last week!

What a great addition to the neighborhood!  We are stoked for you to open (and to slurp some oysters) https://t.co/48MVHQk5pD

It looks like it has in fact closed.  Yelp, Google, Foursquare, and Facebook all list it as closed and it doesn't show up on their website when searching for locations.

This place began work over two years ago, taking forever...still might another year but it should be a gem when it opens

Funny that my friends were in the process of buying this building before some issues came up....otherwise it could very well be a Taco Tontos.

Damn. Would've loved tacos over this place. I assume the issues are that the building was a hole and needed two-three years of work. And it was overpriced.

Actually, it was more of a financial fraud issue lol. That's all I can say about that.

I don't understand how it could take so long.

I know nothing about the economics of opening a restaurant but it seems odd how long this has taken.

puris, dosas, uttappam pancakes and indian-chinese mirch? and the earlier lunch buffet? thats outstanding. it sure covers all my indian food bases. we will have to hear your review take on this!

Well, I went yesterday. They were very, very friendly and welcoming to everyone. Two different people came by (the whole place appears to be staffed by women) to ask how things were and one encouraged us to come back for dinner, describing different dishes they had. My dining companion was so impressed she went back again today for lunch, and I admit if I hadn't had plans I would have considered it.

I had a couple very, very minor dings not really worth much. One of the dishes had veggies in it that included likely pre-frozen string bean type green beans and I came upon several woody and unchewable pieces I had to pick out of my mouth. Some of these were hard enough I would be worried about an intestinal puncture, which is a concern of mine because I have accelerated digestion due to major internal plumbing type GI surgery. But no harm done. Also, the cauliflower was really, really different and I really liked it. But it had big seeds in it which, while gave it amazing flavor, continually got painfully stuck in between my molars while chewing. But these are minor things.

A couple of things were a little too soupy for me. Thinner than they should have been, I think, so I skipped one and put the other on top of naan. But everything else was really good, very flavorful and enjoyable. They apparently changed the offerings today, which is nice and means they are making things fresh, which is appealing. I will definitely be going back soon. It is VERY close to my work, perfect walking distance for me to feel like I went for a walk but that didn't take all day for me to get there and back.

I follo wup once I've been there a 2nd time and tried other stuff. My friend said it is the best indian they've had. I disagree with that, but I did think it was very good.

ah nice review. as i recall this place has been coming for quite a long time, correct? i remember seeing a sign for it awhile ago. anyway, i hope you and others get a chance to try the main menu and review it. if its all good you could really eat around that over quite a few visits.

Great Scott Tavern opens in Euclid, brings a lively vibe to former post office

Great Scott Tavern's opening in Euclid last week brings a welcome dimension to the city's dining scene -- and a fresh, lively vibe to a handsome if austere former U.S. Postal Service facility.

Visiting the new restaurant, at 21801 Lakeshore Blvd., I discovered a sprawling space filled with sunlight and activity. Floors in the entry way have the look of light, hand-hewn hickory, and decor is contemporary and neutral. Old-fashioned Edison bulbs provide subtle lighting while punctuating the space visually.

The 7,500 square feet that Great Scott occupies is divided between two stories. Public space is so far confined to the street level rooms, but the upstairs area will eventually accommodate patio guests who may have been rained out as well as permitting expansion for private dining and events.

GREAT SCOTT TAVERN: 21801 Lakeshore Blvd., Euclid; greatscotttavern.com, 216-417-3019. The restaurant is open for dinner from 4-10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 4-11 p.m. Fri-Sat. Though currently closed on Sundays, brunch will be offered in the near future.

Edwin's is pretty well known locally. Been lots of write ups about them.

I'm eager to try it.  In addition to the great mission, the food and service get rave reviews on line (FWIW) so it seems like serious culinary place too.

thats great to see. there used to be a similar kind of restaurant in columbus, except they focused on training recovering addicts or handicapped or something like that, i don't remember.

We go pretty often as we like Brandon and his mission here (the outstanding Fromager from L'Albatros).  The food and service are usually good but can be hit or miss as every person is trained in every position.  So somebody good in the kitchen is not necessaily going to be a good server.  But Brandon has an extremely watchful eye, so things never go too far astray.

