Cleveland has developed into a foodie's paradise, but while Northeast Ohio's restaurant industry has grown rapidly, the supply of skilled culinary professionals has not kept up with demand. Jeff Larson, CEO of the 2016 Republican National Convention, tells the crowd at the Crain's Convention Watch event what set the city apart from other regions vying for the convention. And the Downtown Cleveland Alliance releases its annual promotion video.

Area restaurants are desperate for skilled help

October 18, 2015 UPDATED 2 DAYS AGO

By LEE CHILCOTE

Dan Bryan has a goal of one day owning his own food truck. Yet for now, the 22-year-old Lakewood resident works as a line cook at Butcher and the Brewer on East 4th Street and takes classes at Cuyahoga Community College's Hospitality Management Center.

Bryan's hectic schedule has him getting up early to take RTA's Red Line to Public Square, taking classes all day and working at night. Sometimes, he only gets a few hours of sleep before he has to turn around and do it all over again.

Yet he believes his hard work will pay off, in part because he loves what he does and he could have his pick of jobs in Cleveland's growing food scene.

“It's hard to find good quality cooks that have a passion for the industry,” he said of the worker shortage affecting Northeast Ohio restaurants. “That's a lot of what we're doing here — creating better restaurants, making the culinary scene more like New York or San Francisco or other big cities.”

It looks like Downtown Pacers on E. 12th has finally bit the dust.

If you love unclean beer lines, high turnover in staff and absentee ownership, you will greatly miss Pacers.

It's been closed for a while now.  Such an awful place.

^I was in there once. It seemed awful, I agree. However, as a city, we need places like that Downtown---seems like almost everything now is expensive and trendy---no 'awful' or shady places which add character to the city.

Perhaps I can direct you to McCarthy's on the West Bank. While not quite downtown it's awful enough to be worth that extra mile.

There are lots of places downtown that aren't expensive or trendy- for sports bars alone there are two Winking Lizards, City Tap, Huron Point, 2 Panini's, Harry Buffalo, The Clevelander, a BW3 on the way, and probably a couple I'm not even bothering to remember.  Pacer's was just trashy and has lousy food/beer selection.  I don't see how it added any "character".

^You're forgetting some of the best ones!  Johnny's Little Bar, Nick's, Moriarty's, Leader, Ontario Street Cafe, and the Map Room.

Where's the BW3 opening?

I saw they have the old Claddaugh's at Legacy Bulldozed and will build the Capital Grille anew.

Well that seems wasteful.....

Suburban 'Merica!    Better build something new before the locals thing the place is going downhill and move 20 miles further out....

Yeah, I'm not into hashtags, but this seems like a perfect opportunity for "#'Merica".

What are you people smoking? Capital Grille is awesome and that little shopping mecca lacks a good steakhouse.

Or you're complaining about construction? Forum darlings Trader Joe's and Whole Foods almost always build from ground up with new branches, so who cares if Capital Grille does the same.

Should have rehabbed the old Claddaugh into loft apartments - huge missed opportunity.  /s

yeah otto mosers and the rathskeller moved off e4th and mosers upped their game, but what about the rathskeller? it moved to prospect, but i dk if it is still around?

Chicago's Home of Chicken & Waffles, a popular Soul Food restaurant with three locations in Chicago, will open its next location in Downtown Cleveland. The owners say they have been following our city’s progress and couldn’t wait to dip their toes in our bubbling market.

The restaurant will be claiming the 4,000-square-foot space at 1144-46 Prospect Avenue, which is the current home of the Rathskeller. That longstanding bar, if you recall, previously was displaced from its previous home on East Fourth Street by redevelopment.

Hmm...The Rathskeller...spent a month in there one opening day.

The Rathskeller is the last Cleveland bar I smoked cigarettes in... 2 years ago.

I was actually just meaning to ask about this place. That article is from April and I haven't seen or heard anything since. I'm particularly interested because I now live across the street from there

At first I thought this was going to be the cafe operator in public square but the website indicates this will open in 200 Public Square.

'Bloom Bakery will soon fill the air with sweet aromas'

"The aromas of fresh baked bread and pastries will soon waft through the streets of Cleveland when Bloom Artisan Bakery and Café opens two locations next year. In a social enterprise venture, Towards Employment, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping low income and disadvantaged adults achieve self-sufficiency through employment, announced last week that it will open bakeries in both Public Square and on the Cleveland State campus"

Herb 'n Twine Sandwich Co. Days from Opening in Former Speak in Tongues Spot

It appears that one of the projects we’ve been following since last spring is nearing the finish line. Herb 'n Twine Sandwich Co., located in the old Speak in Tongues space at 4309 Lorain Avenue, is on track to open before the end of the month.

Owner Brendon Messina, who last worked alongside chef Jill Vedaa at Rockefeller’s in Cleveland Heights, describes the shop as a casual quick-serve stop for local residents, commercial tenants, and anybody else looking for a wholesome, delicious lunch or dinner.

“There are a lot of places to sit down and eat in Ohio City, but there aren’t a lot of grab-and-go spots,” he explains.

