Interesting east suburban restaurant shakeup this week and in recent weeks.

- Legacy's mediocre Granite City closed this week - as this chain has other closings and lawsuits in past weeks. Could a Restoration Hardware next-gen mansion (orig planned for Beachwood Place and toying with Pinecrest) end up in that space+others? Maybe...

is rh next gen mansion like one of these below?

funny i've never been inside the manhattan meatpacking district version and its like a block away from me.

also funny that no one ever seems to be in there when i walk by, but clevelandy arhaus around the corner always has people inside - ha!

i have been in the o.g. los angeles rh version though --- yes, it was very, very nice.

people would really go for something like that, with maybe a small restaurant inside or on the roof.

these versions are many levels above the old rh shops and definitely a destination retail type place.

i see there is one in easton in columbus, too, or one on the way.

Yes. $2.5MM land purchase. Appears they just broke ground.

Yes, RH next-gen in CLE would be similar to that one but a new build more like 40K square feet. And yes restaurants are a big part of this they are even retrofitting earlier versions of these mansions with restaurants like Denver. Note: The Manhattan store will do $100MM business this year I've read. Restoration hardware large stores defy logic in the current retail age but are doing big business so they are building six or seven a year they say now expanding their original plans.

Some of the earliest versions of this they put in old buildings, but the new construction are generally what they're doing in mid-sized cities. They've recently opened in Kansas City planned for Pittsburgh opening in Columbus soon just open in Minneapolis - ending Boston in Chicago for instance they taking over classic old buildings.

One of these stores was originally in the plans for the Beachwood Place exterior/Richmond expansion that didn't happen, and was in early leasing plans for Pinecrest. An old restoration store is give or take 10K square feet as comparison.

Here's the restaurant/galley in Minneapolis as an example of what to expect:

I was scrolling on google maps looking for a decent little spot near Parma to meet some family this week... and I stumbled across Peabody’s on Pearl and Fulton in Cleveland. Look at the owner’s responses to negative Google reviews!!! Lol.

i guess their urinals have pictures of Obama and Hillary

^ Peak Parma right there!

FWIW - we’re fans of Das Schnitzelhaus on Pearl. I can’t speak to their politics though.

I’ve spent my 10 or so years in Cleveland either on the east-side or downtown. I still can never figure out where the hell I am when I go southwest and make mistakes like this all the time. Much to the chagrin of my girlfriend, who is originally from Parma!

As someone who grew up in north Parma near Old Brooklyn a little sensitive as well, but sadly most of the stereotypes are true and the SW suburbs are ........... not the pride and joy of the region. Lol.

What is going in next to Cooper's Hawk in Orange?  The foundation outline is visible, and work is progressing rapidly.

Bloom Bakeries are closing today:

https://bloombakery.com/announcement/

Sad but not at all surprising - they opened with a great menu and at least at the 200 Public Square location, the employees were engaging, friendly, etc. At some point they switched downgraded the menu, got rid of a lot of interesting options and the three times I gave them a try, it was a comedy of errors.

^ My experience exactly. I really wanted this venture to succeed and it started out so well, but about 12 months in it all started to unravel.

Something different than the Drury Inn and Suites? Because that’s the multiple story building going up

Now Bloom, plus the PizzaFire and JGumbo spots all remain empty in that area on Euclid... hope they dont remain empty for a long time

The optimist in me wants to believe there's some master plan for these spaces, but who knows. There's no reason that one of the busiest spots in downtown should have such a large number of vacancies. If we lose Taco Bell we know there's a problem lol

Yes, the new construction is between Cooper's Hawk and the I-271 northbound ramp to Harvard, and it has just started.  The Drury is behind both plots.

It's (another) BJ's Brewhouse. Prior to this, there was serious talk with the Chuy's Tex-Mex chain for the spot - so expect to see them end up somewhere in the area soon. (Good - because I drove 5 hrs roundtrip to Columbus a few weeks ago specifically for their *fajitas*)

chuys would be a nice get to have around.

i am surprised they would be venturing this far north.

Looks like Bloom might not be gone for long:

Bloom Bakery said it will shut down, but its original co-founders, backed by investors, want to take over and revive it

Quote

"We have a robust group of investors who are eager to ensure that the business will be back up and running as soon as possible," Fahey said, "and we hope to work with current Bloom Bakery staff and board."

^That's great news and also goes some way to explaining why the business seemed to go off the rails a little, as commented on upthread.