Not really a restaurant, but still pretty cool.  Love me a good affogato.

http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/innovationnews/Conniesaffogato070815.aspx

The mobile affogato shop will be equipped with a specially-made bicycle – complete with a freezer, stove and “storefront” – with help from Soulcraft Woodshop and CWRU’s ThinkBox.  Espresso will be brewed on the bike, while he plans to get his ice cream from a local supplier.

Another restaurant is opening in the old One Walnut space in the Ohio Savings Plaza building. Most recently this was Table 9.  The new place will be called "Cest La Vie Restaurant and Lounge" ... We will see!

Interesting. I wonder who is involved with that.

Just came across that yesterday on Craigslist: http://cleveland.craigslist.org/fbh/5121140700.html

Awesome! Between this and  Pizza 216 on the Euclid side the Arcade is showing signs of life.

Once the Leader and Garfield buildings are full of residents (and hopefully a new tower above 515 Euclid), I think there will be enough people living in close proximity to the Arcade to allow some new retail stores to open there.

Meat the new tenant at 200 Public Square

July 18, 2015 UPDATED 18 HOURS AGO

A big name is about to fill a big, long-empty space at downtown Cleveland’s 200 Public Square office building.

Ruth’s Chris Steak House is bound for the former Frank & Pauly’s space on the Superior Avenue side of the skyscraper’s atrium, Norfolk, Va.-based building owner Harbor Group International announced. Ruth’s Hospitality Group, the publicly traded owner and franchisor of 146 Ruth’s Chris locations, confirmed the plan.

...Although the Winter Park, Fla.-based chain confirmed committing to the space, a spokesman declined to provide details on the opening date and store size. However, a presentation for investors said the company invests at least $3.5 million in each location. The sites generate about $4 million yearly in sales.

Another steakhouse downtown...I bet Urban Farmer and Red are both cringing!

This place is SPENDY...last time I at the one in Portland, the 6 of us ended up with a $1K+ tab.    For investors to drop $3-$4 million for this addition strongly illustrates Downtown Cleveland has turned the corner.

If I'm not mistaken, RC used to be in Beachwood.  Pricey is an understatement, but we used to eat there when I went to Memphis for corporate stuff and they probably made the best steaks I have ever had.

Woodmere*, although I think they marketed themselves as being in Beachwood. The location was at Eton

I like that they are returning to downtown instead of back to the suburbs. That's a great sign. Amazing how many steakhouses we have but I have no doubt this will be a big success and awesome to continue to activate the public square area and Superior.

^ I suppose my thoughts are similar to when Bar Louie announced it was coming to the WHD. I wasn't particularly excited about that establishment coming downtown and was concerned about it poaching business from local places. But, at the same time, I was glad to see a national company willing to make an investment in downtown.

Im not worried about Red or Urban Farmer.  With our aggressive ramp up in marketing the city and getting events, we need more places.  The trend shows that tourist dollars have increased and will likely continue to increase.  Have you tried to get a table at a place downtown during an event?  Its impossible.  The republican national convention and the NBA finals are not the "end" of large groups of people coming to this city.  In fact, I would suspect there will be more quantity instead of quality moving forward.  These people need places to eat, if there are no tables, they will probably complain about that there are not enough options in Cleveland.

I agree, Cleveland has plenty of local restaurants and I believe the city does need a few more national chains downtown.  Out of town visitors tend to look for familiarity and Cleveland still lacks some of the basics.

The original Ruth's Chris at Eton closed at the time of the Eton expansion 11-12 years ago... when Eton allowed another steakhouse (Fleming's) to build in the center

.. Rumor was the Fleming's building was detached from the rest of strip, including Rith's Chris, to get by a clause that said no competing steakhouses in the center.

As for cost, I think all the big steakhouses have similar $40s/$50s a la carte steaks...

I can't remember but isn't John Q's supposed to be opening up again?  Possibly more of a sports bar theme? Q's???

^ o rilly? that would be very good news, its a great location.

I went there on Friday with 2 other families for the smoked prime rib.  $21 and pretty good.

He showed my kid and his friend the pig they were going to roast on Sunday.  They are open for BBQ lunch on Friday but prime Rib not ready till dinnertime.  They had this nice looking entree called a BBQ Sundae that for $10 was a sampling plate of all the meats he was doing that day.  They also have ribs, brisket, pork, sausage and some other things.
