Two late-night spots coming to downtown... first up and most notable, it seems DPDough is moving into 230 Euclid Avenue where Jimmy John's used to be. According to the door they will be open until 4AM

Where? From who?

^That news was posted a couple of week ago.  Garfield Bldg.

In my mind it only makes senses.  Downtown is starting to get inundated with higher end steak houses.  How many can it really support? (Red, XO, Mortons, Ruth Chris, Hyde Park, Urban Farmer)

According to Jeff Ruby on Twitter, he said they are looking for another location in Cleveland

was disappointed to learn the chef of crop kitchen in uptown left. we had really gotten into that place and it's definitely not the same.

At long last, seems like Arcadian opened yesterday (if I read this right):

First look: Long-anticipated Arcadian bar-restaurant opens in Detroit-Shoreway (photos)

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cory Hess was sitting in a bar, drinking a beer, looking out the window when an idea popped into his head. In between sips, he never imagined that it would end up this elaborate – or, frankly, that it would ever happen.

Well, today is the day it comes to life.

Cross posted in the Van Aken thread:

Over the weekend I received the summer issue of Shaker Life magazine which gives several updates on the Van Aken District.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Jonathan Sawyer will opening a restaurant in the development as well as handling all future food related leasing in the new renamed food hall (now named after one of the Van Sweringen brothers).

There were a few additional details, but I don’t have the magazine handy at the moment.

Oddly I have seen no mention of this anywhere else…..

well that's exciting. love greenhouse but I've been pretty disappointed with his other branchings. hoping this will change that.

I think he's learned and done a tremendous job. Trentina is a wonderful spot

This was posted on Cleve.com and I posted in the Van Aken thread, but will post here as well.

More on Jonathan Sawyer's involvement at Van Aken:

Jonathon Sawyer will curate Van Aken District's food menu, open Shaker Heights eatery

Jonathon Sawyer, a local chef who has won national accolades, will help craft the food and beverage lineup across the project, which could include a handful of sit-down restaurants and a food hall housing 15 to 20 stalls. Sawyer also plans to open a restaurant – his fourth, and his first outside the city of Cleveland – at the mixed-use development..................

The 22,000-square-foot food hall, which both Sawyer and Palmisano compared to Union Market in Washington, D.C., might hold a few stores and two restaurants, in addition to stalls. In October, Detroit-based watchmaker Shinola announced that it will open a store there. Other tenants include Rising Star Coffee and Luna bakery.

RMS has mentioned only a few additional retailers, including Mitchell's Ice Cream and Chipotle, which will share a small building near The Fresh Market with dry cleaner D.O. Sommers.

^^Sorry the Mad Greek is closing.  It's a Heights institution.

Crop Uptown is closed- can't say I'm surprised, few times I went the service was awful.

Wow, but also not surprised.  I'm sure Schimoler made back his $2,000 he spent destroying the space/furnishing with particle board.

He certainly isn't good at controlling quality beyond 1 establishment.

^Too bad. That's now already 2 eatery failures in this space in just the 4 years of Uptown's existence.

And health of Flats Crop group of 3 restaurants is (as a passerby) questionable.

I have always had great food at Crop Bistro but beyond that it seems like his other restaurants are just OK...

My anecdotal observations point to this as well. They never seem to be crowded, even when the other establishments in FEB are jam packed.

In other news, 811 on Prospect looked like it was open last night. I don't know if it was just a soft launch, or if it's fully open to the public yet. Sorry for the blurry picture.

I had an amazing meal at Crop Sticks but I was admittedly a few drinks in and probably would have thought a cart gyro was amazing.

As much as I dislike the generic "811" as a restaurant name, the sign and space sure look nice.

Indeed it looks good. If you can retrofit that space, I'd guess there are quite a few parking garages around town that deserve equal consideration.

What ever the food and service will be like (and I hope both are great btw), 811's building redo is very sexy; really draws you in just to check it out... From 811 to Alley Cat to Coastal Taco to Rebol to Red to Nuevo, and others, in terms of building architecture and maximizing setting, Cleveland's new restaurants are on a serious roll.