My hovercraft is full of eels

I don't even know where this belongs on here (but it's a restaurant, so...) but I absolutely love this tagline, it's like a wonderful rag on the #1 NEO complaint despite us having TOO MUCH parking:

Now that is funny... and clever! ?

Btw, it's not quite a restaurant, but a lot of us downtown workers go there for lunch- I was talking with one of the folks at Heinens and she said the downtown store has a new manager. I don't know what all could change food wise, but she made it sound like he's a bit younger and it should be interesting (he also had a food truck out on Euclid for the staff today to 'celebrate', so he must be a pretty good guy!)

Also, looks like Bloom at CSU will be back up and running by January (Public Square isn't part of this as of now)

I pass by this location sometimes on Woodland Ave where this restaurant will open.  Woodland is a pretty cool Street as you pass by Woodland Cemetery of which they are currently restoring the gatehouse. We need more people like the woman who is opening up this up because all her friends told her to open it up in the suburbs. I know I will definitely give it a try once it opens just because she took a chance.

  • 3 weeks later...

The Mexican chain Cantina Laredo closed at Crocker in the last week or so it appears - after only 18 months. I've been watching the small crowds for some time and assumed this was coming - even thinking it as I pulled into Crocker today. The year old NextDoor Eatery at Pinecrest is probably next to go...just slooow...

I've never believed the "Cleveland doesn't like chains" angle some have played up but in recent years we've lost Fleming's, McCormick and Schmick's, Maggiano's (one of only two to ever close) and others - so something's up.

At the same time other chains thrive (Cheesecake Factory at Legacy is one of the top 20 in the 200 unit chain, etc..., the newish Coooper's Hawk near Pinecrest is always packed, etc..)

^ haha wow that is funny - cheesecake factory is unstoppable!

i dont think those closures are really anything to do with cle. at least broadly speaking, maggianos/chilis/brinker and flemings/outback/bloomin are struggling franchise operations. they are outdated and too expensive for what the are. and of course stagnant old causal is losing out to fresher fast casual dining.

mccormick and schmicks/landrys also seems to be closing up a lot over the last few years, and that kind of bums me out. we lost the one in midtown manhattan, which i liked, particularly for their rather famous and well regarded happy hour specials. i'm a landrys card holder and user, i got nothing against chains lol. btw the landrys card is a great deal, it costs $25, which you get back as soon as you use it, then you get specials notices and $25 every year to use on your birthday, so i'm long in the black with it.

Does anyone know when Alea in Hingetown is set to open???

When I read the Scene article in October, it said it was going to open in the beginning of November, but I can't find any opening dates, nor does there appear to be an active website / contact info.

I may or may not have told my wife I already booked us a reservation for Friday - this loss will sting if they're not open yet lol.

Now Dante's Bocuzzi's previously announced GOMA sushi/Japanese not opening at Pinecrest. Per CLE Scene today maybe other restaurant closings helped the decision? Back on chains:CityWorks, Granite City, Abuelo's all closed in last two months adjacent or nearby..

Wow! CityWorks closed? I was in there twice in the Spring and Summer and the place was packed

Yeah definitely. My wife and I go there about once or twice a month though. I sold her on the whole "somewhere new" thing. I think maybe we'll go with Dante, as we've never actually eaten from the regular menu there! Nice little workaround lol

Irie is open in Old Brooklyn

Hoping it takes up the old Jimmy John’s or J Gumbo’s space on Euclid.  Don’t need dead spots there.

They've had a spot in Collinwood for a while, the west side/Old Brooklyn location opened last week (or maybe the week before?) either way, the facade had been done for maybe a couple months at this point. I assume they had to do a decent amount of work on the inside, but it came out great!

^ah, that could be. just the facade was done. I drove by about a month ago and saw it, then googled it. Didn't realize it wasn't open on the west side yet. Can't wait to go!

I wish we had a Jamaican  place downtown. I’d live there. Hell I’d settle for Indian

or a Thai place.

Is the Indian place on Ontario gone?  It was okay, but it was Indian if you had the need. It was between Public Square and Prospect on the east side of the street.  There was a fancy indian place on Prospect around what would be E. 5, but that place closed a while ago.  And given the huge popularity of Thai food, I'm surprised there isn't one Downtown.  We need Thai, Jamaican, AND Indian Downtown--open for lunch and dinner.

There is Indies in the 5th Street Arcades food court (so good!) and also Bombay Chaat at E 21 and Euclid (also good!).