If it wasn't mentioned already, Arby's is going into the bottom of the Langston along Chester Avenue. Good to see that the interest is there!

Was listening to WTAM this morning - and Joe Crea from the PD is on weekly - and got a phone call just as he was going to discuss (Cincinnati's beloved) Graeter's ice cream shops apparently coming to CLE. I know one is on the map for Pinecrest, but did anyone hear Joe's specific comments on Graeter's (timing, location, details)?

I just noticed that literally 5 minutes ago. I'm kind of embarrassed by my level of excitement for that. The campus district could really use a Taco Bell now though...

I believe one is going into Crocker Park

Happy Hour: Crop Kitchen in Cleveland's University Circle an eclectic offering (photos)

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- This East Side satellite might not have the grandiose splendor of that other Crop. After all, it's located in a new development, Uptown, rather than an opulent circa-1929 bank. That's not to say that the Happy Hour menu at Crop Kitchen doesn't have warmth – or even an ornate charm.

The Chile Devilled Eggs ($5) make for a fine opener – zesty with a sweet-hot  kick, but lighter than you'd imagine. They dovetail well with the Veggie Sushi Roll ($5), which has a lightness to it and delivers refreshing texture and taste.

This is the second happy hour write-up that I've seen for Crop Kitchen. Still haven't made it there.

Best suggestions for brunch on the west side of Cleveland?  Picking up my father off of W. 85th tomorrow, being an east sider, I'm not sure about some of the "hidden gems" on the west side.  My in-laws like Jack Flaps, and that's definitely a possibility.  Any other ideas?  Thanks in advance.

Grumpys Cafe in Tremont has great breakfast/brunch.

Also Lucky's.  Unfortunately most brunch places are on Sundays...Thursday I would say your options are: Jack Flaps, Bon Bon, Grumpys, Luckys, Latitute 41 N

I would only recommend Lucky's if you want everything EXACTLY as is on the menu. I personally never go there because of their strictness. Le Petit Triangle in Ohio City is excellent.

I personally enjoy Grumpys for breakfast burritos. Latitude 48 has great breakfast croissant sandwiches and breakfast quesadillas. Townhall has great breakfast sandwiches. Borderline has amazing mexican themed breakfasts (cash only). The Diner on Clifton is also a good place but is small. And Bon Bon is amazing but a little expensive. I could go on but i'll leave you with that...

Petit Triangle, hands down! Affordable and outstanding.

If you're coming form 85th St, Latitude 41 N---on Detroit around 54 or so. Great pancakes and good prices.

I'll third Le Petit Triangle.  I love that place any time of day, but it's especially good for breakfast or dessert.

There's numerous places near West 117th and Detroit and Clifton.... The Shore, My Friends, Diana's and Clifton Diner. All have great breakfasts/brunches/lunches but my favorite is The Shore because a nice Greek couple has run it since 1986, five years after Angelo and Tina came to America. They are friendly, love to laugh, and their food is good and fast. I only wish they stayed open later. The Shore closes at 3 pm.

FYI: The Shore is at 12009 Detroit Ave, Lakewood, OH.

Graeter's expands northward with new scoop shop

Graeter's, the 145-year-old Cincinnati-based ice cream brand, will continue its expansion of retail outlets with a new store in Cleveland opening this summer.

"Our first Cleveland scoop shop will allow us to share our love for authentic ice cream with the community while staying true to our vision of quality and integrity,” Richard Graeter, CEO of the 145-year-old company, said in a press release.

Man Stark is working triple overtime on his phony urban utopia. Makes me thankful for those doing the hard work in the city. Geis, Wolstein, MRN, K&D, Weston, Millennia, First Interstate and so on...sorry just feeling a wee bit skeptical of Stark right now...

^ It may be a "phony urban utopia" but it's also a major investment that is bringing in a lot of money for Stark. I don't see any reason we should be skeptical of Stark just because he's working to maintain his other existing properties.

As a non-city-dweller who has warmed way up to urban living and projects because of the this board - it's attitudes like this, that pretty much nothing suburban could possibly be worthwhile - that frustrate me/turns me off/makes me want to stop listening to the urban living message that so many are proponents of here.  Hey, not that you care what I think - but you could potentially turn a lot more suburbanites into city-believers if your supported urban living (as you have me) - while not denigrating suburban living just because it's not perhaps your style (though you certainly don't have to support it).

Remember that suburban projects have paid the bills for Gets, Stark and others... that have allowed them to consider and proceed with city projects.  An inconvenient truth?

And the Cuyahoga County sales tax is what funds our transit system--so good to have him investing within the County

An inconvenient truth?

There are far too many of these on here for it to be a place for balanced views and understanding, and as gross as it is and as bad the delivery, Cleveland.com actually has more "reality" on it.

Clearly I have both done statistical analysis for the Feds and been reading this board for far too long!

Definitely grateful for this. It's like losing your wallet in a mugging but getting to keep your cell phone.

I just wonder what places like Crocker Park will look like in 20 years.    The suburbs don't have a great track record of maintaining and saving.  It's easier to just build new.    Another developer will come along and deliver "convenience" with a new development in Avon Lake and BOOM--Crocker Park ghetto....  :-P