^ Glad you mentioned Coastal. I was very put off by the simplified, down scaled renders, as many others were. But the design is terrific; it welcomes the surroundings exceedingly well and provides for a great, casual, waterside atmosphere.

And Coastal Taco's interior, which includes a large fireplace, is nearly as dramatic as its waterside setting--beautifully done.  Now if only the quality of its food and service could match the building and setting ...

^ The thing I miss most about living in DC is having a preponderance of Ethiopian restaurants around town. I'm glad that Cleveland is adding another one.

I went to Table Top last night and noticed that Weenie a Go Go on W. 25th had closed. Couldn't find any mentions of the restaurant on here, but they were basically a hipster/vintage version of Old Fashioned Hot Dogs crossed with Happy Dog's "gourmet" hot dog. Never got around to going there and never really heard anything about the place, so probably won't be missed. Also noticed that 1822 W. 25th has a permit to establish a carry out pizza place (next to what used to be Johnnyville Woods).

I think this has been closed for a while (and not actually open for very long).  I'm sure it had nothing to do with the owners.. relationship.... with the landlord going sour.

^ I didn't care for the place. Hot dogs were nothing special and wayyyy overpriced.

Per Scene, Sounds like more Crop closings are imminent:

Crop Rocks and Crop Sticks to Close in September

Following on the heels of the recent shuttering of Crop Kitchen at Uptown in University Circle, Scene just learned that Crop Rocks and Crop Sticks in Flats East Bank will close on September 11. This is according to an employee that works there and wishes to remain anonymous.

http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2016/08/12/crop-rocks-and-crop-sticks-to-close-in-september

Not surprised. It seemed like none of these concepts were able to capture the success of Crop Bistro. It's too bad but they obviously had issues. I look forward to what will replace them. Those are large prominent spaces to fill.

It sounds like they weren't making a lot of money, and that they had hoped to make money with catering (though not sure why, at that location) and it didn't pan out. I see nothing nefarious here.

It's odd. The place was packed every time I went there (weekly). Very sad!

FINALLY - A Cleveland location!!!

Melt announces Public Square location

If you're looking for a grilled cheese fix downtown, soon you can look to Public Square.

Melt has just announced its plans to open a Public Square location this September.

Called "Cafe 200 Public Square," the location will open Sept. 12 in the Huntington Building with a "quick service" concept" similar to the brand's Progressive Field and Case Western University locations.

Hours will be Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

I like this idea a lot. Way better than the direction I initially thought the new owners would take.

Café 200 Public Square to feature Melt and more

August 25, 2016 UPDATED 4 HOURS AGO

By LYDIA COUTRÉ

Melt Bar & Grilled will open a location downtown in a new multibrand café on Public Square.

Eurest, which operates cafes and catering services across the country, will open Café 200 Public Square on Sept. 12 in the space formerly occupied by Kafeteria. Eurest is a division of Compass Group North America. Zach Bruell sold Kafeteria to Compass Group, cleveland.com reported earlier this month.

Normal business hours will be 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. The café also will include the following:

Eurest operates our cafeteria at work - they do a really nice job.  No complaints from me!

I heard last night that Tremont Taphouse has expansion plans.  Nothing official regarding the expansion, but it was confirmed that they purchased the house next door (approximately 2596 Scranton) and are in the process of gutting it for likely demolition.  This is one of my favorite restaurant's in the city so I hope any future expansion doesn't kill the atmosphere or the quality.

The pub at beachwood place mall has closed after 2 1/2 years. That leaves the prime front restaurant space again maybe a seasons 52 Grill can go there now or a Cooper's hawk?? Would love to see either one of those two

Rumour has it that, in addition to Zach Bruell selling Kafeteria, he has also sold Cowell & Hubbard to another large restaurant group in town who will turn it into a seafood themed restaurant
